I have never been to a medical network like the Mayo Clinic. This place is absolutely massive, and I was not disappointed in the care I received here. I first visited to discuss a surgical procedure for my facial nerve. Even with me traveling here from across the country, everything was a well orchestrated symphony. The electronic check in systems gave me exactly what I needed to know, and told me precisely where to go. When I arrived, they even told me where I needed to sit for when I'd be called back. The care team took their time with me and I had all my questions answered and we agreed on next steps. They even got me in, same day, to talk to a physical therapist, since I was from out of town. read more

The good, I have had excellent care at both the La Crosse, previously in Caledonia, Mn. Although, this hospital should really move into the new realities of life in 2026. What I will describe to you is the phone system, the RN or MD calls you, and leaves a VM with the phone number to call back. Alas, you cannot call the number that is provided. I have a heart procedure scheduled, and you would think proper care would involve the hospital providing the patient with an important phone number to call in the VM. Of course, perhaps I am not an international patient who pays cash?? This practice should stop, full stop. I was told by a kind receptionist that the nurse ( who called 4 times within 10 minutes while I was teaching) leaving an accurate phone number to call back, was possibly a HIPA violation. What is going on here? This is ridiculous! Is leaving the correct number a HIPA violation, I think not. If so, how about a modern variation TEXT me the proper information, that is used with many Mayo correspondence. The app doesn't help, when responding to the updated time that was described in the VM. I opened up a case in early December 2025 for my 15 year old daughter to get a second opinion of her wrist, due to a fall. We come from Canada and this would be done through the International Office. We have no insurance. We would have to pay for everything out of pocket. We began the process and were instructed to send the reports and images we had. The first email says, "Please send us any medical records or other relevant information." No mention of cost. The second email says nothing about a cost either. The third email says, "A physician from one of our specialties will review your medical records to determine if Mayo Clinic can provide additional benefit. There is no cost for this record review." In that same email, there is a statement that says, "You may incur charges if radiology and/or pathology slides need to be reviewed by a radiologist and/or pathologist." But, there's no sense of what it could possibly cost. We did send images and we sent the radiologist's reports with each one. So, to determine IF the Mayo Clinic could even consider taking my daughter as a case, shouldn't really have required another radiologist to interpret the images. So, we got an invitation for an appointment. All I had to do was give $10,000 US as a "pre-service deposit" to be able to schedule in-person appointments. No indication is made as to what anything could cost. No estimate of the cost of a doctor visit, an x-ray, a blood test, etc. Essentially, we will charge you what we want and you agree to it all. Well, this is a lot of money and we decided to look elsewhere, primarily because there was no minimum or maximum cost provided. I can't agree to something if I don't have a clue as to what it could possibly cost. After all, I was only looking for an opinion. Today (Jan 14th) I received a bill for $1099 USD for reading the CT and MRI I sent ($1537 CAN). Being Canadian, where we don't pay for anything related to medical/hospital care, this is surprising and simply amazing as I wasn't notified it was going to happen. I was only told it may happen and I may get a bill. No one asked me to proceed/approve at this incredibly high cost. I would have said no if asked. I don't understand why the images i sent would require another radiologist to interpret them when I sent it with the original images. By the way, the reports were interpreted but I wasn't notified until I received the bill today and I did not receive a copy of the written report. We have sought other opinions from around the world, including other US-based hospitals. Everywhere else, they have given a cost for a "second opinion" up front and they stick to it. With the Europeans, we have had online appointments with surgeons and specialists, with no fee assessed (they were provided the same reports and images as we sent Mayo). So, for fellow Canadians and any international patients - proceed with caution. There is no regard for your money. The Mayo Clinic will charge you anything they want without seeking approval first. Follow up: I wrote an email to complain about the charge. 2 weeks later I received a notice that the money was being refunded. No explanation. Of course, I never received the written report of the CT or MRI so I have some doubts it was even done. With the charge to my credit card and the refund to the same card, I lost $80 in the exchange rates. Oh well. A lesson learned to not trust the US medical system as money is king. read more

