So, if I HAD to complain about something inside the school it would be that. They seem to be a little TOO trusting when it comes to who is picking up children. Parking is minimal, the after school pick up is ALWAYS chaotic. Arrive early, secure close parking and you're fine. Drop off is crazy, as well. Mainly because not all the parents follow the rules and think their child is the only one getting dropped off. Mrs. Ortega (the new principal) is stern and fair. I think the communication with parents and faculty could be A LOT better.

When compared to other daycares, this place is not a part of any fancy chain and doesn't have all the bells and whistles of other places, but my daughter was definitely well cared for and loved. One thing to note is that the daycare does adhere to DPS closures and also has more in service and vacation days than most daycares (1 week in the summer, 2 weeks in the winter, scattered in service days), so you may need to plan your vacations off around it.

The First Step teachers develop bonds with the young kids and follow them thru elementary school. This creates a real family feel throughout the building. The staff, teachers, and administrators are great. Everyone knows my kids by name and really cares. The montessori method is also great at fostering creativity. I recommend the school.The test scores are lower due the Montessori method not always meshing with standardized tests and some demographic biases that affect the scoring. My children have grown in this atmosphere and show academic and developmental progress as well. One other thing, the dual language program is a gem. We are an English speaking family. My 5 year old is immersed in Spanish and can understand and is starting to speak a second language in just over a year!

Tried calling the main office, sent emails - no response. Tried visiting the office, it's all "oh okay, yes we will do it." Horrible. If the main office can't communicate or work with you, what more your child and their documents.

Staff turnover is very high. Loved,trusted and experienced teachers don't stay long: lots of rookie…read moreteachers, uncertified teachers and uncertified administration. Curriculum changes yearly. Due to lack of continuity of staff and curriculum, test scores are continuously low. Many layers of administration: everything appears to be micromanaged. Special services for students are difficult to access due to 'data collection' and 'documentation' that takes months. No library for students (it is there, but the space is used as a meeting room, while books sit unused on shelves). Entire school seems disorganized and unsure of what they are trying to accomplish due to too many 'new' programs and procedures that seem to change yearly.
