Matte blvck might just be the best barbershop in San Diego. All the barbers are really friendly and you feel like your catching up with old friends every time you go in. I hate going to barbershops where you don't feel welcome and are intimidating and this place is just the opposite of that. Plus they offer you a FREE drink every time you walk in! Personally I never considered getting a haircut as something special enough to have a preferred Barber or in some cases a Backup Barber. For me it was always just another check in the box and whenever I need a haircut I always look up the nearest Barber in the area and go there. The same dull experience time after time that really was 50/50 since I almost always asked for the same cut. I've lived all my life in CA and have been able to reside as far north as Sacramento down to Chula Vista. Needless to say, I've visited MANY barbers throughout CA and most of which I'll probably never go back to for various reasons. However, if you were to ask me for recommendations on where you might want to go and you lived in the state. I would hands down say this is The One. This is the one with The Experience to change it all. The owner, as well as all the staff members, are not only as jovial and warm as the art imbued within the interior but experienced barbers who are adept and attentive to their clients. I remember walking in for the first time and I almost instantly knew this was the place wasn't like any of the barbers I had been too before. The barber who assisted with my haircut took every second he could to ensure my haircut was the best it could be and never settled for anything less. Rene is a great barber! I moved to North Park about 6 months ago, and discovered Matte Blvck right around the time it opened. I was really hesitant to leave my last barber shop, as I'd been going to them for years, but they were way out in East County and the drive just wasn't worth it anymore. I'm super glad I tried Mayte Blvck, because like I said, Rene is a great barber, and has been my go-to ever since. I'm not great at communicating what I want out of a haircut, but Rene gives me exactly what I wanted (or better) every time. Rene is really thorough, and I've never found a literal hair out of place. Rene trims the long hair on the top of my head super evenly, and also does a flawless skin fade on the back and sides. A lot of barbers struggle to work with long hair, especially when the sides and back are shaved, but Rene makes it look easy. Speaking of shaves, Rene is also one of the few barbers I've had who really knows how to use a straight razor. I never get razor burn or skin irritation, just a very smooth shave. As for the shop, Matte Blvck is very chill and modern. You can see the professionalism all of the barbers carry in their work, but they also don't take themselves too seriously. It's a very relaxed environment where everyone seems to get along and joke around. There's none of that forced barbershop conversation either, so if you're not the most talkative person (and I am not), you can just sit back, relax, and get a great haircut. 10/10 would recommend Rene at Matte Blvck! read more
