Dr Matthews will charm you and pretend to be your friend but in the end he doesn't care about you. Here's an X-ray that' was provided to me by a dentist years after Dr. Matthews did a "post" for me. The post went straight out the side of my bone and caused an infection that is causing lots of issues. Dr Matthews NEVER came forward and said he messed up, nor did he take an X-ray after the surgery and correct the issue. Every dentist I've seen has said this is HUGE AND HORRIBLE mistake and are shocked when they see the X-rays, and have called it a "VERY BAD DAY" that Matthews must've had. If you don't want this to happen to you, and get the cold shoulder when you confront him to fix it, then go elsewhere. read more

Good dentist, love the whisperjet for small cavities for my kids. Billing department is awful. They will straight up lie to your face. When asked if my insurance plan was in network, they said yes, then I was charged the out-of-network prices. I received a $300 bill for my daughter with no explanation except it showed my daughter's name and $300. Took multiple calls to get an answer (I'm not going to pay $300 without knowing what it is for). Then I received conflicting details and finally figured out that Dr. Matthews is simply not in network. This was met with a shrug from the billing person and I was told that I would just be sent to collections and they bear no responsibility for what I was told. Other times they have provided services I didn't ask for and quoted costs for services and increased the costs once the services were provided. There has been a billing issue every single time I've gone. They use the line that they bill insurance out of courtesy. That's the dumbest thing ever. WATCH OUT! Learn from my experience. If you are reading this review, you must be looking for a good dentist that is going to take good care of you. I will tell you that if you are looking for good care, this isn't to bad of a place to go. I don't write reviews often, but when I do, I try to be as truthful as I possibly can. Now why the 1 star review if there service is good? The main reason behind the poor star rating is their failure to be upfront with extra fees and charges. They often send texts that proclaim, "if you cancel within 48 hours of your appointment there will be a $50.00 charge." There is NOTHING wrong with this. There should be a charge if you cancel on them because the Dentist is expecting you. What is NOT okay is to then change that $50.00 fee to a $150.00 fee right there on the spot. This is called lying. I actually asked the head of the Office there where in writing it says I owe $150.00? I said I would be happy to pay the $50.00 that was described to me via text, but had no idea where the $150.00 came from. Needless to say, they don't have it printed ANYWHERE. So, they could charge you $1,000 if they really wanted to. Of course I still paid the $150.00 because I am an honest and good individual. I hope this review and experience at least helps you realize this companies integrity and intentions when it comes to your business. They want your money, and they will fight you over $100.00. I personally will be taking my business elsewhere. Loved the service and kindness here, but when it comes down to transparency and honesty, which I feel are of the most importance, this is not the place to go. They have changed their policies lately. I'm going back to all my positive reviews and switching them. It all feels anti-comfort, anti-patient now. At cleanings, only one of the kids were offered nitrous oxide. That cold air/water can hurt sensitive teeth and the laughing gas helps with that and anxiety in general. A couple of them asked why they didn't have it this time. No blankets offered. When I requested it for a child that felt cold to the touch, they forgot. I went and got it myself later. It sounds a simple thing, but these little details are what made me fall in love with this place. My one child that DID get nitrous, didn't have anything to watch or listen to. He wasn't in the mood for a movie, but he didn't know music was an option. He was 13, so it was a longer (more like for adults) cleaning... They didn't communicate with me when the dentist was ready to review things like they did in the past. I had to search between rooms to catch him. I didn't even speak with him about two of my children. All six were scheduled at once along with me - even though I said I wanted to break it up between two days. So, this is why I was searching rooms to see where my kids were and try to talk to the dentist. I ended up canceling my appointment because it was all overwhelming. The dentist seemed busy with other patients too. Even though my kids weren't done until 10:30, and my appointment was supposed to be at 10, they charged me a $50 cancelation fee. As if the $900+ in cleanings from my insurance and scheduled appointments for over $2500 work wasn't enough!!!! They also required a credit card to hold this appointment, like they didn't trust me to keep it. Now I'm sitting outside in the waiting room while they do work on my 6 year -old. They refuse to allow me in the room or in the hallway outside the