The Round Rock TaeKwondo is affiliated with the Tiger Rock program. They have several locations in the Austin area and membership to one allows you to take classes at any of their locations. They offer TaeKwondo, Jiu Jitsu, grappling and Yoga classes for toddlers to adults. We have been here for almost a month now. This is location is owned by Mr. Toohey and run by his wife, both are super friendly. Mr. Toohey is very good with kids. He is firm, yet nurturing. He has their respect and they look forward to coming to class everyday. I have never seen my boys so excited to go anywhere. They are even cleaning their rooms and practicing piano just so they can go to TaeKwondo. The new location is much larger, with large viewing windows and a separate room for their after school care. The family membership is a great deal so my husband and I are going to try their Jiu Jitsu program. After calling around to different schools in the area and reading reviews, I decided to take my…read more10-year-old daughter for a free trial at Maldonado ATA Martial Arts. We were greeted and well received once we walked through the door. My daughter is bit shy and reserved when first meeting new people, but they immediately made her feel welcomed and guided her through her first class. I was in Taekwondo as a child myself when I was around her age, so I have some experience with martial arts classes. I was very impressed with the instructors' ability to connect with the kids and how much my daughter loved it. She immediately told me that she wanted to go back. We were provided some pricing information, but I really appreciated that we weren't pressured into signing up for anything that day. Since my daughter insisted that she wanted to return, I signed up for a short trial because I was wanted to see if her interest would fade before making a longer commitment. I have enrolled her in music lessons and soccer, but she didn't enjoy those activities as much as Taekwondo. I offered to take her to try out some other schools in the area, but she liked ATA Maldonado Martial Arts so much that she only wanted to go there. After the trial ended I signed her up for a year because she really enjoys it and looks forward to her classes. I enjoy seeing her at home practicing her forms and kicks. I have seen her confidence and discipline increase. Also, the Maldonados are great people who truly care about their students. You can trust that they are in good hands. During class, my daughter was accidentally kicked in her knee during a drill and she was in a bit of pain. Mrs. Maldonado immediately grabbed an ice pack and helped my daughter recover from the kick. Mrs. Maldonado gave my daughter the option to return to the class when she felt ready and also told her that she was free to go home. I was thinking that maybe my daughter would want to go home, but she insisted on returning to finish up the lesson. My daughter was a bit embarrassed for shedding a few tears in class, but then Mr. Maldonado reassured her that it was perfectly normal to cry and that she had no reason to feel embarrassed. TLDR: Maldonado ATA Martial Arts is a great school run by great people. My daughter loves it and maybe your child will too. You have nothing to lose by checking them out for a trial class!

Most of the high reviews are from years ago…read more Master Kim, the owner, is missing and rarely interacts with students. The instructors are hit or miss. If you get one of the 2 that actually teach they have different approaches that contradict each other. A 3rd teacher is a student that has no business teaching. He has no leadership ability and the students have no respect for him. At one point in 2022 their main instructor at the time went on vacation and then was out sick for an extended time. During that time, the owner, master Kim was still no where to be found and the classes were taught by students. When the instructor came back most of the classes were a disobedient mess. No one was prepared for that round of testing so they had the students repeat the previous test since they went 2 months without learning anything. When you look at the calendar it is packed with classes, but that is not up to date. They teach multiple experience levels at the same time in a relatively tiny studio. There is no common space, for parents, gear, backpacks or shoes. Just a narrow walkway with a row of benches right off the mat. Students get close enough to hit spectators. Kids are stacked too close to each other and run into each other while practicing forms. There is so much confusion about which class is at each time, you almost always end up with lower belts in the advanced class. They take 30 minutes to warmup, split into groups, maybe do 5-10 minutes of Taekwondo, and then spend the last 15 minutes of class playing a kids game like tag or jump rope. The week before each test they realize how under prepared most students are and suddenly get serious. They need everyone to sign up for the test because it is a revenue generator. You get to the test, where master Kim makes an appearance. His rambling and confusing comments drag the event beyond the expected time, usually running an hour late for 1 hour time blocks. The test devolves into him referring to everyone as "you" since he doesn't know any of his students names. He starts teaching a class during the test. It is really more judgement on the poor quality of instructors rather than the students trying to pass. The parents sit there asking themselves where this level of instruction has been the prior 3 months. Ultimately the students try multiple times, take breaks to have 1 on 1 training sessions before they try again. Eventually after enough attempts most of them pass. I wrote this review while sitting at a belt test, watching multiple students fail even though they required a testing form to be signed in advance by an instructor, acknowledging they were ready. Master Kim determines if the kids pass the test, but the instructors somehow have no idea what his standards are. In the weeks leading up to the test, us and other families were requesting help on specific aspects of the test but the help provided by the instructor (who is actually a student on the performance team) was minimal and provided no constructive feedback. Over half of the students failed and the owner told those families that he would personally guarantee to work with them for 2 weeks and they would retest and pass. From Friday to Tuesday master Kim forgot about the promise he made. It turned into assigning a different instructor to work with them which turned into students (who were not instructors or black belts) working with the kids for about 15 minutes in one of the classes. The most frustrating part of the re-test was an instructor telling the kids if they worked "this hard" before the original test they would have passed the first time. Absolutely disconnected, if the instructors were consistent every class, rather than just the week before a test, their students would have actually been prepared. But keep letting the kids run around playing tag with pool noodles.

