None of my issues were with them, they were great. The interior was a bit dated and there was a slight musty smell when you came in. Not to mention that they share bathrooms with the gas station next door which did NOT smell great at all. They had a very extensive menu...almost too much. I honestly don't remember what my meal was called but it was shaved beef on toast with mashed potatoes and gravy all over everything. The mashed potatoes were definitely dehydrated prior and the best thing about it was the gravy which still wasn't that great. My husband got the cheesesteak and he said it was just ok. Not a horrible experience but not the best. I hope they treat their waitstaff well because that would be the only reason I returned!

She was really nice and sweet. I was delighted to see that they had fried green tomatoes, I guess with homemade ranch dressing. So I ordered that as an appetizer, and I also ordered chicken 'parmesan' as my main dish. She brought me my drink, and took my order. I sat waiting for my appetizer to come out, but all of my food came at once. She apologized that the cooks cooked my order together. Didn't really matter to me, I know they are getting close to closing. The fried green tomatoes were off the hook! Their ranch dressing was pretty good too. The tomatoes were nice and thick, and just perfect overall. My chicken parmesan, was all chicken, no parmesan. Didn't have any cheese whatsoever, but that's not a big deal to me. The chicken was fried perfect. It was so good, and the pasta is just basic spaghetti. I ordered it with extra sauce, but they didn't give me extra sauce but whatever. The inside is pretty spacious, it has nice decorum, and I guess they have buffets on sunday? I don't expect to ever be in that area again. So I guess I'll never know, but I do recommend if you're hungry, it's a great little spot to eat.

Carolyn's Essenhaus is a true gem on the Kansas prairie. Located just southwest of Salina along…read moreState Highway 61, it's well worth a stop at almost any time of day. They're open from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, Thursday, and Friday, and until 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Saturday. They're closed on Sundays. After a long day on the road traveling from Las Cruces, New Mexico, to Salina, Kansas, we arrived around 6:00 p.m. on a Monday evening. We were more than ready for a break. We had found Carolyn's Essenhaus on Yelp, and from the photos and reviews, it looked like just the kind of place we were hoping to find. Inside, the restaurant was much larger than we expected. The dining room was filled with local artwork, charming Kansas memorabilia, comfortable tables and booths, and a classic salad bar prominently displayed in the center. Table service was friendly, warm, and welcoming--like enjoying dinner in your grandmother's kitchen. My wife ordered the chopped steak topped with cheese and grilled onions, served with green beans and sweet potato fries. I chose one of the local favorites, essentially a hearty patty melt featuring a grilled burger, grilled onions, and a thick slice of grilled ham. Both entrées were excellent, but the real star of the meal was the salad bar--especially if you appreciate an old-fashioned, homemade selection. It instantly reminded me of family potlucks with all my aunts and uncles. There was macaroni salad, cottage cheese, potato salad, broccoli raisin salad, a sweet and creamy chopped cucumber salad, and plenty of other homemade favorites. It was so good that I went back for a second small plate and happily told our server to charge me for the extra trip. To finish the meal, we couldn't resist taking two slices of their homemade coconut cream pie to go. It was every bit as delicious as the rest of the meal. Before heading out, we picked up a few of their homemade cookies from the front counter, paid what we thought was a very reasonable bill, and continued our journey with full stomachs and smiles. If your travels ever take you near Arlington, Kansas, do yourself a favor and make time for Carolyn's Essenhaus. It's the kind of place that reminds you why small-town restaurants are often the most memorable stops on any road trip.

She chose Roy's Hickory Smoked BBQ, and wow, are we glad she did! Pulling up, I was a little skeptical at first, but there were a few cars outside so we decided to give it a try. I hadn't paid attention to the hours on Yelp, and when I saw the sign on the door that said "11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. or until sold out," I told my wife, "Hopefully they still have some food left!" As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by that wonderful smoky barbecue aroma. We looked over the menu board and my wife chose the two-meat platter with ribs and brisket. It came with two sides from the cold case, beans, corn, pickles, and a drink. I ordered the brisket and ham sandwich, which also included two sides, beans, corn, homemade pickles, and a drink. The prices were very reasonable. After selecting our sides, we grabbed a small plate of beans, corn, and homemade pickles and found a seat in the second dining room. The restaurant has a large community table in the front room along with additional seating in the other rooms. Before our main dishes even arrived, we were impressed. The beans and corn had excellent flavor, and I was tempted to go back for more. When our meals arrived, they looked absolutely amazing. My wife's ribs were huge, tender, and practically falling off the bone. Her brisket looked moist and perfectly smoked. My brisket and ham sandwich was piled high and looked just as good. I was disappointed they had sold out of the bologna, but after trying the ham, I quickly got over it. The ham was delicious on its own, and adding their barbecue sauce made My wife and I were traveling home from Colorado through Kansas and starting to get hungry. If you think about the size of a regular dessert bar versus this, not only was this about the size of two you might normally get elsewhere, but the quality and the taste let you know this thing was homemade and made with love.
