Monica, who works at the front desk, is very rude and condescending towards parents. I hope McGarvin gets better staff.

Saved me time and $ to help pursue higher (under)graduate studies sooner and more productively. - Never realized how much the workout cage resembled a prison yard. - No pickleball courts. Qué lástima. - The literature teachers weren't good at teaching logical students how to excel in the arts. + The sciences teachers were excellent at teaching us the sciences and maths. Glad they were passionate about their fields too. - Their dance club organization was poorly executed. For every assembly performance, you were required to show up to practice 4am the day of or else you wouldn't be allowed to participate, even if you had been loyally attending all weekly practices prior. Since their 2025 remodeling, nothing's recognizable to us old alumni anymore. Fresh new grounds and buildings. Revitalized look.

Smacked her daughter so loud you could hear it with all the noise inside. I watched as the daughter was about to eat a sample only to be smacked! The daughter just looked straight ahead and took the verbal lashing her mom gave her. A teenage boy soon arrived to say only a few words only to be loudly scolded by the narcissistic mom, boy looked down in silence. I am familiar with those behaviors, looking down as it's a familiar feeling by my own mother. Neither child said a word. Why? Because they are used to being berated and if you even dare attempt to defend yourself, well be ready to be beat or unjustly accused of attitude for speaking up. Dear mom, I can only imagine who you treat your child in private if you so boldly assault your child in public. Seeing your face with that heavy eyeliner and trashy fake lashes brings back unpleasant memories of my own mother. Your behavior represents that high school simply by wearing it. DO BETTER.

It was, to say the least, terrifying to practice our backwards marching on a bumpy grass ground, as opposed to the smooth concrete floors that we should have had made available during this warm up. It's almost as if we were set up to fail, or that they were doing everything they could to encourage us to earn a low score. I truly do understand this effort, as I know that our school does pose as a threat towards others wishing to earn the title of first place. Next, to assess this schools environment, we will look to the overall vibe conveyed. I and other performers agree that a "fall feeling" was in the air. Nice trees, fallen leaves, and a peaceful area around our unloading and bus area. The halls were nice, and, to summarize, you could say we were grateful for the richness of this school, but also for the lack of money to make this one of those huge schools you could get lost in. Congratulations to Bolsa Grande HS for earning these four stars. -Marching Band Pro Performers

05/09/2023 Ah, Taco…read moreTuesday. The pinnacle of every mediocre, sluggish, monotonous second day of the repetitive nature of school. Today in particular I did not have a club meeting for Illumination Foundation, as I usually do every Tuesday. Immediately when the bell rang indicating fourth period ended, I sped-walked to the outdoor lunch lines, hoping to snatch whatever was left of the infamous tacos. Thankfully, nowadays, there are always still a handful left even halfway into lunch. I frantically searched for my ID screenshot in the depths of my photos and thanked the cafeteria worker for the box of tacos as I quickly grabbed an apple juice carton. Finally, I am seated and can enjoy these bad boys. Sometime 10/08/2024 Woah. I never finished this review. I think it tasted good? Idk I lost the photo of this but imagine a black plastic container with two pieces of tortilla holding together ground beef mixed in with the cheapest American Cheddar cheese. Go Barons! PLEASE READ!!! Many…read morepeople refer to this school as the "asian school" due to its high standards and the rigorous competition. Despite this "honor", there is at least one kid everyday sobbing their eyes out over a class rank, and during finals seasons, surges of low self-esteem and severe mental crises. Here, there is no such thing as student well-being- it is there but doesn't serve any realistic benefit for the student body. Out of all schools in the HBHS district, this school definitely ranks last for student morale and mental health. There is no support for low-income students - they pour all of the school budget on the most preposterous things, rather than a successful place for students to learn. The staff are there to monitor activity around the school but to students' eyes, are the biggest interference. The counselors do not work like counselors, at least one of my child's friends was behind on graduation because of the counselor's advice. It is best if you do your own research rather than taking advice from the counselors. My son has gotten food poisoning from the food in the lunch lines and has stated many problems with the lunch lines: poor supervision, crowded, and overall terrible food quality. I've already pulled my son out of this school and toward a private school for a better experience before he graduates. Please reconsider when selecting your next high school- it's the most important last 4 years and it is crucial you select the school that best fits you.

I've always heard great things about PLAVAN and the entire Fountain Valley School District. All of…read morethe positive reviews are absolutely true. Plavan does have some of the finest educators in the country. The teachers here are passionate about what they do and always give it their most. I can certainly tell if teachers are burnt out by just observing them. I do not feel that vibe here at Plavan. The teachers here are smart, attentive, and genuinely care about the students and families that they work with. They are very direct and always open for communication. If you have problems they will try to work with you personally until the issues are resolved. Kudos to the Principal, Dr. Ham. He is truly an exceptional boss. He takes good care of his staff. In return, they take good care of the students. Dr. Ham is always out directing traffic in the morning. He knows the name of every student at Plavan and makes an effort to chat with all the parents. This man is very hands-on and leads by example. Shout out to Ms. Jill Summerhays who is the current district teacher of the year. I mean wow, my middle son got to be in her class for 2 years. He was taught by the best. And it shows with all the progress he has made. She has a very unique teaching style and deep understanding of my son's educational needs. She proactively communicates with us and promptly addresses any concerns that we have. Her aides, Ms. Roberta, Ms. Patsy and Ms. Jennifer are so patient and sweet. My son loves going to school. We really enjoy seeing pictures of him doing fun and creative learning activities throughout the year. From the very first day my son started school here, she was so sweet and made us feel comfortable. We felt the love and knew this was the right place for him to learn and thrive. Also shout out to Ms. Jenn Andrews. My oldest son has her this year and it has been wonderful. She would meet with us throughout the school year to discuss his progress and offer ideas and different ways we can help him improve his skills at home. She is an amazing teacher with a lot of compassion and a big heart. You can tell she really loves teaching Kindergarten and helping her students succeed. Her classroom aide, Mrs. Williams is so sweet and great with the kids. In general, Plavan has really set the bar for how a school should be. The front office staff is warm, welcoming and respectful to all the parents who come in. I feel that we get first-class treatment like at a private school. They also try to get the parents involved with the PTO as much as possible. Great job Plavan!

Just as another reviewer mentioned, last school year we also had a big issue with Mrs. Ballesteros…read morehandling of bullying and had to submit report to the district. She failed to contact us when our son was punched unprovoked on the playground and cried. She also did not contact the punching kid's parents. My son was not checked by a nurse. Both kids were promptly released back to class when the recess aid brought them in. When I found out about it through his little sister I asked the principal about it and she completely lied. She said that the other parents were notified and there has been discipline. Little does she know, I know of the parents. Mrs. Ballesteros said that the kids were daring each other and the nurse checked on my son. None of that happened. I had evidence of texts messages between me and the other parent confirming my son's account of what happened and that the school did not notify them either. Long story short. I presented this to the district and Mrs. Ballesteros had me come in and she totally admitted to lying about everything and that "the situation is just rotten and will never happen again." With a new principal at Plavan this year we feel more confident and optimistic. We see him out there directing traffic and being incredibly involved. Our kids tell us he is out there watching the kids during play everyday. This change is very nice. Also, the new added front office staffs helping Kathy are both wonderful. We are very happy.
