Matthew's Antiques is a fabulous find on Rt. 40! The upstairs is filled with above average, well-maintained antiques and collectibles of every sort. A very pleasant browsing experience. But, respectfully, they are risking serious liability issues with 1/2 price items in a basement that is unbearable with (black?) mold stench. I literally could not breath, it was so toxic. There is no humidifier and the mold is just clinging to everuthing. I'm now in my car with "tight" lungs and persistent dry hacking. A person with asthma would have been in serious trouble. You can't smell it upstairs, but one wonders if mold spores are circulating in the air. You expect dust and and a bit of mustiness in antique stores. This was not that. It really ought to be reported for the sake of public safety. Items in the basement would be dangerous to own, in my opinion, if they are of fabric, textile, wood, or paper (there are rows and rows of books). It's a wonderful shop, but I'd emplore the owners to gut and clean that basement, treat for mold, and add humidifiers or close that whole area downstairs to the public. read more
