I loved this place. It reminded me of a similar place that used to be near where we live. You can find practically anything you can think of here, including vintage candy. We had fun walking around in the historic building, and looking at all the great offerings they had for sell. It's also fun to look up at the collection of antiques surrounding the perimeter of the sales floor. There were a lot of smiles there, especially an old timey radio that seemed to be playing some Bill Monroe. Fun! read more

Mast General Store was a place I was told by my Airbnb host that I had to go to in town. While the town was small, this store made up for it. This store is amazing. It's enormous. And it literally has everything one could think of or imagine. I think when I heard the word, "General Store" I was thinking more hokey things and not really items I'd want, but man, I ended up spending a lot of money here! The main level is clothing, men's, women's, children's, and off to the side is their shoe area. The top level is their outdoor/camping area. But the bottom floor is where I struck gold. They their candy, popcorn, and so many gifts here. I stocked up on all my Christmas presents here. They had mugs, cooking supplies, spices, postcards and a ton of other useful stuff. The items were really great quality too. Everything here was perfect from the items they sell to the friendly customer service of their staff. I'm not sure if I'll ever be back in that area, but if I am, I'm going back to Mast General Store. read more

Fun, fun, fun. This store has three floors and a little bit of everything if you're looking for gifts or souvenirs. I went in May and all their summer clothes are on display. I went downstairs and looked in their cooking section and was pleasantly surprised at the selection of items to browse and choose. I went for a cookbook about North Carolina cooking and was pleased at the selection. It's a fun store so please stop in if you're in town and see what they got! read more

The Mast General Store, located on Main Street in Waynesville, NC, has been opened since 1883 WOW! They carry a huge selection of Mountain apparel including name brands, Mast General Store branded items, and locally made items. Name brands include Patagonia, Yeti, Oboz, Lulu-B, The North Face, Columbia, etc. The store has two entrances, one of which brings you into the main shoe and travel item(s) side, while the other door opens up to the main apparel and specialty side, both sides connect via an open door way once inside the store. The Apparel ranges from outer wear to Knifes and locally homemade jams, such as Bear Jam made from different berries... ohh so good! I love that they have "Mast General Store" branded items, which are perfect for remembering your trip. So even If you aren't in need of mountain gear, you can always find a souvenir for your trip. I bought a t-shirt and baseball cap and love them both! They typically have mark down prices so look for the red markdown price on the tag, I was able to get a baseball cap for $12.50 and my shirt was discounted too. They also carry "Waynesville" branded items. If you have children be aware they also have a Mercantile and Candy floor, located downstairs, with various candies, teddy bears, etc... so good luck haha! Even if you aren't looking to purchase anything, this place is great for browsing and window shopping as they have so many uniquely cool items and I love it's been around since 1883 . They are open Monday-Saturday 10am-6pm and Sunday noon-6pm, so the next time you are in Waynesville be sure to stop in and check it out. read more

Needed some new hiking boots and went here mostly because they stock different brands and you can of course try them on. Friendly folks and lots of products and creaky wood floors too. They also have old timey candy and kitschy gift ideas. Prices for hiking boots were same as mail order places and I got to make sure I would like them so I am pleased. read more

Mast General Store is a source of fascination for me and I am NOT a shopper! My friends suggested we go to Mast and I am glad they did. The store is huge with multiple floors and contains all kinds of hiking and riding shoes and clothing along with a wide array of gift items and home decor. The thing that made me really love Mast General Store was the amazing sale they were holding the day we shopped. The store was saturated with sale prices and many items featured an additional 70% off sale price! With these conditions I become a shopper! Everyone in our party found several items. I left with two zip front fleece jackets and a lovely Columbia fleece Pea Coat. I would recommend Mast General Store to anyone coming to the Waynesville area. read more

Yes, another Mast Store. You know, the general store with the big barrels of candy. Normally you can peer in the window of one of these places and see, the colorful displays of sweet treats. This particular location has clothing and shoes on the first level, with the candy and kitsch in the basement. Always a blast to browse through that stuff. When you're downstairs you can hear every creak and footstep from above, making this the world's creakiest floor. As usual, well-staffed with friendly people and a clean bathroom. The kids found some pretty collectible minerals/rock for 59 cents each; they came with little cards describing what they were and where they came from. Yes, I'm shaking my head too, that I actually paid money for rocks. Yes, it's touristy and I can't believe they haven't hit a market saturation point but they really do hire some helpful employees! read more

I just love the Mast General Stores. I think this is the fifth one I've been to, and probably the biggest so far. Very clean, fun to shop and browse, great selection of candy (as always) or clothing apparel. Staff is friendly as always and you immediately feel right at home. I have grew up 7 miles from Waynesville. Over the years it has changed a lot. It used to be one of the towns everyone went to to get their clothing, groceries, things they needed for everyday life and a theater, Now it is pretty much a tourist town. Places to eat, art, coffee shops, theater gone, mostly things the seasonal traveler looks for to take something home to their friends or to remind them what a nice time they had in Western North Carolina. Mast is one to the places I like to visit when I go to Waynesville. The verity is unmatched in the area. Everything from hiking supplies to candy, clothing, toys. One place we always find something to buy and use or take home to friends. Everyone is always friendly and ready to help with your questions. When you are done or before you shop go to frog level and visit the Panacea for the best expresso in the area. read more

