Ah, Maxie's Daughter. What a fun jumble of a place. This is another of the venerable fabric merchants on Philadelphia's storied Fabric Row, although originally they were over on 9th, part of that lovable jumble called the Italian Market, known then as Max Wilk Fabrics. Max Wilk was where my grandmother got the fabric used to make my christening gown. In the early 90s they moved over to 4th Street and renamed themselves "Maxie's Daughter" as the 4th generation - indeed, Max's daughter and family - took over. Maxie's, like many fabric merchants on the row, has tons of end-run bolts as well as stock fabric. The right half of the store is dedicated to upholstery and drapery fabric, while the left side is clothing everything from linen to lace to silk. It's a jumble, but not as cramped feeling as some others, just as long as you don't mind scooting sideways down the aisles. The ladies clearly run the show here, and boy to they know their stuff. They also are not afraid to cut deals even on end-run bolts. "I'll give it to you for $10 a yard if you take the whole bolt". Really? This is $75 a yard stuff. You got it! They are fun and knowledgable and kind in the gruff way of South Philly. No, they're not polished or sophisticated. You want that? There are places for you. This is not one of them. It's for the fabric lover who doesn't mind the jumble and the phones and the little dogs and the calls of "Irving! Where are the scissors?!" "Irving! Can you get that bolt from the basement?" "Irving, come help lift this!". Irving, by the way, gets a gold star for life being the sole gentleman amongst these very bossy ladies. :) read more

So there are a million fabric shops on 4th Street. There are also a plethora of chinese food joints and cleaners but I think by now you have you're favorite. Maxie's Daughter had a lot of great samples in an organized, clean and not-so-creepy environment, which is hard to find in the fabric stores on first. I was looking for modern designs and only found a couple. Everything is on huge reams and they have helpers to come and measure and cut for you. Good luck finding that elsewhere. read more

I went here today after looking at the other fabric stores. Mikyle was such a biiiig help. They didn't have what I needed but he helped me find something close. He was very engaging and helpful!!! He gave me a low level fabric tutorial. I understood. Lol. He also gave great suggestions for the use of the fabric. Definitely will make this my first stop instead of my last. read more

Beware! The owner named Erick got my order and was paid for that two month ago. Now he is hiding from me. Please avoid this shop. Well finally it was done, after many phone calls, weekly visits to the shop, and bad reviews.That was Frustrating, Time consuming, Exhausting, Nerve wracking experience. If I could give it negative stars, I would. You cannot give this business anything to work on. On December 10th, I brought in 10 drape panels to be pleated. Its April 7th, and just today I picked them up - but I have just 5 of them, though I was told when I picked them up that there were 8. AND that is after returning all of them once to be redone because the job was so bad, and also not done as we agreed. I regret paying them cash for part of the job, because they deserve nothing. While I was in there one time I heard another customer yelling at them for waiting 4 months for pillows. I'm not kidding when I say do not trust them with any projects. read more

I dropped off two chairs to be reupholstered in September 2020. I was told that work would be performed on the premises and that the chairs would be ready for pickup about three weeks after the fabric came in. I paid for the fabric and left a separate, required deposit for the chairs. I called. I stopped by. I waited. I requested updates and return calls. Communication was spotty at best. Finally, I picked up both chairs in May 2021 along with the fabric, which had (allegedly) just come in. The chairs were partially disassembled and had been sitting in the store for months. On the way home, I discovered that the chairs were entirely bug infested. My assumption is that, where there are bugs there are bug eggs as well. I just could not risk it so paid for bulk trash pickup of the chairs. So, I now have 20 yards of fabric and no chairs on which to use it. Of course, I am also out of pocket several hundred dollars, including the bulk trash pickup fee. I wish negative stars were a rating possibility. :( read more

Would give 0/5 stars if I could. If you want to your furniture in worse shape than when you left it with these people, then by all means, give them your business. My mom gave them some chairs we've had in the family for years just to get reupholstered. She paid hundreds for the fabric she wanted (that she ordered through them) which apparently never came. They kept telling her it was on back order. In the mean time, the chairs just sat in the shop. At one point she stopped by the shop to check on their status and someone had left their hoagie wrapper and drink and other lunch items ON one of the chairs. She finally got fed up after months of waiting and nothing getting done, so she went to get the chairs back. They NEVER gave her a refund for the money she paid them, and to top it all off, the shop had BUGS that had found a home in the chairs, so she ended up needing to throw them away in the end!!! Absolute SCAM ARTISTS, this shop should be absolutely ashamed for stealing our money AND our family chairs. Shocked they are still in business. read more

