The schedule has a well-attended 6 a.m. class for local commuters (it's one of the few times I know I can get on the mat) as well as competition classes and extra-curricular strength training and stretching classes. The school has cultivated a great community that supports all levels (and age groups) of jiu jitsu from high-level competitors to novices just finding the sport. Adam and Karen, the owners and head coaches, provide excellent instruction and truly care about their students. When I competed in a tournament in Manhattan, Adam went with me to coach from the rail. I was the only student competing that day and he still made time, away from his own family and commitments, to head into the city. Last, the kids program is great. The coaches create a fun atmosphere that is still conducive to learning and building their skills in a safe manner. If you're curious about training, I highly suggest checking out the school.

Being open for over three decades, I was confident that this was not a fly by night place, and was something I could look forward to participating in for a long time. The top reasons to choose Al Bender's Academy for instruction in traditional martial arts would be, mainly: (1) authentic and effective instruction in any or all of four styles of Chinese martial arts, Northern Shaolin, Taiji (Yang Family Style), Xingyi, and Bagua, with emphasis on the first two; (2) instruction is conducted in English language, so you won't need to be fluent in Mandarin Chinese to learn; (3) his personable, humorous style (watch out for some killer puns, haha!) helps keep a low student turnaround, a camaraderie with and among his students, and a high number of his students who have been inspired to work long and hard enough to earn black-sash promotions; (4) his teaching strategy offers a balance of both form and proper technique and application for practical self defense. Disclaimer: I've trained under Sifu Al for 13 years, during which I attained 2nd degree black sash. I chose New Jersey Tai Chi through a regional magazine, and I was delighted with its holistic approach to fitness, martial arts, and mind/body wellness. And my experience there did not disappoint. In the short time that I have been practicing with Harry, Paul, and others, I am learning not just the movements and breathing, but also leveraging the strength of my entire body. In addition to the physical movements, I am also learning to focus with my mind on the flow of energy and listening through Push Hands with my mind's eye. In every class, Harry demonstrates the application of those elegant moves into practical and powerful self-defense tactics. It's still too early to tell the full health benefits yet, but I feel more flexible, more at ease with my mind and body, and TaiChi is now a part of my exercise routine.

Hope has done nothing but ensure that my priorities are met and always takes the time to hear me out and make me feel a lot better! As for their customer service, I always go to Chris for an issue, one of the operations manager of the gym. The head instructor, Jay Hayes, and the program he has is the reason why I take a 30 minute trek from Jersey City to train Jiu Jitsu. I've tried several places around my area with an open mind, but the teaching and learning environment found at NJ United is just incomparable. The positive vibe in the room leaves all egos at the door and what you're left with is a great group of guys striving to help each other reach our full potential of the art. They have a great kids program and i've seen guys pick up the sport in their 40s and 50s. No matter your skill level, your first day will be fun and not as scary as it may seem. I was intimidated at the beginning but I'm glad i took that first step to a better life. Everyone knows how it feels to be the new guy, so the guys are always kind and willing to break down the basics. so don't worry! you won't get manhandled and mercilessly submitted on your first day. His one-on-one time with students is vital, and since day one I've felt at home. The way he can break down the little intricacies of every move, and his ability to pinpoint little corrections you can make are what make him a fantastic coach. His BJJ knowledge has brought in high level guys from all over the state, and i can see why. There's not one bad thing i could say about NJ United. The facility is clean, the staff is amazing, training partners are great, and the different skill levels are what make this place my BJJ home.
