Dom's the kind of barber you stick with. I followed him over to Matte Blvk ever since he moved there. It's a great shop with a really good vibe and nice people and a great set up all around. Dom is easy to talk to, but what I respect most is how serious he is about the craft. He's always paying attention to the details, trying new techniques, dialing things in. You can tell he actually cares about getting better, not just getting you in and out of the chair. Consistent, professional, and takes pride in his work. That's really what you want. read more

The staff was friendly, but unfortunately I had a really disappointing experience with my perm. I specifically asked for a soft, natural-looking perm to add texture and loose waves, and that's what I was told I would get. Instead, the result was the complete opposite. The stylist also didn't take my haircut or hairstyle into account, so the curls ended up laying in the opposite direction of how my hair naturally falls, making it extremely difficult to style. I tried giving it time to settle before leaving a review, hoping it would improve, but it never did. I'm especially disappointed after spending over $300 on a result that was nothing like what I asked for. It feels like a complete waste of money, and I left regretting the entire experience. read more

Dom is hands down one of the best barbers I've been to. Every cut is clean, efficient, and exactly what I ask for. On top of that, the conversations are always solid and never awkward, always good energy. At this point I don't just see him as my barber, but a good friend. Highly recommend if you want consistent quality and a great experience. Me dejó bien firme read more

Haircut was bad. Really bad. The barber did not listen to a word I was saying and basically gave me some haircut I specifically didn't ask for. On top of that I was in the chair getting my haircut for well over an hour and twenty minutes. He smashed my ears down for over half the time and that was pretty uncomfortable. At a certain point I just asked to leave. Honestly I can't remember being more unhappy with a haircut. All that said, service is great. Everyone is really nice. The space is really cool and comfortable. Prices are reasonable. But the haircut is hell. I highly advise staying away. I found out my barber (Scott) was pretty recently out of barber school so I imagine this place hires younger, less experienced guys, which helps keep the prices down but the haircuts can be hit or miss. Scott was really nice but I think he has a lot more training to do before he does this for a living. read more

Matte Blvck - Two weeks after haircut and I still have razor burn - Barbers Near Me - San Diego, California

Matte Blvck - Cool Vibes, But Some Room to Improve Visited Matte Blvck in North Park for a haircut today. The salon has a great aesthetic--modern, edgy, and artistic, with some really nice mural work that gives it a unique vibe. It's conveniently located and easy to get into, which is always a plus. The staff were friendly and welcoming, which I appreciated. That said, there are a few areas that could use improvement. The interior could benefit from better upkeep--some visible dust and stains around the air vents, walls and a bit of general clutter made the space feel significantly less polished than it looks from the outside. The biggest issue for me was the stylist. While personable, he was frequently distracted--taking phone calls and chatting with others during the appointment. Unfortunately, I also didn't feel heard when I gave clear instructions about my haircut. I asked not to cut too close at the back due to a scar, and to avoid cutting too short on top and sides because of cowlicks. Unfortunately, both requests were overlooked. While I won't be returning to that stylist, I might give the salon another shot with someone else--there's definitely potential here. Just be sure to communicate your preferences clearly and perhaps ask for someone with strong attention to detail. With a bit more focus on cleanliness and stylist quality control, Matte Blvck could be a standout in the neighborhood. read more

I'm super picky about my fiancé's haircuts, but Aaron always gets it just right. He takes the time to really listen to what you want, and if there's ever anything you're not 100% happy with, he's more than willing to fix it on the spot. He genuinely cares that you leave feeling confident and looking your best. Every single cut and beard trim he does is clean, sharp, and consistent--my fiancé gets compliments on his hair every time. Aaron's attention to detail and pride in his work really set him apart. He's also well-known and respected in the area, and it's easy to see why. Everyone we've ever recommended to Aaron ends up sticking with him as their go-to barber after just one visit. He's just that good. Whether it's a fade, lineup, or beard, you can count on him to deliver every time. We won't go to anyone else--and whenever someone asks who we recommend, it's always Aaron at Matte Blvck in North Park. He's the best. read more