Good selection of fabric. If you are just buying fabric, you'll be ok. But do not under any circumstance ask them do the alterations. You will be waiting for months and you won't be happy with the results. read more

My mom and I came down to 4th Street when I was planning my wedding not sure what we would find. We were hoping to find fabric for her to make my wedding dress. We ended up finding it here at Maxie's Daughter. Every other place we looked for white silk had dingy, dirty, may-have-been-white-at-one-time fabrics. Maxie's Daughter had clean white silks and they were really helpful checking for marks and measuring the fabric out for us. Needless to say the dress came out beautiful and my mom and I had so much fun shopping on 4th street we came back a few months after my wedding to buy fabric to make a slipcover for an armchair of mine- and again we ended up getting it at Maxie's Daughter. I think it's the cleanliness of the materials and the helpfulness of the staff that keep us coming back there. read more

Maxie's Daughter knows her store, and you can ask when you walk in if she has what you're looking for. Unfortunately for me, she didn't have any of my specific needs, but she knew fabric row very well and sent me in some good directions. She also helped me learn more about sewing projects, taught me some terminology, and she has ample staff to help pull fabrics and cut them for you. They're all very approachable, which is nice, because a lot of fabric row's workers are intimidating in that they're ALWAYS ON THEIR PHONES. Not here. Do NOT under any circumstances have anything made by the tailor here. Also, I wouldn't recommend the fabric, either, because my experience has been that it's pretty low quality. I made the mistake of having them make a futon cover for me back in early June, and after five months, I was out $156 and still didn't have a cover on my futon. And this was after I gave them the OLD futon cover to replicate. Should not have been too hard. I picked out a fabric, they said it would take two weeks, and it took about four months. They bungled it multiple times. First, they put the velcro on the inside instead of the outside, so it didn't actually fit together. Then, they used black velcro on an off-white fabric, so you could see the velcro underneath. Then, they messed up all of the measurements, so you couldn't even fit the cover onto the futon. It was as if they hadn't even looked at the old futon cover and had just winged it instead. So when we asked to get my money back - after months of delays and then the bungled job - they gave me attitude and insisted on trying again. They still couldn't fix it. After over six months, I finally managed to get my money back and my old futon cover. I'm back at square one. Oh, and when they finally reimbursed me, they tried to act like it was my fault, because the fabric I had picked was not the right "width." Maybe they should have told me that before they charged me for it and gave me a futon cover that was too small. Save yourselves the headache of dealing with these people. They will make your life miserable, and you will NOT be happy with the finished product. read more

Eric Trobman really does seem to have a problem with delivering what he promises. I would recommend this place for fabrics, but go somewhere else for tailoring etc. In my case, I ordered 2 relatively small lace curtains. I asked if they could also provide rods. So Eric put the 2 rods on the order, an extra $20, which was expensive but I figured it would save me the running around. The curtains were to be ready in 2-3 weeks. Well, I had to keep calling and calling, and every time I was told they'd be ready "next week." Then the following week they'd be ready "next week." Finally, after 5-6 weeks, I was able to pick up the curtains. Of course, there were no rods, so they didn't charge for them. But now I had the curtains, but it took me visits to 3 stores to find the rods - exactly the hassle I wanted to avoid. Of course, if Eric had said "we don't do rods" right from the start, I could have tracked them down by the time the curtains were finally finished. read more

I am a very picky person and need everything perfect. I recently went to Maxie's to have custom silk drapes made and they were impecable. They special ordered the color blue I needed. They were verypatient in helping mefind the perfect shade. They also helped me find cordinating fabric for my chair and pillow which they are also recovering. I picked up the drapes wednesday a week later than told but well worth the wait. They were perfectly steamed and Eric put the pins in to make hanging them a breeze. I am very excited to see how my wingback chair and pillows look. read more