door so I can just hear. I'm DONE. We will not be back after this. Gary Matthews was the best Dentist in the world. He was the only dentist to teach me why u was getting cavities and pointed out that they were all in between my teeth, which was an easy sign that I wasn't flossing. He explained how bacteria grew and that it was critical to floss once every 24 hours at a minimum to avoid these types of cavities. That was 10 years ago. And needles to say, my cavities stopped! So naturally switching from Gary Matthews to his son Blake Matthews was something I didn't want to do. I avoided it until Gary wouldn't see any more patients. Personality types were very different from Gary to Blake. Not in a bad way at all but just different. So it was easy to think that the service would be different too. Sometimes it felt like I was waiting longer to be seen and I was quick to think "I never waited this long with Gary". I have even had conversations with other patients and have heard them share the same feelings. I recently had some major work done that involved 10 crowns. My teeth are very sensitive and I was very worried about getting any work done. Dr Blake Matthews spent hours with me coaching me on what to look for an what not to, where concerns should be and where they shouldn't. There was never a push to schedule the work or urgency to make a decision. We must have met 4-5 times on the same subject and every time, no mater how busy he was he took the time to answer ALL my questions. I say this because it is easy to get frustrated when visits take longer then planned but I now understand the reason we sometimes wait longer then others is because when Dr Blake Matthews is with you, you are the most important person in the room. He won't rush to another patient or rush the work he is doing on you. He makes you the most important! I have loved my crowns and even though my teeth are so sensitive they took their time to take care of me and were very gentile in doing the work. I have never regretted moving from Gary to Blake. Love the Matthews smile team and am so thankful for all they do. Thanks for being Awesome! I have never left a one star review for anyone, but this office is unethical and they have terrible customer service. I first went in and met met Dr. Matthews and he is A very good sales person. I came back for some work, and was there for two hours when I was told it would be a half hour to 45 minute appointment. In addition, I had several things done that I did not want and it was not explained to me what they were doing. I was very disappointed and upset but when I contacted them to explain what happened to give them a chance to make it right, they were completely unwilling to communicate or work with me. read more

I had a nightmare experience at Matthew Smiles, and I hope to save you from having a similar experience. TLDR; this office is a "drill and bill" practice with terrible customer service and abysmal quality of care. I weirdly have always loved going to the dentist. But Dr Matthews has changed that for good. In December, I was flossing my teeth and felt some sharp pain. I made an appointment with Dr. Matthews and I told him the whole story. He checked me out and said there wasn't anything stuck in between my teeth but they noticed some minor decay on the X-rays. He recommended a "small filling." - no explanation about what or why, just that it would be a quick visit. I asked the front desk about my estimated portion and why there were two charges. The girl said it would be a four surface filling - a major procedure. I said, "Oh, Dr. Matthews just described this to me as a small filling." She responded sharply, "It's a four surface filling." At my next visit Dr. Matthews completed the filling and said I was all set. No special care instructions, no pain meds mentioned. After I left the office, the numbness wore off and I started experiencing incredible pain - which I quickly knew wasn't normal, so I called Dr. Matthews' office. Julie picked up and was short and dismissive and said, "Like I told you before, this was a four surface filling..." I interjected, "Dr. Matthews told me this was going to be a small filling." She continued in a rude, condescending tone, "You basically just had surgery on your tooth. Of course it's going to be sore. You should take some Advil." I was upset but followed her instructions. I took the maximum amount of Advil but even then was up all night in pain. I called back the next day, on the verge of tears, and said I needed to speak to Dr. Matthews or an assistant. The assistant I spoke with informed me that the pain I was experiencing was not normal. She said I probably had an infection and would need antibiotics, and she prescribed me stronger prescription pain killers. She told me if the pain didn't go away, I would probably need a root canal. I was shocked. At no point was the possibility of a root canal ever mentioned to me when I was in the office! After a week of antibiotics, and continual pain, I called back saying it wasn't getting better. The assistant said I needed a root canal. I asked to come in and speak to Dr. Matthews about what happened, and to