It does not matter what level of staff you talk to, each one is kind, patient, and genuinely cares about you and your health! This was a total shock to my dad and I, coming from small town central Illinois. Walking from the "subway" and entering the atrium area of the Mayo Clinic was a bit overwhelming at first. There was so much hustle and bustle of staff and patients walking everywhere. There was someone on a piano, playing covers of modern songs from Ed Sheeran. This place is a city within a hospital. The Pentagon of hospitals, we managed to navigate our way to the different stations of appointments we had for the week. Thankfully everything is marked well and there are friendly staff everywhere to help you in case you get lost. All of the staff were very kind and professional. I was impressed at the level of experience of the doctors here. These are the specialists we flew 3000 miles to come and see, and this trip was definitely worth it. After arriving, thankfully I found a staff member who was highly generous of helping to get where I need to go, however, after my appointment was awful..... After my appointment multiple individuals from the Information Desk on Lobby Level, and the 10th floor of Mayo building had me going all over the place after my appointment to go and validate my ticket and I spent about an hour on a wild goose chase (costing more time in parking etc) I finally found the correct area of where I needed to be, and they would not validate my ticket like I was told on the phone before hand by an operator that I don't have to pay for parking, and charged me more than it should've been. If your staff don't know the answer, don't lie and send patients on wild goose chases and sit there and huff and puff because you don't wanna do anything for your shift. Instead, be polite and apologize and tell me you'll call someone to find out for me instead of sending me back and forth to multiple departments. read more

Mayo Rochester is a very large campus right downtown Rochester. The resources available provide the doctors remarkable opportunities for diagnosis and healing. However the doctors are people, not gods providing mericels. The logistics is very patient unfriendly. To start with the campus is under construction everywhere. Always check for parking updates before arriving. Once you fight through the construction you will find parking less than ample and handicapped is very limited. Once I park I make my way from west parking to Hilton building for blood work at 730am. This first leg of my morning journey is a 20 minute walk to blood draw and 10 minutes back to the Gonda building to sit and wait until 10am to provide a urine sample. After urine at 10am I get to sit and wait until 11am at which time I can check in for a 1pm chemo treatment. Usually after waiting from 11 to 1 for my chemo, they are fashionable late byv15 to 20 minutes. After my chemo I walk 10 minutes back to west parking and drive 5 hours home. My first round of chemo was park and walk 2 minutes to check in at 0730. Blood is drawn by 0740 and infusion us started by 0800. No later than 0815. Very painless and uneventful. Why mayo doesn't do better is beyond be. I have refused any additional chemo after my initial 6 weekly treatments due to the challenges provided by the logistics. It would be nice to allow the patient to provide all samples at once so they can be free to go back to the hotel and rest. A chemo patient should not be running cross country track meets to receive treatments. And there isn't anything for a patient to do while waiting which makes it worse. read more

Customer Service? Non-existent. Part of Mayo Clinic's corporate culture's philosophy of "We don't care: we don't have to." Mayo Clinic is only interested about in limiting their liability, not correcting problems. I've been double-billed by their wonderful AI billing system... and no amount of charts, screenshots, or explanations help. Their promises to look into a matter result in the same response: silence, doing nothing. Of course, they CAN'T consider that they might have a problem, that someone made a mistake in their accounting system. It's very clear to everyone outside of Mayo that there's a problem, but their solution is "pay the bill, THEN we'll discuss the problem." Same result as sending them an email, text message, or letter complete with charts, screenshots, etc. Absolutely nothing is done... except to re-bill the same error. They have silence on their side. If I don't pay the bill, their legal machinery is set up to extract the last drop of blood from their customers. And, as long as their customer service people have their "head up and locked" attitude, silence is their preferred method of dealing with problems. Talk with their customer service people and you soon realize that they're pausing only to tell you/repeat their side of the story, not to try to understand what a customer or client is trying to convey, supported by screenshots, photos, charts, explanations. Someone should tell them that this is the way customer-patients die. Their customer service people should be told that just because they use machines, they shouldn't think like one: apparently, they've never heard of bad programming, or "garbage in, garbage out." read more

