If I'm in a quick hurry to get a few groceries, I'll come to the commissary. Otherwise, if I have more time I'll go out in town to Safeway, Whole Foods or of the like. The prices are the same at the commissary as out in town, less sales tax. However, the dates nine times out of ten are bad and either outdated or about to be expired. Check everything. The produce and meats selection aren't the greatest either but sometimes you can find a decent selection. The commissary is also under construction and has been for a few months so finding things can be difficult. Been coming here to MCBH Commissary for years ever since my AD days but didn't have Yelp back then. Perhaps it's fitting to say a few words.... This is still an enjoyable place to shop, although it has seen better days. Back 10 years ago, this small but well stocked commissary used the have the freshest and best local and organic produce on island. Not only did they beat out the other 3 major installation commissaries on Oahu but I also found their organic apples and other fresh produce beat Down to Earth's in freshness and quality all at a fraction of the cost. Then in 2012 a certain political ideology cut funding and commissaries worldwide were forced to pass on the added utility and infrastructure costs on to the customers. But this measure wasn't enough so the end result was further decline in quality and freshness as commissary managers were forced to find cheaper provision suppliers. But as the French say, that was then and this is now. This commissary has made some significant come backs since 2015 as the number of organic produce farmers has grown both locally and on the mainland, helping lower the wholesale costs. Still it doesn't rival its past days when you could buy farm fresh organic produce at farmers market prices. I still find terrific prices on organic eggs, produce, canned goods, and some seafood items, like the real deal Kauai shrimp (yes with the heads still on), and of course the standard type commissary specials from overseas (spaetzele, spargel, and rotkohl from Germany; escargot and St Andre' from France; etc.) They have a wonderful staff and it's always pleasant to come shop. One word of caution if you're used to shopping at the more casual Hickam or Pearl Harbor comms... Marines have a strict "Leave and Liberty" dress code so please don't roll in there in your beach or workout clothes. Actually I kinda like how it forces you to "get dressed up to go shopping " as it reminds me of days long past (yeah I heard that...never mind how long past). Definitely recommend stopping by if you're in the area and don't have the time to drive over to Schofield, Pearl, or Hickam. DoD ID card holders still require a vehicle pass obtainable at the visitor center (and good for two years). The produce section is insane! Some foods are already expired. Everytime i buy corn here, i take it home and its no good. The broccoli has mold and aphids on them. Onions are a gamble. Dont even get me started on pre-sliced pineapple! Why does the price tripple if its pre-sliced?! And its not like youre getting the whole pineapple. You maybe get 1/4 of it. They have great variety. The deli personnel are the best. They always get the perfect slice thickness. HOWEVER, the one major is problem I have are the propaganda announcements they play every 10min. It's time for the scare tactics and mass programming to stop. I love this Commissary. There's a ton of parking, there are few lines as long as you plan your trip accordingly, and the prices are actually lower than the commissary in Pearl! I'm here 1-2 times a week, and try to either go before the lunch rush, or in the afternoon before the dinner rush. I love the staff here, who are all super helpful and insightful, like the produce guy who noted to me that bulk spinach is like 3 times cheaper than bagged, or the meat guy who taught me about cuts of beef. There are times when a particular product is on sale and then is sold out, so being prepared to leave with an alternative product or come back is always an option in my head when I'm making my grocery list. Prices are really good, plus there is a check your own groceries kiosk area that I've never had to wait for, and no need to pay someone to bag and bring to your car like other commissaries. This is the perfect place for military families to get subsidised supplies at a much more financially savvy price than shopping at stores in town. read more

If you're reading this, you're probably military affiliated so I don't need to go into all that for you :) From what I understand (not tried yet) you can bring one non military guest to this establishment, unlike its sister on pearl harbor/Hickam. This is Hawaii and the price of something here is NOT the cheap price you remember from you previous duty station. So, account for the Hawaii tax and the fact that it is cheaper than anything else you will find out in town. My issues with the comissary here are with the selection of food. Produce: it seems limited, and doesn't stay fresh too long because of the tropical weather. Organic/Health Foods: You actually will find more of these things out at Down To Earth, Wholefoods and Vitamin Shoppe, the selection is very small and they don't carry the normal brands that other comissaries do The things I LOVE, are the fresh fish section and the reduced meats. The main reason my husband and I shop at the commissary is the pricing. For the most part, you can beat the prices on base. That being said, I have had serious issues with the quality of the food here. I've bought cheese that I realized was moldy when I got home and meats that went bad within a few days. Just be cautious and make sure you inspect the food you're buying. I also cannot understand how they're able to have people working as baggers for only tips. That sounds like a way to have undocumented workers in an establishment. Plus I never carry cash and they give you dirty looks when you don't tip. 99% of the time I go through the self check out for that reason. read more