I needed to get a few 2 by 2 swatches. I found a few fabrics i liked and asked if they did swatches, they told me no and that the minimum is 1/4 yard. i got two pieces and paid 8 bucks. Don't understand why they couldnt just cut off two 2 by 2 swatches for me . it wouldnt have hurt their sales that much whatsoever. read more

I got a lovely fabric that I'll make an amazing project with, but was terribly insulted by the owner/whoever he was, I think 'Mike'?.. First of all, he didn't seem to have an interest in truly helping me. He initially tried to sell me 8 yards of fabric for $100. Then when I told him my budget, he just seemed really sell happy. He wasn't listening to my needs, and almost pressured me into buying at least something. I was just really confused about everything he was saying. I told him about my project, and he asked, "when I was due". At first I thought he meant when I need to be done with my project, which I said Christmas. I was really caught off guard. He exclaimed that people in his family had babies on Christmas. I was more stunned than offended so just shrugged it off. Then again at the counter he asked, "so is it a boy or a girl". That was it. "I'M NOT PREGNANT, OK?!!??!" I know I ate chocolate before I got here, but I'm not a fat person! I won't be back. There's a lot of fabric stores on fabric row. It's a shame because they seem to have a pretty good selection, but you just need to learn never to offend a woman/customer like that. read more

A Stinker, This place doesn't deliver its goods nor does it send a refund for such goods. I ordered upholstery Oct 2008 - have never received it, nor the refund promised at visits to the store, repeated phone calls and 10 emails. I am always told payment will be sent "tomorrow." If it were possible to give it a negative number for a review I would. I picked out fabric, arranged for getting my faux Eames Chair cushions covered, paid in full on November 25, 2017. Many exasperated calls in the interim, it was finally done Saturday, April 28, 2018. A bit more than 6 months! Loose buttons, whining excuses and no apology, no discount, absolutely rude. A friend had some stuff sent here to get thing re-upholstered and it's been a disappointing experience. The man, while nice, isn't entirely reliable and takes a lot of assertiveness to get things done. The work was immensely delayed and he kept pushing back the time until he was confronted. Though they seem friendly and accommodating, they don't actually deliver on what they promise. I asked them to custom-make a tablecloth for me (extra-wide), which they promised within 2-3 weeks. After several phone calls and excuses, it was "ready" 10 weeks later. "Ready," however, looked nothing like what I'd ordered: I'd requested an 8"drop all around, and got a drop of 27"(!) on the sides and 14" on the ends; the seams didn't lay flat and were not symmetrical, and the fabric was damaged when I took it out of the bag. On June 6, 2017, I brought in a template for a banquette cushion and picked out fabric. I was told it would be done in no more than 4 weeks. I called on July 17, 2017, and I was told it was not completed yet due to the holiday, but it would be done soon. As of today, August 28, 2017, it is not completed. I get the run around each time that I call and no one will call back with an answer. If I ever get this simple project completed, I will never come back to this store and I will refuse to pay the other 50% owed. I feel like I was treated well initially and have been ignored since. Do yourself a favor and go to one of the many other stores in the area. read more

I needed some vinyl fabric samples ... took me downstairs and it was a treasure trove. Eric pulled out two dozen heavy rolls to help me get down to the bottom and I left with two dozen samples, two huge bags worth, for just a few dollars each. Didn't need to to go to any other store. read more

I will update this review once my work is done - as with other reviewers I asked for something to be reupholstered over a month ago and was told 2 weeks and since then have kept calling has it's not ready. To their credit it was a really fair price and the fabric was a good price too so assuming the work goes well and is done soon I will change my review. I was considering bringing a chair there to get fixed but at this rate I may not want to be without it for so long! Maybe they should just be more honest about their timelines so people won't get upset. read more

This place is a disaster! Gave them rocking chair cushions for my nursery to be updated with new fabric which I provided and new filling and it was an awful experience. They are completely incompetent, took more than 6 weeks for a job quoted as 1-2 and the cushions do not look good. We had to ask that mysterious stains be removed from the new fabric which we'd provided. Turns out the unfinished cushions were sitting out in the store for weeks. When the job was finally complete after much back and forth, we accepted the cushions since it was clear that we would not get a better outcome. Cushions are overstuffed with foam that is too firm and don't really fit well on the rocker. The owner was very apologetic throughout but did not have the skills or information necessary to get the job done! Would not go back there for anything... ever... read more

