Old Market Hall fishmonger!
This amazing seafood market is absolutely delicious! They sell small plates of pre-made seafood, ready to eat on the spot. Very few of the stalls in the Old Market Hall have seating within the stalls- Kalakauppa E. Eriksson is one of the few places that you can kick back and relax with some seafood.
The clerk is very friendly and knowledgeable about the seafood that they're selling. I opted for a rye bread topped with cold smoked salmon and some lemon and dill. It was delightfully fresh, crisp and flavorful. I also got two oysters- both from Ireland at three euro each. The oysters were remarkably different in size, flavors, and consistency. I believe that an oyster should tell a story about where it came from, and I could easily imagine cold, brackish waters off the coast. Apparently, Finland doesn't have much of an oyster population, due to the salinity of the water in the bay.
The clerk hand shucked the oysters, and had them out in a dedicated oyster dish, a lemon, and a specialized oyster fork. Such a great presentation!
They also offered a hot salmon soup that looked creamy and smelled amazing. Alas, I did not opt for the soup.
The restaurant was clean, the service was fantastic. It's located near the south end of the Old Market Hall. Restrooms are located at the north end. read more
