Our son is in second grade and we are taking him here twice a week for math support. So far, the experience has been great. Our son does not complain about going, mainly because they make everything fun and game-like. Some of the instruction is with adults, but more often it is with High School aged "math-letes". My son really prefers the time with the big kids, and has responded very positively. So far, the results are good. We've seen steady improvement at school and my son is gaining confidence in math. We signed up for six months and will likely continue to go through the summer. We contacted Mathnasium in Grimes because we had heard good things about them. We took our son there because he was struggling slightly in algebra 1. Having already putting four daughters through college, I know how important it is that they really learn algebra. Also, my experience of getting a bachelors degree in engineering at Iowa State, without having a strong grasp of algebra, was not pleasant. So it was important to me that our son get a very good grasp on the subject. So when I met Tonya at our son's first assessment at Mathnasium, I was very impressed with her approach to understanding the foundations of algebra rather than just being able to do algebra. She put together a program tailored exactly to what he did and did not know, and after four months, he has began geometry at Waukee in ninth grade. So far, he says that it is "easy". This is probably because they are doing review of algebra, and for the first time in his life he really understands what he's doing. I cannot give a higher recommendation than to choose Tonya at Mathnasium in Grimes. Also, there's a great coffee shop and Jimmy John's next, making it fun to pass the time.
