large, imposing, generates electricity, and has a fish ladder! on paper it's a winner, in real life it's also a winner! unless you're a fish in which case it's kind of an obstacle to getting up to the spawning areas.
7300 feet wide and 180 feet tall the dam squeezes several dozen miles of rise into a few hundred feet... on the plus side it produces electricity for the better half of a million households while providing recreational opportunities for the outdoorsey types and employing lots and lots of people.
at 86' x 683' this is the fourth of eight navigation locks and provides seventy five feet of lift for water craft that moved a little more than five million tons of goods up and down the river a few years back, probably a good deal more now. read more