Prices are going up without explanation and several shelves are bare. Some shelves have 8 different brands of the same product. Very frustrating. Service charge is nothing more than a 7.3% tax. Many Jr enlisted still have problems affording the basics. A serious reevaluation of the system is needed. read more

The Marine Corps base commissary in Kailua, has many selections that are cheaper in prices compared to local stores in the area. Specially in the meat section, home products and dairy sections. This place can be really crowded during paydays. But still have enough parking. You can check out on your own and scan your groceries and pay, or go through the regular "line". The place is always clean and shelves are always kept stocked. The restrooms are clean and even have a baby station where you can change diaper. They also have a designated spot for pregnant women 6 months up. What else can you ask for when you do your shopping here overlooking the pacific ocean in awe. 5 stars read more

Service here has gone down hill really fast. I usually shop at Hickam or Schofield as they're both top notch in both selection and service. My experience today was HORRIBLE! I was unable to find a few items that I needed, so my son and I thought it would be a good idea to get some meats and other stuff to have a BBQ instead of what we had originally planned for dinner. After about a half hour of shopping, we had what we needed and proceeded to the check out line. When I attempted to check out, the cashier was unfamiliar with how to process one of the coupons I needed to use. Rather than hold up the line, I simply told the cashier to remove the item and proceed with the check out. Rather than do as I requested, he decided to ask someone in the office for assistance. The lady came out and was clueless as well. I told her that I'll pick up the item on my next visit. She refused to honor my request and said that she would find a manager. At this point, I was rather disgusted, so I simply left the items at the check out and left the store. I've had issues here in the past with inattentive and incompetent cashiers. (Few times they charged me for "organic" rather than standard produce, other times they'd mess up on the produce codes and charge me for different produce all together.) I'd like to see this place improve by properly training their cashiers. The baggers can use some quality training as well. Few times they would put cleaning products with my milk or put my eggs and other fragile merchandise with canned goods. This commissary sucks. I'll refrain from shopping there for a while. Hopefully they'll improve over the next few months. :-( read more

Excellent place to go shopping if you have G.I I.D They're like Safeway but bigger. Many of the food and grocery items that they supply are already at discounted prices, A lot of the items also come in variety. Which is one thing i remember about this place is the variety and assortment of products they carry. There's all the same sections you would find in a regular grocery store including a poke/seafood section. Parking is very abundant. Just make sure you watch where you park as some stalls are for top ranking officials. The store in general is very well kept and maintained. The line to the checkout counters are funneled so there is no confusion in organization, and people can't just cut in front of you. Whenever there is an available registers, a light comes on and directs you to the next available register. There is also a couple self checkout registers. Also there is a massive wall of items directly to the left that are on super sale. Probably the items that the store is trying to get rid of quickly, so it's at a super discounted sale price. read more

Praise the good Lord. This commissary is super close to my house and isn't over run by people. Most items are WAY cheaper here than at Safeway or Foodland even though you don't always get the selection. Good produce selection even though sometimes the onions look a little old and scary.. but they stock tomatillos! and carne asada! and rosemary bread! They still have kids to cart your groceries out for you, another plus from the Navy commissary where all the baggers are old Filipino folks who want way too much for a tip and have bad attitudes. It isn't my fault you're 70 and carting my groceries out to my car.. The kids are usually friendly and excited over whatever you give 'em. read more

Prices can't be beat on the island! Moderate selection, but not nearly as big as the Pearl Harbor commissary. Best part of this location is that you can bring in guests. You always run the chance that things won't be in stock or that they just don't sell your particular item, but again the prices are worth it. Deli is good too. Produce is hit or miss. Was looking for chicken on a bare wall one day and the stocker showed up and tracked down a particular cut for me which I really appreciated. They have some express lanes/self check out lanes. Recommend those if you don't want help to your car and to have to awkwardly tip the baggers. read more