I was Seen today on the 15th floor in gonda south by Dr. Whree. Might not be the correct spelling. One of his team member came in and explained all the different procedures I could have done and suggested one to be the less invasive one. Then Dr wree came in examined my hand and wrist and went over the imaging of the badly broken wrist I had 3 years ago. You can see in my MRi I have pretty bad arthritis in one spot 2 old torn tendons and multiple other spots of arthritis. My wrist clicks and im in pain everyday. He compared me to other older patients and then told me my mom why was sitting right next to me that she's old and probably has worse arthritis then me. I was even compared to a man he saw who had his finger cut off in a horrific accident. He said if I don't believe I'm not going to get better i won't. Other people think that way and they get better. He even compared me to his sister who feels guilty for not being close to their parents because him and his wife have to take care of them. He told me im to over activate for my paim when he was pressing on spots in my wrist. That no one else reacts like that. This was honestly just an appointment to inquire about the torn tendons because my surgeon wanted to make sure they didn't need to be fixed and it wouldn't creat other issues when he took the bone out that's completely full of arthritis and bone spurs. My and my mother felt completely insulted the entire time. He also blamed me as to why he was back up because he had to spend so much time with me. Even though i didn't get taken back on time. Its was almost 40 minutes late. I wasn't even asking for pain meds. For someone who knows absolutely nothing about me sure did have a few opinions on me and the kind of person i am! I had to have surgery to reverse my stoma and repair a very large hernia. Dr.Cima was my surgeon and he was amazing!! He put my fears to rest with his knowledge and expertise. Neurology was excellent. The ED treated me well. Tests were ordered. Found out more in about 8 days than KUMC in Kansas City did in 18 months. I was far from impressed wi5h my hospital admission. The tests done were from GI, not the hospitalist. I am only able to take in most about 550 cal per day. The Nutritionist wrote her report without talking to me. She talked to the nursing staff who didn't know my complete GI history. An upper GI was done. The Radiologist and Hospitalist saw no issues with the UGI. They said food would go down fine. It entering down "fine " in the exam because it was thin liquid contrast material. I get full very early with real food, not liquid barium. The barium basically went thru pretty quickly. When I take in food I get full very quickly. There is a big difference between liquid barium and real food. While at Mayo I was experiencing full body parasthesia. Pretty much freaked me out. The neurologist in the ED did a great job. She did a very good assessment.. She said the brain/gut axis was broken. That's why my stomach will not expand and thats why I decided to stay in Rochester, MN read more

Everyone.....everyone is so helpful, all explain any questions we may have, everyone is courteous, happy and knowledgeable! Diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, gave me a handbook about breathing, meditation and sent me on my way. In 2 years and 4 specialists not one has even given me an exam! Learned from a Doctor there allowed 6 minutes per patient.. I have had 3 doctors leave to other hospitals because Mayo is horrible to work for. The waiting rooms are all spacious and have nice seating with computers and plug-ins for charging. Bathrooms are everywhere. Very clean. I have some incredibly rare pathogenic variants, including ones that put me at very high risk for cancer, and Mayo "doesn't have time" for me. All I asked for was diagnosis, I didn't even request treatment. I wasn't asking them to take a high-risk gamble. I wasn't looking for a transplant, a trial, or even experimental treatment. I was just asking for clarity -- for someone to look at the data, the symptoms, the patterns, and say, "Here's what's going on." That should have been a low-bar request for a place that calls itself a global leader in diagnostics. Diagnosis is supposed to be their bread and butter. But even that apparently isn't "safe enough" for them, because if they can't solve it easily, it might tarnish their image of being able to solve everything. What they're really saying is: We only want you if we can make you better in a way that looks impressive on paper. I'm absolutely done with Mayo and will never speak a good word about them again. Travelled to Rochester to get to the bottom of a "chest mass" found on a recent MRI. After arranging for the 2 week stay at Mayo I went in for the initial appointment and saw Oliver Tobin. During the initial appointment he asked what brought me in, and I told him about the chest mass. He immediately told me "it's nothing, similar to a vericose vein". This was a shocking relief for me and I was ecstatic that I wouldn't need surgery. After being told that I didn't have a tumor, all other appointments were cancelled, I had an appointment with a thoracic surgeon and an MRI for the next day that were cancelled. After the two weeks of bumming around Rochester with nothing to do, I went to the follow up appointment the day before I was to fly back to Anchorage. At this appointment I asked Oliver what I should say to my neurologist at home that misdiagnosed this chest mass, at this point he looked at the MRI for the first time and discovered that I did have a mass that was clearly visible on MRI and written about in the accompanying report. I went home the next day after wasting thousands of dollars on flights, rental car, and hotel. The fact that Oliver Tobin didn't even glance at any medical records I brought him seemed grossly negligent to me. I called Mayo clinic patient relations trying to get some reimbursement for the expenses for this utterly useless and frustrating trip and was denied anything because Oliver lied to them about the reason for my appointment in the first place. I wouldn't recommend the mayo clinic for anything at this point. Also, Oliver Tobin should not be trusted to see ANY patients period! With the kind of negligent, and utterly lazy performance he should be stripped of his license. read more

