BUYER / RENTER BEWARE. I highly suggest looking for another unit to buy or rent if you are doing business with the Maz Group, specifically Michael Mansfield. I've rented several apartments in my life, and rarely is the experience of looking for and moving into a new apartment perfect (especially in NYC) but this was the worst experience I've had by far. Michael created several false expectations (lied?) during the rental process. First, he called and told us we got the apartment we put in for. Ten minutes later he called back saying we didn't get it, but there was an apartment in the same building that was becoming available that week. We viewed the apartment which was occupied by tenants at the time. We were concerned about the apartment being ready on move in day, and he told us it would be ready ("pristine" were his exact words) within a few days of the least start date. He told us to bid over asking price for the apartment. We did. Then he said we needed to pay the broker fee if we wanted the apartment. I regrettably made a split decision to pay the broker fee. A full week after the lease start date, the apartment wasn't near move in ready. The paint wasn't finished, there was dirt and grime all over the floors, walls, every surface of the apartment, among several other issues. While it falls on the landlord to have the apartment ready for their tenants, I at least wish Michael was honest during the rental/approval process. Looking back, it appears he said whatever we needed to hear for us to sign the agreement, pay the highest possible monthly rent for the apartment, and pay his commission check. We've been living in the apartment for nearly two months and there is still a significant amount of work to be done- the paint isn't finished, windows are still broken, the bathroom piping is being fixed, there are broken bulb sockets, doors off their hinges, we have been without gas for over a week, the list goes on. I highly recommend finding a broker that is truthful to their clients and represents a landlord that cares about their building and tenants. read more

My broker was Marc Williams, and he is simply the best! I recently moved to New York, and he was enthusiastic and optimistic despite my budget limitations. We looked at a lot of places together; he never made me feel pressured to commit to anything that didn't feel right. He was well-informed and extremely responsive--both very important to a worrier like me. To top it off, Marc is a really nice person and I enjoyed being around him. In the end, I wound up in a lovely apartment in a wonderful location at a great price. There's no denying that looking for an apartment, especially in this city, is awful. My experience with Maz Group was ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE therefore I felt the need to write this review and file a formal complaint. My boyfriend and I started looking for a rental unit over a month before we needed to move into a space- usually plenty of time in NYC. We worked with Sal LoPizzo who listed this particular condo unit for "immediate occupancy". We went to visit the space and liked what we saw except for some water damage in the bathroom due to a leak from the unit above. We were told that the bathroom would only require cosmetic repairs and it could be ready by the date we needed. We decided to sign a lease. Right before signing Sal pushed for a higher fee then previously negotiated because he expressed he was going above and beyond for us as he had to travel to the condo owner's residence an hour away to get all of the paperwork completed and then make sure it got to the condo board as they have up to 1 month to review new tenant packages. Additionally, right before signing he sprung a 2 year lease agreement on us and at the time of signing he had us sign a dual agency (which should be done prior to looking at the unit). None of these items were mentioned at the time we viewed the unit however, we paid the higher fee, agreed to the 2 years, and signed the dual agency (instead of bringing another broker into the mix) in good faith that Sal would take care of everything. However, the complete opposite happened. Our package went to the board and Sal went on vacation for 2 weeks and left us with no points of contact or transparency as to where our package was with the board and if repairs would be completed. As the move in date approached we had zero idea of where we were in the process. We didn't know when we could schedule movers or if we would even be permitted to obtain occupancy on the date we needed which would leave us to figure out other accommodations which would cost us money. Sal's advice throughout was to relax. We blindly scheduled movers and I was the one who continuously followed up with the management company. I was finally able to confirm we had been approved just hours before we had to move. On moving day the contractor was still finishing last minute work in the unit and cleaners were there. They were the ones that handed us the key. We received ONE key...there were no keys for the other lock and no mailbox key. There was no smoke alarm/ c monoxide detector in the unit. The kitchen faucet was leaking and the refrigerator was rapidly getting warmer. I had to take it upon myself to call the locksmith and get the locks changed, extra keys made, install a smoke detector and I had to pay for these things out of pocket and take time away from work. (A 2nd contractor was eventually hired to repair the faucet and change the whole shower body and we had to order a new fridge) As for the bathroom...the original contractor who Sal found to do the work is no longer in business! At the time the contractor expressed that the bathroom was very old and the whole shower body may have to be changed instead of just cosmetic changes. 2 weeks into living there it was apparent we could not live with the fixtures falling off and the plumping in the condition it was in and it needed to fixed. Luckily we had the super communicate this to the owner however, we were the ones inconvenienced. A new contractor had to come in and change the shower body. If Sal had handed us the keys or viewed the apartment he would have seen the issues. Apparently there is a checklist that a broker should run though to make sure the unit is in good & working condition prior to new tenants occupying the space and I certainly do not believe Sal did that. My bf and I had spent much of OUR TIME addressing issues that should have been handled before we occupied the space and b/c of this it took time away from our jobs & added stress to our lives. What was the point of signing a dual agency and paying the broker? Wasn't the unit listed for immediate occupancy? I was very frustrated with the process and with our experience and I was even more upset that I did most of the work while paying someone else. I called Sal to express my feelings and he berated me and was extremely disrespectful for 15 minutes and then HUNG UP ON ME before I could even get a word in. In my opinion this was highly unprofessional and I was shocked that Maz Group's business was handled in this fashion. I reached out to the President, Charles to let him know how one of his employees had handled a situation and he did not seem phased by it whatsoever and stated that the employee had "gone way above and beyond his job/duty". My bf & I have rented many spaces in the past and have NEVER had an experience like this. We hoped the broker would have the moral conviction to do his best work and we signed a dual agency so that he would LEGALLY represent our best interest unfortunately, I do not believe that this was this was the case! read more

