Miso Glazed Pork Belly: sweet and savory beetroot purée, pickled apples and radish (£14.50).
Ting A.

Never have I been so disillusioned by business postings. Photos of the food had appeared gorgeous online, but what was served was such a stark contrast that I had questioned whether it was even the same dish. I was then optimistic that maybe at least the taste would make up for it, but it was also a disappointment. For a tapas style restaurant, the prices were too expensive considering its quality and so we ate elsewhere afterwards to avoid wasting any more money. ----- Char-Siu Pork Doughnut: pulled braised pork doughnut with black treacle hoisin sauce and Chinese five spices (£13.25). Pulled pork was fine, but all of the sauce was far too heavy. The bread did not have the outer crispiness and inner fluffiness that one would expect from a donut. ----- Miso Glazed Pork Belly: sweet and savory beetroot purée, pickled apples and radish (£14.50). Almost £15 for just five measly slices of pork belly that had no notable aspects to it. I could buy a couple pounds of pork belly with that cost and cook it to be even more tender. ----- Crispy Sesame Squid: homemade sweet chili sauce and slice of chard lime (£9.75). Squid was fried well. Although it was standard, both of us thought this was better than the other two dishes. ----- Jade Sword Tea: clean, rounded, full and grassy with gentle seaweed complexities (£3.50). The tea was rather bland and difficult to spot any seaweed flavor. A pot of tea was enough to share among two people. ----- We had a 7 PM Thursday reservation but finished our plans early and showed up early at their opening time of 5 PM. Inside is dim with bar and booth seating. A 12.5% service charge is added onto the bill. Guest Wi-Fi is available.

I decided that this was a really good find. A nice extensive menu, good wine list, upmarket decor…read moreand a riverside location. Definitely classy. We were four in total, out exploring Colchester having arrived late afternoon without having had lunch; so naturally we wanted to eat early and there were lights on inside. Nothing ventured, we asked if they were open and we were promptly ushered inside with a smile. Boy, this place is big! It must get very busy of a weekend evening, but at this time of day we were the only people there, so naturally our server was extremely attentive and helpful; although he was quite insistent about trying to 'upsell' us on some things, like pushing for bottled water when all we wanted was a jug of tap water. But I guess that's par for the course. The menu is pretty extensive, with plenty of veggie and vegan options - although I felt that our server should have pointed out that they have separate menus for those. I went for a veggie Nasi Goreng with a side dish of sweet and sour aubergines (my least favourite vegetable - what was I thinking?). Portion size was very good and the food was great. I even liked the sweet and sour aubergine side plate! You will either love or hate the decor, with its full-size artificial cherry blossom trees and illuminated fluffy clouds. Bizarrely, it all seemed to work well together, although I was less convinced about the music, which seemed mostly to be some kind of pop/techno fusion thing. Overall, it came to around £30 each between the four of us, which wasn't too bad given that our bottle of wine was only slightly less than that. If you want a classy evening meal, you could do a lot worse.

You know what I mean...could use a bit more attention Ambiance is hectic, cool, casual and not Asian inspired but you are at the Ned! After being seated at the bar by a delightful hostess, it was not long before I was given a menu and asked for an order. "I need a moment, but please, I am so cold, may I have some hot Darjeeling tea and water with lemon?" 5 minutes later, the server asked if I was ready, to which I responded, "No, I need a moment, just the tea please". 10 minutes after this, upon the servers return, I placed my order, and stressed that I would appreciate drinks, (did not even have a place setting). Soon after this, the food arrived, and still no tea or water. I was unhappy and my hands were still frigid. AJ, the manager appeared and said to me: "I thought you wanted the tea later," while hurriedly placing down the tea, water, and a place setting. What possible reason would someone have for saying this after having a customer wait for 20 minutes with no drinks, and long enough to receive their food order? Clearly I was unhappy, and clearly AJ, the manager did not care. I was charged for a bottle of water, which was to be expected, but at that point, I did not have time to drink it. "Whatever, I just want to be done," I thought after enjoying the delightful, fortifying tea. My appetizer was ok, but the service was off-putting and disappointing. My dual purpose was to find a spot for a company outing. And Kaia is OUT!

While we were waiting to "meet the Mayor" we saw three groups try to walk up and be told it would be at least two hours. Even if it's becoming more mainstream, I still love the idea of speakeasies, and the little song and dance to get in to "see" The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town was a fun twist. It's an interesting spot because the primary bar is nothing to look at really, though for us Americans who grew up in the 80's the name ("The Breakfast Club") obviously sucks you in. But to get into Scaredy Cat Town, you definitely should make an online reservation. They're not hard to lock down, but we tried to get something on Thursday for Saturday and they only had bar seats left. Totally fine for just the two of us. When you walk in, you just tell them you're there to see the Mayor and within a few minutes, you are whisked through the door of an oddly placed refrigerator (yes, I've blown the surprise, but the "scaredy" cat is out of the bag by now anyway). The place is pretty much a dive, with an overabundance of random knick-knacks, signs, and what-not. Funky, funny, eclectic - you get it. But don't let that mislead your impression - it's a serious cocktail bar. They've got a wide range of original concoctions to choose from, and both the presentation and tastiness of our selections were excellent. The bartenders are friendly, and the music that night was essentially a playlist of one- and two-hit wonders from the 80's (again, right in our wheelhouse!). Totally fun, and a great way to start off our night! I wholeheartedly recommend that you schedule a meeting with the Mayor soon!
