Imagine a bed of thick purple as far as the eye can see, rows of purple lavender glistening against the sunlight. For a second you can almost believe you are standing in the majestic lavender fields in Provence but actually, this charming haven is just on the outskirts Croydon, South London. The Mayfield Lavender farm is a 25 acre family run business which for the past 10 years has become quite the attraction in the little town of Banstead; during the summer months people of all ages flock in their masses to have their photos taken in the sea of purple, it is also becoming extremely popular with tourists visiting the capital.
Entry is just £1 per person for an unlimited time including car parking, the fields also have a seating area as well as cafe and gift store. We visited on a Sunday afternoon and it was extremely busy; however the sheer size of the farm means there will always be space to photograph, but it did mean we skipped the shop due to the queues. The farm really is a sight to be seen and the lavender is alive with pollinating honey bees and elegant butterflies, making it a fascinating place for wildlife geeks like myself!
The Mayfield lavender farm is open from June 1st to September 14th but the best time to visit is in July and August when the Lavender is in full bloom. The farm is open seven days a week from 9am with the last entry being 6pm with the exit at 7pm. read more
