Giving The Shangri-La/Profile 4 stars was a bit of a risk, I don't want to mislead anyone that what…read moreyou are getting is a gastronomic treat but it is an experience because what you do get here is a two-for-one event. You see the food here is your pretty standard Chinese fare - I don't know anywhere that can do Chinese food badly come to think of it - but it's not really the food you come for but the Kareoke lounge downstairs. Yes it is gauranteed to be full of drunken Scousers belting out 80s pop songs in a God-awful manner but it is funny especially if one of the staff gets up to do a Chinese number and the Scousers try and join in!

Local Liverpudlians intoxicated and singing in Cantonese, what can possibly be more entertaining. The interior is very unique indeed. Feels much like Crouching Tiger hidden dragon, an oriental wonderland. It is very spacious and went through a major refurbishment at some stage in the near past. On a different note, I am pleased to report though that the service is excellent and the food is not bad either. The menu features well prepared dishes come to you from all the major Chinese regions, ones deserving special mentions include Cantonese and Szechuan delicacies. You can either choose from the a la carte menu or gorge yourself on the rather large banquet. It really is a case of escapism with this restaurant because as soon as you step out into the real world you will feel slightly underwhelmed.

Out of all the Chinese buffet style restaurants in Liverpool, Tso's is probably one of my…read morefavourites because they have such a wide amount of offerings during the lunch time buffet menu for just £5.95 per head between 11.30am-4pm. If you're not too bothered about the food and just wish to 'eat as much as you want' until you're full, then Tso's is a great place to come whether you're alone or with friends and family. The food is actually quite decent for a buffet. Afterall, Tso's is the original oriental buffet in town with over 10 years experience and remains a popular dining experience. At peak times, it does get crowded with a mad rush, so I wouldn't suggest going in a hurry during these times. Apart from that, you can't really go wrong with the service, environment (which is pleasant) and prices which are affordable.

It's not the largest, tastiest, or most well presented, but it does what it does well. And that is this: getting your stomachs achingly full of greasy Anglo-Chinese staples (i.e. noodles, cripsy duck, ice cream with canned fruit at the end). Of course the food is not nearly as good as it would be at a sit down restaurant or even at a take away, but it's cheap, there's a lot of it, and sometimes that's exactly what you want. It can get crowded quickly and chairs bumping into each other is common. Also, watch the clocks, because you can be sure the waiters are. You go just a little bit over from lunch time to dinner, BAM, you're slapped with the dinner price. Don't bother with the drinks. Water is free and if you still have a thirst for something more once you're done stuffing your face, go downstairs to Doctor Duncan's for some of the finest brews the city can offer.

The staff are amazing 10/10 for attentiveness and effort. The menu has much choice and very tasty indeed some may say addictive! (making me hungry writing this). As for the price well it's great also you can get a meal and a side for £5 great on a student budget. Favourites are beef and black bean and chicken satay. I like that the staff remember who you are and chat to you and make an effort when you go in very quick and friendly service and tasty food what more could you want?

Their "spicy" dishes could use a little more excitement, and, for all the apparent variety on the menu, the different noodle dishes I've tried have all tasted more or less the same, albeit with different meat and/or vegetable combinations - as one might expect. The king prawn tempura was greasy and underwhelming; the wonton soup is above average; the hot and sour soup, with its gelatinous texture and distinctly ketchup-like flavor, is best avoided. Beverage-wise, I believe they offer bottled beer, and they brought me coconut milk when I asked (not on the menu). I would be ambivalent about recommending this place were it not for the price. At £5-6 for a sit-down meal, friendly service and good-sized portions, one could do far worse. One potential downside is that this superb value seems to make Mei Zhen popular with the binge-drinking crowd, so those looking for a quiet dinner on a Friday or Saturday night may want to try elsewhere. You can't go wrong for a quick, budget-friendly lunch, however. Recommended.

I have rarely, if ever, enjoyed such great value for money. There was more food than we could eat, and it was cooked and presented to an extremely high standard. Whilst we waited for our soup, prawn crackers and a dip were brought to the table. After the soup, a wide selection of starter dishes was served, all mouth-watering in appearance and totally delicious. This was followed by four main course dishes to which we all helped ourselves. Again, these were truly excellent. Desserts were less exciting, but in truth we had little room left. All four of us ordered small ice creams, and we were asked what coffees we would like, from a rather limited selection. Sadly, the coffees were served at the same time as the desserts, and this detracted slightly from the enjoyment of the meal. The espressos were like treacle - poor; two of us had "floater" coffees (a name surely badly chosen!) and these were very good. One other criticism is that we felt that the meal was served too fast, but we acknowledge that we are more used to eating out in France, where the customer prefers to be far less rushed, perhaps because of the two-hour lunch break and the time regularly taken over evening meals by families. But we felt rather too hurried, and wished for more time between courses just to chat and let our groaning stomachs recover somewhat before the next assault. Had the timing and coffee/dessert issues been more to our taste, I would have awarded five stars. I can't wait to go back, but next time will ask the staff to slow down the delivery of the meal.
