Unfortunately, life is what it is, and I found myself in a dangerous situation with a neighbor whom I had to obtain an emergency order of protection against. I met with attorney after attorney to discuss my case and all but one seemed more focused on telling me/bragging how great they were, who they knew, and how my case was so simple and would be settled quickly. Thankfully, I knew better than to believe any of what I was being told and more importantly, discovered Michael Strauss. While he too believed my case was not exactly complicated, he recognized that the situation could change in a heartbeat and instead of making me promises he would never be able to keep just to sign me on as a client, he discussed best and worst case scenarios from the start so I could adjust my expectations. And as he predicted, my case grew more complicated and eventually put my own personal safety in jeopardy. Instead of focusing on billing me for every minute that he was working my case, he paused all of this to ensure I was safe. He took on aspects that an attorney would normally not and if they did, they would charge substantially more. He was great at first and recommended a solution, and the moment I paid him everything went to hell. What was supposed to take "a few weeks" took 6 months, was done incorrectly, and I had to contact a second attorney to contact him to provide the services I had paid for. He made errors in our wills, he forgot numerous times about meetings with my family to sign documents (wasting two hours round trip driving), gave possibly 15 promises in email regarding when I would have documents, and every one of them were broken. At some point he stated that my documents had been sent but did not receive tracking information.....they are considered "Lost by the post office" to him so God knows if he actually sent them out and someone has my estate planning, or if he just gave me one more BS excuse. I am currently paying someone else to undo some of the work Howard did and correct it. The new practice stated he used cookie cutter templates that did not even speak to IL laws correctly. He is unorganized and has no customer service skills. I wouldn't recommend him for anything.

After finally cutting my losses and retaining counsel elsewhere it turns out these people have quite a reputation as being impossible to work with, unprofessional, and downright inappropriate. They only have their own best interests in mind and don't care about you as a client or the longterm health of you or your family. You will pour tens of thousands of dollars into your case with these people for nothing to happen, documents to get lost, and you to get treated like you're nothing more than annoying gum stuck to the bottom of these people's shoes. There are so, so, so many better options in this city for you to represent you. Even under the best circumstances, divorce is a horrible time in your life. Don't make it more horrible by retaining these people. Go elsewhere. Full stop. If I can stop even one person from spending money with these jerks, this review will have been worth writing.