There are not enough instructors in each class, so kids will be practicing the moves incorrectly and no one notices. But the biggest issue is that the main instructor talks to kids a lot about bad guys and bullies, at first saying that the kids shouldn't use what they've learned in class on others, but then a very confusing several minutes later it sounds like maybe they should do just that? I don't see any emphasis on the self control and discipline that makes martial arts so valuable. Parents yelling on the sideline for their child to "get him! Make him hurt!" are ignored, the kids spar with other kids at very different belt levels since the sparring classes are open to everyone from beginners to almost black belts (with the one at the higher belt level told not to hold back, which kids do naturally because they don't want to hurt each other), discipline issues during class are dealt with with barely a consequence, and the emphasis is only on attendance and leveling up, regardless of anything else.

We went and my daughter had a blast and the parents couldn't say enough good things about the instructor/owner Mr. Evans. So we talked to Evans and he said for her to come to a real class for free and see if she liked it (as the birthday parties are a little more loose and silly compared to regular class). Sounded like a solid deal so we did 2 days later and to our surprise she loved it. She goes to class about 3-4 times a week only because some days the class for her belt group was at a time that we couldn't get off work in time to get her there. The new location is awesome because it is so close to our house and Mr. Evans and some of the black belt student instructors like Donald and Daeyon (god I think I spelled that right) are amazing. The amount of patience these guys have with working with kids from 5/6 all the way up to 13/14 year olds for the "kids" classes is amazing. We have seen such a big difference in our daughter's confidence as well as manners too (not that she was a bad kid or rude to begin with) but they teach kids about respect and courtesy and what it means to have self discipline and other values. Plus the exercise she gets has been great for her too, and I feel that if she did get picked on by bullies she could deal with it. The place is great, lots of our neighbors have daughters that go there and it is awesome seeing the girls kick ass as much as the boys. We couldn't get my daughter into any extracurricular activities like Dance or anything, so we were very happy she has found this. She looks forward to every class, is growing more patient and disciplined. Grand Master Pak and his daughter Ah Young both teach. Master Pak has high level black belts in multiple arts, as well does Ah Young. They are both very humble, kind, and patient. There students respect and adore them for good reason. I could not disagree more with the anonymous poster who said that this school is a money making scheme, nor is it "a belt factory". I've seen children and people in my own class not advance when they could not pass a test. Also, Ah Young is over the children and Master Pak comes to help when he is needed for the sheer volume of students or chasm between belts in a given class. A note about the chairs. These are tough, Korean people, who care deeply for their art. They devote the majority of the space to students and a small space to an office and chairs. There is honestly no more room for chairs and I have no problem sitting on a floor or standing. I've seen children grow confident and strong here. I've seen friendships made, and a family environment in place before I arrived. The family of students in my class has welcomed me in, stepped in to help me learn, and invited me to dinner and parties. But above all the deep respect that the 8:00pm students have for their teacher is incredible. They all wait on the store front for him to leave. They wait, then bow and honor him as he washes goodbye. His students truly love him and I am proud to be a part of something so great and genuine.

The training is serious, but the environment is incredibly welcoming, friendly, and fun. There is simply no faking such an authentic and warm environment. Master Pak has been very patient with me, helping me get back into TKD after a difficult year recovering from lower back surgery.
