The Nail Social - Gel nails done by Joey. Please note that manicure does not come with ice cream cone

The Nail Social

(43 reviews)

Unionville

The Nail Social can be found inside a strip mall, between A Corner Cafe (which surprisingly is not…read moreon a corner, lol) and Yin Ji Chang Fen with plenty of parking available. Since my family and I were staying in Markham during our last vacation, I wanted to find a nail salon in the city, which ended up leading me here (which I found on Yelp). There wasn't any information about price though on this Yelp page but am happy to add these photos of the pricing that I took when I arrived. I initially had made an appointment for Tuesday, around 2 pm the day before. However, my lunch with one of my aunts and uncles went longer than expected and so I had to call to cancel and ask if I could change the time to a later time. The girl on the phone was so kind and told me because I wasn't exactly sure what time I would be available to have my nails done, she suggested to call before coming in just so I would not have to wait if I was to do a walk in. So later that day, I called prior and the girl told me to come in, so I walked in around 4:55 pm and waited a little over 10 minutes before being asked to take a seat by an employee named Joey. I wanted to get gel nails, which is different from shellac nails for those that may confuse the two (especially since sometimes nail salons will use both words interchangeably but they are not the same). Shellac nails are kind of like a semi- permanent polish, which doesn't last as long (and also is cheaper than gel nails). But gel nails are a semi- permanent gel nail, which does last a few weeks longer. Gel nails cost $75 for a new set. I also wanted a design (I almost always get a design with my nails, which does cost extra but I don't mind), which I had a photo on my phone to show Joey. I told her what design I wanted for my ring finger and middle finger and the same on the other hand (so total of 4 nails that would have design). Joey told me that cost would be $75, in which she didn't charge me extra for design (so I made sure to tip her higher because of it). I liked that Joey took a photo of the design I had in mind with her camera phone so that she could refer to it on her own phone while she was painting my nails. Joey definitely is very talented and I just loved the design she had, as I picked an ice cream cone with sprinkles. She also helped me to find the right colors that I wanted (I wasn't looking for the exact shade and am pretty flexible). I really loved the way the design and the pink color I picked for the rest of my nails, as it really went with the ice cream theme. Although Joey told me that my nails would last 4 weeks, my nails lasted beyond that (and never chipped or lifted. Being in health care, I don't baby my hands and I also wash them constantly, honestly these were probably the best nails I have ever had done). The only reason I took them off was because it really need a fill since my nails had grown over. Joey told me that she had not done an ice cream cone before and she was also happy with her results too. Now this is my first time getting my nails done in Canada and am not sure if it is not customary to get a hand massage and lotion on your hands after a manicure or not. I didn't get one after this manicure but have always had it done with the nail salons in California and also in Hawaii where I have gotten my nails done. Not a big deal, but I wished I had brought my own lotion to put on since my hands were dry. But overall, I am very happy with my experience and would come back the next time I visit Markham in the future. Please note that they do accept credit card but there is a credit card fee. I ended up paying cash.

The salon is a cute, simple, always extremely clean and free from the scent of chemicals. There's always a nice aroma and they bonus is they serve you tea that they brew themselves. In terms of service, I have a nail condition, Michelle always pay special attention and makes sure that it looks perfect and that the whole process is comfortable. Whenever got my nails done before I found Mu Nails, I do not get it removed because the ladies will thin out my entire nail bed, which prolongs the recovery process. Michelle, on the other hand, uses the tool to gently remove only the parts with gel overlay. This is something I greatly appreciate as my nails grow super slow and I'm a very hands on and athletic person and it's extremely inconvenient when you're stuck with weak and thin nails for 5 to 6 months. I highly recommend Michelle. If you wish to schedule an appointment, always text her in advance. Friends whom I referred loves Michelle too!