discuss my options--if I truly needed one. Another rude front desk girl said, "We're swamped with patients wanting to get in before the end of the year. I'm not sure we have any appointments." She told me the only time I could be "fit in" was 10 am and that I would be waiting for Dr. Matthews for two hours. Unbelievable. I also asked her if Dr. Matthews was an endodontist. She said, "he has taken lots of extra courses so he can do root canals." I pressed again: "Is he an endodontist?" She said he wasn't an endodontist per se, and that they'd call me if they could get me in. She then called back and said she spoke to the Dr. and he could take me at 3pm (that day) for the root canal. Not a consultation. I had wanted to talk with him about everything. I told her I could possibly do that but I needed to call and make sure I could cancel my afternoon commitments. I told her I'd call right back. She said, "If I put you down for this appointment and you call me back and tell me you can't make it, we're going to charge you as a no show." I was shocked. This was the straw that broke the camel's back. I told the girl I was not going to take the appointment and would be finding an actual endodontist, not a dentist, to fix their SNAFU. Later, the endodontist that performed my root canal told me that I had an infection in the tooth caused by the shoddy work done by Dr Matthews. Sadly, I am not alone. There are a plethora of negative reviews on yelp (several under the "not recommended" section) and on google. STAY AWAY! read more

We have given these guys, chances over and over hoping they would improve (3 or 4 years) but they continue to let us down. It's hard to say if they are honest or not, but I'm leaning towards that they are not, in regards to the dental work that either needs or doesn't need to be done. Hands down their WEAKEST LINK IS THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE. Their staff is often very fake and drops the ball on insurance and appointment/scheduling things. I'm pretty sure they would never admit to any of this because they don't believe in the motto that the customer is right, most of the time, they see things as they are right and the customer is wrong. I've been coming to Matthews Smiles since I was a kid. I started seeing Dr Blake Matthews shortly after getting married more than 20 years ago. (Before that, his dad Gary was my dentist.) He's a consummate professional and I really appreciate the options he gives me for treatment. I've never been in any pain in his office and I really appreciate being able to watch movies during a long or hard treatment. He's definitely not the cheapest dentist in the valley, but for me, I feel like I get what I pay for and it's worth the additional cost for the peace of mind. read more

I have lived in Orem for 38 years and have seen a couple of dentists before I got married, They were both good dentists. When my wife and I got married, We consolidated dentists as well as many other things. I was a little worried at first, because I HATE going to the dentist! My concerns were soon alleviated. Dr. Blake Matthews and his staff are out of this world. I have never had a doctor call me personally after a procedure like Blake did after my last implant. He not only called me to make sure I was doing ok, but he also sent flowers to my Mother-in-law, who also sees him, when they heard she was going in for a knee replacement surgery. Blake and his staff routinely go out of there way to show that they don't just care about taking your money, they care about the people they are taking care of. For the past sixteen years I have never once had a bad experience with their office. If you are looking for a family friendly dentist, take my word for it, you will find it in Blake. He not only has iPods and gameboys for the kids to play with, but he has movies for them to watch and his staff will even makes balloon animals for my kids. Wow! That's how I feel. Haven't been to the dentist since 2006 for a checkup, I'm that guy, not very fond of going to dentist if you can tell by how long I hadn't gone. Anyway, I was extremely pleased with the service received from start to finish. I seriously loved it and can't wait to go back ha! The laughing gas mint flavored was on point as I got my teeth cleaned by Ginger, watching a movie on the ceiling. Before I knew she was done. After that we did a check up followed up by Dentist Matthews coming in and throughly in detail explaining everything that was going on with my teeth. From computer screen, to having a camera to show exactly what was wrong and how he would fix it. He spent the time with me to explain the options and come up with a plan broken down in a few phases. After that I got a teeth whitening tray mold start up with one of the dental assistants, every single one was friendly. The price was very reasonable which makes you pay with a smiley face knowing you got your money's worth. There's no surprise why the reviews are so good. I tried my best putting into words my experience there. To summarize, I have a kid on the way, and thinking of the future I'd take my kids there. Long winded review, but had to be done.