Horrible . Son very sick with Lyme and babesia . was told we couldnt even get a appointment because hed "already been treated for it" . Anyone with any basic medical knowledge knows Lyme and babesia are notoriously hard to treat and dont respond to meds in most people. Had great care here for about 20 years then went back for my follow up and to discuss some new problems. My original excellent doctor had retired. New doctor, Dr Abdul, mocked me for complaining of pain that kept me up at night. Ordered a slew of tests, MRI, CT, etc. then ignored the results, which showed a fused SI joint. Dr Abdul asked a Mayo anesthesiologist to complete an SI joint injection. The anesthesiologist called the doc stating it was fused so that was impossible. Dr. Abdul still insisted anesthesiologist try it. Anesthesiologist was unable to inject the joint as she had told both of us earlier. The injection did not fix my problem. Dr. Abdul referred me to another Mayo Clinic doc who specializes in surgically fusing SI joints even though mine was already fused, and released me as a patient. I complained to Mayo two years later so another patient would not get discounted and mocked to by this doctor without even giving proper evaluation and care. Dr Abdul had his resident call and ask for an update on how the steroid injection worked two years ago! Laughable the amount of disdain he has for patients and their care! For a place that is supposed to specialize in complex unusual cases he was sure in a hurry to offload a patient who could not be immediately helped with a standard hip replacement at any major city hospital. Just wanted all the tests then ignored the results and suggested a useless procedure that his own fellow Mayo doctor told him would not work or be possible. Only to drop me as soon as I reported the result of the test. Then when I complained about the care or lack thereof, he threw his resident under the bus by having him call me for an update. The resident had not reviewed any part of my file, tests, treatments, or case history. When I asked why he was calling and informed the resident I had not been a Mayo patient for two years; he said well Dr Abdul got an email from someone asking about follow up on this case so he asked me to call and follow up with you. This further cemented my idea of this as no longer a place for complex care requiring cross functional teams and moving it firmly into the run up the bill and dismiss the patient as soon as they don't need expensive surgery immediately. Save your money and time and either go to the Cleveland clinic or any major city hospital, you'll get the same or better care there and if you get assigned Dr Abdul if you go to Mayo run, don't walk away, your wallet and medical care will be better off without him! read more

I only have good things to say about Mayo. A family member was diagnosed by their local doctor with a condition that required surgery to correct. Several local doctors preform this surgery occasionally buy not routinely so we contacted Mayo where they have a specialist who focuses on this procedure and does over 300 a year. We transmitted the records and tests electronically, had phone consultations, scheduled a week long visit. All of the staff was professional, engaging, and seemed to honestly care about their job and the patients. I would hope the that Mayo Clinic would be at the forefront of new knowledge. however, they wrote this year about "Shaken Baby Syndrome" which is a now defunct term that has been proven to be based in junk science. I would suggest the Mayo Clinic get schooled regarding new court cases, overturned convictions and the statements made by the author of the original study about shaken baby syndrome. Even he does not believe in it. If you don't have neck trauma, then you don't have shaken baby syndrome. I have an atypical heart condition and so made an appointment with the Chief of Preventive Cardiology at the Mayo Clinic. They are supposed to be number 1 in cardiology in the US. I flew over 1,000 miles from my home in NJ to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. I spent a whole day getting tests and the next day was to be my appointment with the specialist. Two hours before the appointment they pulled a bait and switch and suddenly my appointment was with a much lower level, younger, less experienced doctor. She was not able to answer my questions satisfactory. What a colossal waste of time and money, not to mention the stress Overall i spent $1200. I would not recommend the Mayo Clinic as they treated me in a very unprofessional manner. I got absolutely no new information from my visit. Addendum: Due to this bad review, I've been harassed by Mayo and now I'm getting threatening voice mails saying, "dude I'm gonna get you." I'm an elderly gentleman and this is very frightening. read more

Mayo Clinic is the most overrated clinic on the planet. Come here for cardiac or cancer issues, yeah they'll help you there. But anything else, they are condescending, arrogant, puffed-up assholes that belittle you and charge you a fortune yet leave you worse off than when you came to them desperate for help. They refuse to give tests, ignore abnormal results when you are tested, deny referrals to specialists, put you off, and act like you are wasting their time. If you have autoimmune issues that destroy your life, go somewhere else!!! They will NOT help you!!! Being the supposed "best hospital in the world", they are unable to act outside of their arrogance. The absolute worst service we have ever received anywhere! Zero stars would be about right. Terrible! I went to the psychiatry and psychology department and the workers are overworked and stressed! It takes a long time to get through to them and when you do, it's like talking to a robot. Completely soul-less. When you meet a provider and they go over their next opening, it doesn't get scheduled. I've had them call me to schedule and appointment that SHOULD have been scheduled already. read more