Nails that are on fleek, of course. I'm kidding, I swear I'm not that basic. I don't even own Uggs. And I've only gotten my nails done 3x in my lifetime. 2 of those times were at Nailed It Studios though so I feel it's time to leave them a review. Nailed It Studios is a tiny, appointment-only, cash-only, 3-woman shop, though I think they're hiring more nail techs to keep up with their insane demand. They're located in the weirdly isolated Langham Square mall on Kennedy but are thriving thanks to their impressive Instagram feed and what I'm guessing is a lot of referrals. When your nails last more than a month without chipping/lifting, you're bound to get questions on where you got them done. I got my nails done by Maggie, then Margie. Maggie is extremely sweet but was a little rough when filing one of my fingers. It didn't hurt per say, but it wasn't comfortable, and I left with a bit of swelling that lasted for 2 days. Same thing happened to my friend. That was literally the only flaw though, as my nails survived for the 6 weeks afterwards, with no lifting or dulling. My second time with Margie was even better. I'm a bad customer because I fidget and tend to stiffen up my hands a lot, due to them being perched in permanent typing position. She was patient with me and the nails turned out perfectly, no discomfort at all. That's why she's the boss. Her marble designs are legendary. Bookings are done conveniently on Whatsapp and first timers need to drop a $20 deposit, in person or through e-transfer. I love this. It ensures I have a transcript of my bookings and I get to ask questions and get quotes on designs I find on Pinterest. They take bookings one month in advance. Margie runs the Whatsapp and she's very responsive. Pricing is extremely fair. They only use gel and it starts at $30. $2/nail for matte, $5 for special polishes, and $6-$12+ for intricate designs. $10 to remove polish. Prices are transparent, reasonable, and you pay for quality stuff. They also give a stamp card which gives you 20% off after your 10th visit. As a woman who appreciates nice nails, grande lattes, and a good pun, Nailed It is the perfect place for me to pumpkin spice up my life and my Instagram feed. Next time you need a picture of a perfectly manicured hand curled around a Starbucks cup, you'll know who to Whatsapp. #NailedIt #Blessed (93/100) - 2017

Her care in the details and also the conversation was fantastic and really helped the 2-hour appointment for my bridal set go by in a flash. As a person who normally doesn't wear extensions, her work stood out even more during the wedding with everybody asking to see the nails and appreciating how they looked with my wedding rings. Definitely going back to her again for the next set.

Their refills are $30 from the last time I went (August 2020) and new sets are $40. Both are for two colors. Their nails last a very long time. My go to nail techs are Emily and Lucky. Emily is very skilled in shaping the nails and making it last a long time. Lucky is good at making nails look delicate and dainty. Both ladies are very talented. I heard that the guy who works at tang tang is also very good. My friends request for him when Lucky and Emily are busy or off that day. The people who work there are very nice and help each other out, which is really sweet. The people there take their time to do a good job, even though it's extremely busy at times. I suggest to call in to book an appointment instead of walking in. This salon is a good location to go to if you're looking for the Korean jewelled nail trends. But they can pull off basically anything you show them. Tang tang also has a loyalty card. When you reach a certain amount, you are eligible for a free jewel on your next walk in. Which is really nice since the jewels start at $5+ each. Another thing to keep in mind is that they ONLY do gel nails. They do acrylic removals for $10. From my experience going to tang tang's, I think their goal for long term clients is to maintain good and healthy growth in their clients nails (like all genuinely good nail salons). There have been a few times where my nails have cracked or broke from my own faults, but the ladies there suggested to only fix the broken nails rather than scamming you for a brand new set. If you have any concerns on damage to the nails or things you are unsure of, don't be afraid to voice out your worries. The ladies there fully explain to you the process and give them their opinions (if you ask) on the best nail maintenance and which options are the best wait to prevent breakage. I really hope that things start opening up soon so I can go back. I highly recommend this place to ladies who like getting their nails done. Or looking to commit to a specific salon. The staff have a really good eye and they really don't try to scam you like other nail salons do.

They placed us in the same room so that we could chat during the massages if we would like. They ask that you strip down to your underwear and knock to make sure you're ready and under the blanket before they come in. There was a good variety of massage lengths you could choose from. We did a 45 minute massage this time, but I'd like to do a longer massage whenever we return as it didn't feel like there was enough time/focus on certain parts of the body. The feet was just a quick two pounds of their fist, which didn't really do much for us. I had CeCe and my mother-in-law had KiKi. Overall, the massage was nice. They used oil and a combination of their hands and elbows. The pressure started off too light for me, so I asked her to go harder. She noted she was afraid to go too hard, so I told her not to be. This was the first time I've been to a spa so I wasn't sure what to expect. We arrived 15 mins early to our appointment - we did not have to wait long to get our room. We changed out of our clothes and got underneath the towel till our masseuses knocked and came in to start the massage. There was a language barrier as the masseuses spoke Mandarin and just a bit of English. We had to signal to apply less pressure as they were both applying a lot of pressure in the beginning of the massage. They also asked if we wanted oil for the massage. We had booked a one hour massage and I believe they ended right on time. For an hour I just focused on the music in the background and the gentle massage on my back, neck, legs, arms, and head. The spa was clean and a peaceful environment. Massages were reasonably priced and I was told the tip was split 50/50 between the masseuses. Note these are not RMTs though so they can't be claimed if you're looking to use insurance benefits from work. The spa is centred for massages only, so there are no additional amenities if you are looking for a place to lounge and relax around afterwards. We got our massage and promptly left after paying. I did feel more relaxed after the massage. It's a bit further out from where I am so not sure if I would go out of my way to visit. Would recommend if you're nearby!