Located on the beautiful windward side of Oahu... is the commissary on the Marine Corps Base. It's located next to the Exchange . There's ample parking. The commissary itself is comparable to Hickam or Schofield's commissary. Pearl Harbor still is the largest. It has items expected in any grocery store: produce, meats, deli section, bakery section, fish, poultry, snacks, breads, frozen foods, dairy products, bathroom/household items, etc... the list goes on. Prices are CHEAP (compared to Safeway or Foodland for example). Staff is nice. The facility is clean and the surrounding areas are well kept. read more

Its exactly what it is... a commissary. The produce selection is not to bad, god help you if you come after a payday or payday weekend, you will be SOL. But the selection is quite large, and not as busy as other commissaries on island. Over all its a easy going and nice commissary. I love that this commissary is a lot less crowded than the other 2 however it has its own faults. The shelves are frequently empty and I understand there are sometimes issues with supply etc but finding someone to help locate products is almost impossible! Also people I have asked questions to whether it is regarding an item, coupons, etc look at me like I have 6 head and have no idea what I'm talking about. Very frustrsting. read more

So I did something I'm not supposed to ever do. Actually, I did two things I'm not supposed to ever do. I'm not supposed to go to the commissary right after payday and I'm not supposed to go shopping hungry. I took one bag. I needed dog food and canned goods and I was going to get a sandwich from the deli. My husband just went shopping yesterday. Soooo, 4 bags and a $100 later I walked out of the commissary. How did this happen. I kept asking myself as I as looking in my cart. I didn't need the dog treats. I know that. I wasn't even hungry for them. I did need the rest of the items. It doesn't seem possible that we can go shopping two days in a row. I wonder if we have even gotten everything now. The weirdest part is it wasn't crowded. Oh well, if you don't mention that my ID card didn't work and the conveyer belt kept getting mad at me and I put my cc in backwards so it couldn't see the chip. Yeah, everything was fine. I was there with my family over the weekend and a woman stole a case of Hawaiian water from my cart while I was having an allergy sneezing fit. Second favorite commissary. Don't get me wrong, they are a really good commissary. They're all pretty much the same, but this one seems to always run out of ground turkey and chicken breast, pretty much exactly like the one at Hickam. The big one at the NEX is the best, but they're guaranteed to be super packed on every day of the week. Never, ever, ever go on or within +/- 1 day of payday. That goes for all of them. The reason this one is second favorite is because they don't make you show your ID or credentials to get into the store at the front door, and then again at the register during check-out. I am very disappointed in the commissaries leadership. I have written to the director. But he has not seen fit to even acknowledge that I wrote. Why can't we have paper bags?? They have been out since Sept. Must be a very slow boat bringing them. Why can't we have more checkouts open when the queue is back to the milk section? I have staffed large hospitals for years, I knew when the busiest times were, the peak hours and the days that we could expect to have a large influx of patients. it is not rocket science, yet on New Years Eve when the store was to be closed the next day there was ONE checkout open. There are lots of people walking around with badges on but , not one could man a checkout , not the best use of personnel . yes the prices ate good but the service is terrible and don't ask any of us about the deli department, they are just rude and very unhappy employees. read more

Being a part of the military you get the benefits of the exchanges, commissaries and much more especially if you live on base because it's just down the road! I love that the commissary is just a walk down the street but I do prefer the Pearl Harbor commissary. It's understanding that the mcbh commissary is smaller but I wish they had some of the things that the Pearl Harbor commissary has. Ex. Basil, mint and more groceries. I get a little frustrated when I come in for lettuce and all that is left is two leaves of lettuce. read more

This comissary is one of the nicer ones that I have been to. It's small but very clean. They have such a good selection of meats to choose from and their set up is convenient for accommodating a lot of customers. There's a sushi mart in the deli area that serves very good rolls!! They are kind of pricey but the times I've gone, it has been worth it. Customer service is excellent! I always find myself interacting with very friendly people who try to keep conversation at check out. The only down side about this comissary is that produce is hit or miss. And when it's a miss it's pretty bad. Hence the 4 stars. But when it's a hit, it's way out of the park. I like this commissary. It's big and a lot cheaper than going to anywhere off base. However, I find that they don't carry as much stuff as places off base. They have a lot of different items, it just seems like whenever I go to look for a specific item, they never have it. I got very frustrated with their dog food section. When we still fed out dogs kibble we fed them nutro, however it was always a gamble to see if they actually had it in stock. Some days it was he chickens eclipse, per days the lamb. Other days it was only the seniors blend or the puppy's. Other day still there was nothing. But most of e time the checkout process is fast and friendly, even when the line is all the way to the back of the store and to the milk and eggs. read more