Mast General Store is a cute little shop in Waynesville that has a little bit of everything. We always make it a point to stop in at least once whenever we're coming up to visit the Smokies. The first floor has many clothing options from t-shirts to more expensive regular clothes and boots. The second floor has the name brand outdoors brands items. The lower level, which is my favorite, has all the goodies. There are barrels full of candy, toys, kitchen-y stuff, home stuff, and miscellaneous items. Mast General is a staple of Main Street, Waynesville. The main floor caters mostly to the needs of tourists to the area - a lot of random trinkets and clothing emblazoned with the name of the state or an image of Smokey Mountain ephemera. It's still fun to dig around. One of my mom's favorite purses is from this floor of Mast General. Upstairs is all the outdoor gear you will need to spend a day out in the nearby Smokies - water bottles, fleeces, light camping gear, etc. They carry a lot of respected brands at pretty decent prices. The lower level is full of old fashioned candy displayed in barrels. I tend to stock up on old favorites like Mary Janes, Sugar Daddies, and anything chocolate. Grab a bag and fill it up with whatever you choose - you pay by weight at the cash register near the stairs. read more

It's a little crowded in the store, and I didn't see an elevator to help mobility challenged folks get from floor to floor. I do want to give a shout-out to Hannah in the shoes. I LOVE Mast! I grew up just outside of Waynesville and have shopped here for many years. Walking around on their old crackling wood floors is perfect when you're in the mountains. Their selection of old fashioned candy downstairs is awesome. I do not go to this store without getting a bag of fresh popped popcorn and a glass bottle of peach Nehi soda. We love the mast stores! The kids love the toys and candy from downstairs my wife likes the clothing and footwear! My mom and grandmother love all of the nostalgic goodies downstairs! I'm very happy to get a glass bottles coke and a bag of fresh popped popcorn every time I'm in there! I love the camping and backpacking supplies upstairs! I could spend days in here around christmas time and always find the kids great toys you can't find anywhere else anymore! Balsa wood airplanes, magnetic controlled diving submarines, fuzzy wussy kits and on and on! Good selection of cast iron cookware and it makes me happy to hear the floor creak and pop as I walk across it! read more

It reminded me of visiting grandma's...you know, lots of warm and fuzzy things that you only find at grandma's and then go downstairs and you have found grandma's cookie jar!....But with all of your favorite childhood toys and candies....Im talking sesame chews, lemon heads, even BAZOOKAS! As quaint as this "general store" is, I am not totally in love with it. Upstairs, you have clothing for casual and outdoorsy types, a separate room to the left with footwear, jewelry, camping doodads, rocking chairs for chillin' near the front, and a small cooler with old-fashioned, obscure sodas. The floors creak. Now, downstairs. We will take the stairs. I love going down either set of side-by-side staircases, as there are no signs designating which is "up" and which is "down", and I also love bucking the system, even though there is none to be bucked, despite dirty looks I sometimes get when bucking. Down below, you get: pretty window suncatchers, hummingbird feeders, bodycare, kitchen junk, sale tables past the repro vintage toys, modern toys that have class, gags, magic tricks and overpriced kids' books; stuffed animals, collectible tin mini "lunchboxes", candles, small housewares, etc. Has a back door which leads to small, private lot. Parking can be tough on Main Street and its environs. There is a bathroom. The best stuff deserves this separation from the above words- the fresh popped popcorn without butter but with light oil and salt, and the vintage candy barrels. Some candy is today's, and the rest is from all other decades from the twenties on. So interesting. It is so much fun to try different olde-timey stuff in order to discover if our ancestors had taste buds or not (most did). You can get "Ice Cubes" here, which are hard to find, but not necessarily vintage. It can take half an hour to decide what you want, so be prepared to spend time by the barrels. Plus, most items are mini-sized, so you are not breaking the bank. However, I have tempered my edibles passion with dispassion. This is due to the waaaaaay overpriced clothing items. Joe Blow nor his female counterpart can shop here for clothes. Even sale prices are overpriced. I quickly put down pairs of shoes that were supposed to be on sale, because I felt like the help peeking into my mistress's dressing quarters. Hey, I guess it's better than buying bolts of calico, but I'll take muslin because I have to. Or cheap candy. read more

Great place to visit for souvenirs, apparel, knick-knacks, and candy. They sell candy by the pound. Some of the stuff is overpriced as is any souvenir shop or popular touristy store. Lots of other great shops around the town. Store is 3 levels. Not very wheelchair or stroller accessible. 2nd floor is Main Street level. Basement is back alley level. Place is a must experience if your in the area. We're from Maine, and this place reminds me (a very little bit) of LL Bean. Very high quality out doorsy items. I ask the guy (with the giant beard) about a good place to fish, and ended up chatting it up with him for about 20mins. The staff is extremely nice and very knowledgeable.
