After meeting with her, explaining how shy and anxious my kid is, she wrote him off within 5 mins for not being enthusiastic enough about going to a tutor and said Fusion could not help. (He succeeded no problem at another place last year, I just wanted a shorter drive and thought Fusion's website looked good). During the 2 tours she gave, she loudly proclaimed the silent area was no talking, completely disrupting the students that were there at the time. She demonstrated her agenda was more important than the students. She seems completely disingenuous about the school's stated goals and exceptionally rigid about how kids should be. I am really glad we will not be interacting with her regularly.

She simply loves learning and while in traditional private schools was bored and increasingly anxious about social interaction and group work. She's been at Fusion for two years. She works 1:1 with various teachers depending on the subject and while officially in 7th again this year (we decided to have her repeat as we are worried about her being closer in age to her peers when she graduates) she was able to take HS college prep biology last year, HS zoology and psychology this year in addition to her more typical classes (English, algebra 1, French 2, and medieval history) The teachers are wonderful with her. They have a collaborative style and really keep her focused, engaged, and enthusiastic. I receive academic summaries from each teacher everyday letting me know what they covered and how she did. Looking forward to her taking science in person at the Newton campus next year so she can do the labs in person rather than virtually.

The staff is talented and committed. There is a parent participation component, as with all cooperative programs. This is something that drew me to the program. I was amazed my first year how varied people's situations are - one or both parents working outside the home part or full time, nanny's, grandparents and family friends helping out at pick-up and drop-off, as well as moms and dads working as stay-at-home parents. I didn't carpool, but some families arranged carpools. I often swapped child-care of my youngest daughter (when my oldest was in school) on parent-help days and then would watch another family's younger child when it was their turn. I've benefited from the sense of community at the school, and the chance to have a few hours every month or so to be with my child at school. The best part though is the positive experience my children have had at the school, developing social skills and learning through play.

It is a cooperative program, so you have to be open to that aspect. I personally loved helping in the classroom and getting to observe my child interacting with his friends. There are some volunteer components -- one work day a year to help maintain the school and grounds and service on one committee -- but they certainly aren't onerous. It's not for everyone, but so far I've found it very manageable as a working parent. The other parents are very supportive and open to switching schedules. I'm new to town, so I've found it a valuable way to meet other people and find a sense of community. The curriculum is play-based, so the focus is more on developing imagination, healthy social interaction, etc. I'm looking forward to seeing how the curriculum develops as my son progresses.

I have a bachelor's degree in Child Development from Tufts University, and am Preschool Lead Teacher and Infant/Toddler Teacher certified by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education & Care. That said, this preschool was, by far, the most dynamic, caring, and stimulating preschool I've ever had the privilege to work for! New Covenant is a preschool motivated by the Christian faith. Grace is said before snack, and positive Bible stories are often shared in the morning circle. The Christian faith inspires the school's dedication to thanksgiving, forgiveness, and honesty. The classrooms are well-equipped with a variety of stations and activities. They are clean, meticulously organized, and children-focused. The schedules are intentionally built to foster creativity and support learning while maintaining a four-year-old's attention span. The teachers are extremely well-qualified and deeply compassionate. There is intentional and frequent communication between teachers and parents, and teachers are seen as partners in the development of the children. Academically, the school thoroughly prepares its pupils for kindergarten and beyond. Besides the essential social skills that every kindergartener needs in order to succeed, New Covenant teaches age-appropriate mathematics and literacy, adapted to each child's individual level. Student progress is recorded and analyzed to maximize the efficiency of lesson plans. The arts are a priority, and music is often included as a tool in the lesson plans. She was quick to acknowledge the way VT fell down in this case, rectified the situation by working with my chosen non-profit to donate the hours I had paid for, and offered a complementary 10-hour bundle in the event I needed them personally in the future. Hopefully her "can-do" atittude can be further disseminated through the company's front line customer service management and staff. I revise my rating to a four-star in the hopes the remaining star will be incentive for the company to not make Elise's reaction a one-off... Dishonest company that started off great and ended up horribly. I paid north of $6k for a number of tutoring hours in advance based on the recommendation of their consultant. A large portion of those hours went unused and were set to expire. I called and got them extended for another year, or so I was told. In the end, by about December '21, it became clear I was not going to use them and I called and asked the company to facilitate a donation of those hours to a student in need. Not only did they never recontact me about my request despite a promise to do so, but the hours then "expired" again without warning. I called them today and they refused to reinstate them, facilitate the donation, or provide any other remedy. A sad story of misleading statements and lack of vision/service. Buyer beware -- do not buy anything more than you absolutely need from this company because you are likely to lose the money you put in. There are many other options for online tutoring (Wyzant, for example) where the terms and service are much more straightforward.

I am so impressed with Smart School. Smart School hired me recently as a math teacher, and it's…read moreshocking how advanced all the students are there. They have fifth graders happily solving tenth grade math problems! In general I've found the students at the school are an exceptionally bright bunch, but I believe their success at Smart School is not due to natural aptitude alone. It's also the culture at Smart School, where they take children of all skill levels and make them the best math students they can possibly be- by challenging them just the right amount. I've seen several students go from hating math to enjoying it and feeling proud of their skill level. It also helps that the classes are tiny (1-4 students) and there's a great deal of individual attention and encouragement.