Don't EVER do business with these people!!! Never shop at Maxie's Daughter.! In January, I found a fabric I liked at Maxie's Daughter but there was not enough of it to make my dress for my daughter's wedding. I asked if they could get more and they assured me that they could within 10 days to 2 weeks. I heard nothing from them but I gave them an extra week before I called. I spoke to Eric who said he was sorry but that he would call their source the following Monday. Again, I heard nothing. I called again, same story. I stopped in a week later and they assured me it would be in by the end of the week. I called. They would check with their source on Monday. I heard nothing. I called them again. This time I was told that they were getting in swatches of "similar" fabric so that I could choose. The swatches were cheap, shiny, and shocking pink not remotely like the fabric I had ordered. Eric assured me he would email me photos of fabric the following Monday so that I could choose one. No email the entire week. I went to the store today and demanded my down payment back almost 2 months after my initial order and three weeks before my daughter's wedding. To make matters even worse, if possible, the store smells terrible, like a filthy bathroom. Happily the folks at Jack B. Fabrics a block away were able to help me. They were exceedingly kind and helpful and tireless in their effort to help me find a fabric. And they found me the perfect fabric. Do shop there. read more

It's my fault for not reading these reviews before patronizing this store. Do not give them your business! I ordered 2 sets of custom chair cushions which the owner said would be finished in 3 weeks or sooner. After the 3 weeks, I called every week until two months had gone by. He always said the order would be finished in a few days, or the next week, and it never was. He never once called me back or returned my voice messages after at least 10 calls. Terrible place. Brought scrubs there to have them duplicate them and only to have them given to without the drawstrings. Waited now 6 months to have them put the drawstrings in. The have lied and lied and made so many excuses it is tragic. Now I have tried to just get them back and even this has proven impossible. I love this place! I made a long drive down to fabric row the other day and was hoping any place would be open. Maxie's had already been closed for a half hour and they still let me in to get what I needed. They have so many beautiful types of leather (and other fabrics) and the owner is just such a nice guy! This is a tough one. Was there recently shopping for fabric to make slipcovers for furniture. On the pro side, the staff was very attentive, very friendly, and really worked hard bringing out sample after sample. The selection is massive and prices are decent. On the con side, it felt like a lot of time was wasted while samples were brought out that were not what we were looking for... we were very specific with our needs (dark colors and durable) and we kept getting light colors and flimsier fabrics. And in the end, when we ordered fabric, we were told it would be in in a week. It's been three weeks now, and we still haven't gotten our order. This has been explained as a problem with the distributor the fabric is coming from, which is understandable, but we've called about once a week to check on the order status and keep being told 'one more week'. This order was pre-paid. So, to sum up, selection is awesome, staff is helpful, but I would suggest definitely not ordering anything through them. read more

I have had the WORST experience with this fabric store!!!! I ordered fabric over 3 weeks ago to which Eric assured me would be delivered to my seamstress within 5 days, no later. Fast forward 3 weeks and the fabric has just arrived to which he tells me it's not the same colored as I ordered. In my opinion and judging by his response to my constant phone calls, I believe he just forgot to order the fabric as he said he would and was only prompted to do so by my continually calling his store. If I were you, I would highly recommend you visit one of the other fabric stores near by prior to ordering from Maxies. I was hopeful b/c my fiance and I had such a good experience with the staff when we ordered the fabric, but this whole ordeal has turned into one frustrating nightmare for me. read more

NEVER ORDER ANYTHING FROM HERE! This was the worst experience I've ever had in a store, fabric or otherwise. Came in to buy fabric, they were out of it so they offered to order it. I was told it'd be there in 10 days. Ordered 5 yards for $100 and paid for it ahead of time. 2 weeks went by, called and was told it'd be in any day now, waited another week.... Nothing. Called again was told I'd receive a call back....nope. Literally had to call 1 or 2 times a week for months never getting a call back or was told the status of my order.... Two months go by still no fabric so I went in to get my money back, at that point even if they had it I would have insisted on a refund because oh how poorly he runs his business. I understand things can be on back order but the lack of communication is infuriating I'm now two months behind on finding fabric for a wedding that is in 2 weeks.... Thanks read more
