The shopkeepers were all friendly and took the time to answer my questions. There is food and also some local vendors for things like wool blankets which seemed well priced from what I saw elsewhere. We're talking about a huge variety of different types of fish, all locally caught, and prepared in a mind boggling array of different styles. They've got cold smoked salmon, hot smoked, salmon with different herbs, spices, salts, peppers on it. They have fish that I've never heard of, as well as eels! You can get the fish raw, to take home and cook later, or premade fish that are ready to eat on the spot. We got a variety of different smoked salmons on rye bread that was some of the best salmon I've ever had! They offered a bunch of pickled fishes as well. They are friendly, and answer all your questions about the fish, and are helpful in cutting up the food for easy sharing or transport. All of the fish looked and smelled fresh. The quality of the food here is some of the best I've ever seen at a fishmonger! This place is among many other fishmongers and seafood markets in the Old Market Hall, but this one really stood out! You can take your food takeaway, and eat in the center of the food hall under the giant mirror- that's the common eating area.

Very few of the stalls in the Old Market Hall have seating within the stalls- Kalakauppa E. Eriksson is one of the few places that you can kick back and relax with some seafood. The clerk is very friendly and knowledgeable about the seafood that they're selling. I opted for a rye bread topped with cold smoked salmon and some lemon and dill. It was delightfully fresh, crisp and flavorful. I also got two oysters- both from Ireland at three euro each. The oysters were remarkably different in size, flavors, and consistency. I believe that an oyster should tell a story about where it came from, and I could easily imagine cold, brackish waters off the coast. Apparently, Finland doesn't have much of an oyster population, due to the salinity of the water in the bay. The clerk hand shucked the oysters, and had them out in a dedicated oyster dish, a lemon, and a specialized oyster fork. Such a great presentation! They also offered a hot salmon soup that looked creamy and smelled amazing. Alas, I did not opt for the soup. The restaurant was clean, the service was fantastic. It's located near the south end of the Old Market Hall. Restrooms are located at the north end.

Roslund - Kesäisin kauppahallin pisteen lisäksi ulkona, omalla terassilla varustettuna. Suosittelen!

When I saw this meat shop and restaurant in the market hall it felt as if this would be the place…read moreto find a good burger in Helsinki. How can one go wrong when they reportedly sell some of the better beat in town and they have nice sign stating that the burgers are prepared medium rare or medium and you have to specifically ask for well done and they do not recommend it. Sounds like my type of place :-) We opted for one double cheese burger and a single Roslund burger with a side of fries and a side of salad. The burgers are not cheap, a single burger is €13, double €17 and the sides are €3 each. We ordered, specified medium rare and got a little number sign and they said they would call the number when it is done. We sat down upstairs, very nice seating area with views towards the water. After a while I noticed they were calling lots of stuff in Finnish from downstairs, we ordered in English and my estimate would be that most of the guests were also not Finnish and despite that the staff refused to call the numbers in English. Just louder and louder in Finnish. Luckily I had a low number so I actually recalled what it was in Finnish but otherwise it would have been endless running up and down the stairs to check what they actually were calling. After a long wait the burgers finally came. They really looked nice and I for a while thought they would be worth the price but what a disappointment. The burger was totally flavorless, no spices at all, meat also tasted like nothing. Despite us ordering medium rare and them stating they do no do well done both burgers were well done. Since we waited 30 minutes already we just did not have the energy to send the, back. A friend who showed a bit later also got his burger well done (had not specified anything) and he had also seen the chef (open kitchen) drop a burger on the floor and take it up and send out to be served. Not impressive at all. The side salad was uninspiring, actually only a green salad so nothing special at all. The fries were nicely crispy but so much salt on them so not possible to eat. The space is nice but will not go here again, as the food is bad, service slow and prices high. It if would have been a bit cheaper it could have deserved a 2 star rating but considering the price this is just way too bad.

I enjoy a good laugh and thus, another reviewer's low marks being partially related to the Finnish…read morestaff SPEAKING FINNISH gave me just the boost of humor I need at 5 a.m. when I can't sleep. When one is visiting another country and one bitches because someone in that country won't speak ones language, one sounds foolish and entitled. I also don't believe for a hot second that they would drop a burger on the floor and serve it. Finland has one of the strictest restaurant and food handling codes and I sincerely doubt that with their open-kitchen situation they'd risk it. I think that's a lie. So now we have an entitled liar giving scathing reviews. Surprise! All that aside, I'm a vegetarian and I still give 5 stars to Roslund. My husband loves high-quality meat (that sounds all kinds of open to interpretation). These guys are meat experts (woot!) so I spend a bit of time there inquiring about various types of meat (I am beginning to enjoy this). Just tell them what you plan to do with the meat (haha), how much you're looking to spend on the meat (ahem), and they'll give you the perfect cut, at the right price point (please don't be cheap when it comes to meat), and provide tips and pointers on prep and cooking. They're always spot-on, according to Meat Man. Good people, great meat selection, best burgers in Helsinki (I think I heard that from the meat-eater in the house), and a great place to take visitors from out of town for huge juicy burgers. And all this from someone who won't touch dead meat. Damn. They must be good. **Note to foreigners, tourists, and/or non-native speakers residing in a Finnish-speaking country (better known as Finland): They're Finnish (surprise!). They speak mostly Finnish. Most Finns speak English well. These guys and gals are the same but it's touch and go. Just like in the US. Where most people speak just one language: English. So when you write a review about how wonderful Roslund is, I suggest you give props to people who have taken the time to learn to speak to you in YOUR native tongue.
