I can't thank Tommy Najarian and his intelligent, caring staff enough! We came to Mathnasium with a different set of circumstances. My child was in high school and attending an independent study school. The math books in SDUSD are horrific and I just couldn't be of any help any longer. A friend of mine told us about Mathnasium on Friars so we decided to check it out. We met with Tommy who explained how the system worked and the different options that were available to us. After taking an assessment to find out where my child was in terms of her knowledge, a curriculum was set up and lessons times were scheduled. Home work was also allowed for the second half of the lesson hour. We went for about 2-3 months, and then Covid hit. I think there were about 2-3 weeks of downtime and then they had it set up to book appts online, and the kids could do the work from home with assistance over zoom. This worked out wonderfully for us. My child was able to bring her grades up, understand the lessons where she lacked comprehension and get help with her high school math. She didn't mind going at all. The instructors were wonderful and never made her feel inadequate. She got her confidence back with her success at school. After about a year on the program, we switched to private tutoring. She did so well her junior year that over this last summer she took a stats class at Mesa and was able to ace the class. Her senior year looks great!!! I wanted to let all the parents know that no matter what the age or grade of your child, this place can and will help your child succeed. Another summer means another round of playing catch up for our kid who again didn't learn much this school year (from the same incompetent teacher at AEACMS). After just a few weeks she's back on track to actually stay in line with a global math skill level for her grade level as opposed to the local, remedial standard that is being taught. While I understand to some degree the limitations that are thrust upon teachers in schools I don't accept the disregard for accelerated learning opportunities for those kids who can excel beyond, to the greater challenge. This place is fantastic!!! My nephew never really liked math and used to struggle to get through his homework. We first took him to other tutoring companies, but they just gave him tons of additional worksheets to do on top of his homework. This just made him dislike math even more. We then decided to try Mathnasium in San Diego. After just a few weeks at Mathnasium his attitude towards math started to dramatically change and his grades have been improving ever since. They didn't give him extra homework to complete. All the learning was done at the center with the guidance of their instructors. They focused on helping him understand the concepts rather than just showing him how to do the problems or just memorizing formulas. He now actually loves math and loves going to Mathnasium! I am very pleased with the structure they have, that knowledgeable and friendly staff, and their ability to write upside down! Yes, you heard me they write upside down so all the students can see it in front of them instead of flipping the pages back and forth. I think that's pretty talented and a great skill and helping the kids stay engaged. My son absolutely hates math, but ever since he's been going to tutoring here he's very excited to catch up on what he's been missing all these years because they make it so fun and easy to understand! They complete a full assessment on each kid and then schedule a structured learning plan which has been so awesome for my son. They don't let him move on until he 100% understands the content. I just looked at my last Yelp review in 2014 when our son started high school. Well few years later now that same kid was accepted to Georgetown University before even starting his senior year of high school. The kid plays soccer, that was a big part. But without his academic scores, especially in math, no way does he get in. Mathnasium had everything to do with this. Tommy and his staff have been like family. My second grade twins both attended Mathnasium for different reasons... one who is mathematically-inclined wanted to be further challenged, and the other for self-confidence. Tommy's tutors did just that. The initial assessment placed both kids at their appropriate levels and both excelled. Though they sometimes complained about going, once their session ended, they were always in good spirits and motivated for more math (strangely)! My daughter has always been a good student but math is her nemesis. Whenever I tried to help her we would butt heads and it was beginning to take a toll on our relationship. Enter Mathnasium. More recently my daughter was enrolled in a pre-calculus class and the teacher at her school had never taken that level of math so there wasn't a teacher to help my girl. Tommy the director and tutor is a genius! I was in desperate need for math tutoring to prepare for a test to join the Navy. I'm a college graduate, who needed to review algebra, arithmetic, and geometry. I even asked him about some physics concepts. Tommy first assessed my strengths and weaknesses in math. He immediately developed a plan to prepare me for the exam. He worked one-on-one with me, and showed me step by step how to algebraically solve the problems. My 14 year-old is starting her second summer session at Mathnasium, and I can't say enough about this place. The instructors are all knowledgeable and caring - especially the owner, Tommy, who really works with each student to bring out the best in them. It's like a gym membership, where you can bring your child anytime on a drop-in basis. Each kid has their own binder with custom work, based on their initial assessment. There is usually a wide age range at any given time - from elementary all the way through high school. They work with an instructor in small groups (average size is usually 1-3 students). The teachers are all fairly young and fun, and they're all uber smart. The best part of Mathnasium is the way they make the lessons engaging, interesting, and geared towards critical thinking. It's not only great for those kids struggling with math, but also for kids like mine who are used to being drilled to death with prep tests for STAR testing.