Matte blvck might just be the best barbershop in San Diego. All the barbers are really friendly and you feel like your catching up with old friends every time you go in. I hate going to barbershops where you don't feel welcome and are intimidating and this place is just the opposite of that. Plus they offer you a FREE drink every time you walk in! I started seeing Frank The Barber and I got to say he is top notch! I personally use to cut hair myself and I only trust frank when it comes to cutting my own hair. On average his haircuts only take 40 minutes and I've never had anybody better then him. If your looking for a true master at the fade and someone who your gonna look forward to seeing every haircut, you need to check out my guy FRANK! read more

My fiancé & I walked in randomly to get him a haircut. It had been about 2.5 years since he had his hair cut professionally so we were a bit nervous... BUT WE ARE SO HAPPY. Matte Blvck - Barbers Near Me - San Diego, California

Personally I never considered getting a haircut as something special enough to have a preferred Barber or in some cases a Backup Barber. For me it was always just another check in the box and whenever I need a haircut I always look up the nearest Barber in the area and go there. The same dull experience time after time that really was 50/50 since I almost always asked for the same cut. I've lived all my life in CA and have been able to reside as far north as Sacramento down to Chula Vista. Needless to say, I've visited MANY barbers throughout CA and most of which I'll probably never go back to for various reasons. However, if you were to ask me for recommendations on where you might want to go and you lived in the state. I would hands down say this is The One. This is the one with The Experience to change it all. The owner, as well as all the staff members, are not only as jovial and warm as the art imbued within the interior but experienced barbers who are adept and attentive to their clients. I remember walking in for the first time and I almost instantly knew this was the place wasn't like any of the barbers I had been too before. The barber who assisted with my haircut took every second he could to ensure my haircut was the best it could be and never settled for anything less. Walking out I felt as if this truly was a new me, one that no previous barber had been able to sculpt and for that I will always recommend this place to anyone that may ask. Taking the simplicity of a haircut and turning it into a luxurious venture, this shop offers anyone and everyone who comes through their doors a professional, classy and friendly time. That's what I call the Matt Blvck experience. read more

Found my new spot for haircuts. Rene is normally who I will schedule myself with. He is super friendly, communicative, respectful, professional and also does a very good job at cutting hair. I've sat with multiple barbers from this spot and I can say that it's the same service between them all. I've had great experiences and haven't gotten a bad haircut from this shop. Thanks Rene for always keeping my haircut looking fresh. read more

Matte Blvck - Haircut - Barbers Near Me - San Diego, California

Rene is a great barber! I moved to North Park about 6 months ago, and discovered Matte Blvck right around the time it opened. I was really hesitant to leave my last barber shop, as I'd been going to them for years, but they were way out in East County and the drive just wasn't worth it anymore. I'm super glad I tried Mayte Blvck, because like I said, Rene is a great barber, and has been my go-to ever since. I'm not great at communicating what I want out of a haircut, but Rene gives me exactly what I wanted (or better) every time. Rene is really thorough, and I've never found a literal hair out of place. Rene trims the long hair on the top of my head super evenly, and also does a flawless skin fade on the back and sides. A lot of barbers struggle to work with long hair, especially when the sides and back are shaved, but Rene makes it look easy. Speaking of shaves, Rene is also one of the few barbers I've had who really knows how to use a straight razor. I never get razor burn or skin irritation, just a very smooth shave. As for the shop, Matte Blvck is very chill and modern. You can see the professionalism all of the barbers carry in their work, but they also don't take themselves too seriously. It's a very relaxed environment where everyone seems to get along and joke around. There's none of that forced barbershop conversation either, so if you're not the most talkative person (and I am not), you can just sit back, relax, and get a great haircut. 10/10 would recommend Rene at Matte Blvck! read more