Unprofessional, unattentive, and rude. I can only say that "this family run business" should not be in business. All the brokers care about are their fees. My personal experience was awful. I basically had to do all of the work myself. In particular I workrd with Michael Mansfield who did not have my best intetest in mind. He just wanted to rush and close the deal just to get his fee. All along not caring at all about the needs of his client...me and using scare tactics to get me to sign a horrible lease. You would think he was the other sides broker and not my broker. Do yourself a favor and stick with larger more professional firms who actually screen and train th eir sales people. read more

I recently moved to NY and was referred to Charles and Alex Mazalatis by a colleague who used their services to source their apartment. I phoned and e-mailed with Charles and Alex who were both prompt and courteous. After providing them with detailed information on my circumstances and wish list and budget, they were able to manage my expectations and pare it down so the apartment in my mind's eye was more closely aligned with what the market had to offer. Within a few days they prepared a viewing list and an itinerary to see them all on a Saturday. Because the apartments were in various boroughs (Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn) they were kind enough to provide a vehicle to see all the apartments. Alex was my guide and we met on time at the first apartment and continued from there. Alex was knowledgeable, courteous and patient and aside from that, a fun person to talk to about various other subjects. The last apartment we saw was the one that prompted me to potentially put in an application. Alex walked me through the main considerations and along with Charles available by phone, he did a few searches on the property managers for the apartment in question which certainly provided some perspective (apparently the building property managers did not have favorable reviews on Yelp) apartment. The price and location was in my range, and I put in an application. What I appreciated was that Alex and Charles put no pressure on me, but presented the context and considerations in a neutral manner. They were willing to go back to the drawing board to prepare another viewing itinerary of options for another day if needed. In the end I did not get the apartment and wound up finding an apartment by coincidence so I did not use Alex and Charles services after all. He was so easy to work with, he found me the greatest tenants to sublet my apartment and he did all of the paperwork for me. All I had to do was sign on the dotted line. I've never written a yelp review before, but this company left us so disappointed and so blind sighted that I felt I had to warn others. They are not what they seem. You can't trust them! In short: If they approve your application and say you will sign a lease for a place, don't believe them! Continue your search for another place, or better yet, don't work with them at all because they could very well be showing that same place to other applicants without once telling you--- and only letting you know several days later when they've signed a lease (for the place you were told you were getting) with someone else. Maz group lacks the basic respect and courtesy that a real estate company should have when dealing with potential clients and applicants. A policy of honesty and keeping people well informed of where they ACTUALLY stand would serve them much better than the dishonest and shady way they decided to do things. They caught us completely by surprise, telling us on a day we were supposed to sign a lease, after a whole weekend had gone by when we'd been led to believe we were all good to go, that they signed a lease with someone else. Further, they claimed it was due to our move in date when their ad for the apartment and what they'd told us at the showing had been consistent with our move in date. We were not only incredibly shocked, but had also just been robbed of 5 days when we could have been looking for another place, and instead found out so late in the game that we had to rush for a new place and settle on something much worse than what we could have found had they been honest with us about what was happening from the beginning. Just when I was starting to give brokers the benefit of the doubt, this company completely validated the stereotype of NYC realty as a crooked and shady industry. Companies like these are what make apartment searching in NYC such a pain, and cause so many people (like us) so much added stress and misery. I don't recommend working with them, but if you do, don't trust them and just cover your back because they definitely don't have your best interests in mind! read more

Terrible experience and fraud alert! Worked with Kevin Cooper at this brokerage. Kevin lied to my face and has cost me thousands of dollars and some serious stress. I leased an apartment from kevin/Maz group 10 months ago. The apartment was in a condo building, and had "no chance of going up for sale"... Guess what, 3 months after moving in and fully furnishing the apartment they decided they wanted to sell. How convenient, the apartment is now fully staged and much easier to sell. Kevin was the broker in the rental and sale. I I checked in with him weekly during showings so I could prepare to find an apt, never got any information from him or the owner (Hernan Valdez --- another awful person) So here I am recently given 30 days to vacate notice when I just spent thousands to move in and furnish my apt. Granted I should have made sure that the lease was amended to change the 30 day move out clause, but a verbal from the broker was all I needed, I'll never make that mistake again. Don't trust this brokerage or this broker. No wonder everybody doesn't trust resi-brokers. read more
