If you are looking for the opportunity to step back in the past the Mast General Store gives the "Ole Town" nostalgic feel. Think the front entrance of a Cracker Barrel on steroids times 100, then you are in the realm of what you can find @ MGT. We popped in specifically to check out their selection of "throw back" candies. Off to a section towards that back you have the opportunity to grab a basket and walk down memory lane of some old sweet treats. I must admit I wasn't familiar with everything but they did have some fun finds from my childhood. The candy is weighed by the pound, so if you get too excited your tab will reflect your enjoyment. My children has never been to a general store. They had no idea what they were! We had so much fun exploring the store. We not only learned history of how and why stores were the way they were. We loved the feeling of walking back in time but yet feeling modern and accessible. The store was great and welcoming. Many staff members were there to provide assistance, one of them even opened my drink for me when I couldn't because of a hand injury. That was really nice. After 6 years of being in Columbia, I have finally made my way to the Mast General store. We decided to take a walk while visiting Soda City and ran across here. I've been wanting to visit, but never think about it when I am downtown. The store is methodically filled with clothing, shoes, outdoor equipment, kitchen supplies, food, candy and many other items. I cant believe all these yrs living in the Columbia area, I finally went into the Mast General Store! Conveniently located down town on Main St, good luck with parking, its a hit or miss at times. But I do love hanging out DT and discovering new shops and places to eat, Columbia has a small time charm. The store is clean, packed and neatly organized, they have everything that you can think of, literally...Take your time and stroll, this isn't a store to rush thru, they have a upstairs and downstairs. You will miss something if your in a hurry! I actually found some cute sun dresses and ole timey candy in the back area! DESPICABLE experience...no stars if able. Madeline, Greer, John & Nick to name a few of the individuals who looked at me & did not acknowledge me, point blank. Not to mentioned the many of times John looked or perhaps "watched" me as I perused & still didn't speak. I presume playing with the football & snacking out of the candy bin was more important than being professional. Yet, that was not the worse part of my visit. It was when other customers (opposite of my skin tone) close to me were acknowledged & I was still disregarded. Hopefully when the district revitalizes the Main Street area they can go inside MGS & resuscitate the basic concept of courtesy...as money is colorblind. MGS just wasn't ready for my Black Beauty. What a neat place! It is a chain brand but you could never tell. The people here are really what make the difference. I stopped in because I was lost on Main Street and they were so awesome and helpful. True natives who love Columbia and helping those traveling through to enjoy our town. The entire first floor contains the clothing selections, the children's books, and retro toy selection, the bulk candy options, and the home decor selections. Near the back of the store are all the homemade jellies, jams, preserves, and cooking spices, and seasonings. If you ask nicely, there is also a refrigerator packed with Blenheim Original Ginger Ale. It takes me back to a simpler time and you can walk around with the bottles on Main Street and inside the store. The bottom floor is really where the true outdoorsmen/women will find the real jewels. Downstairs is everything from the Eno to Chaco to Arcteryx. Let the adventure life begin! I have bought Christmas presents here, stuff for prepping/survival/camping and just high-quality outdoor shoes and gear. They do run specials but it is rather rare. I don't care though. If I needed a jacket, hiking shoes or a tent in a hurry, it's good to know Mast will be there when I need them. read more

Here's your chance.. The restoration of this building is perfect! Early Main Street charm at its best! The store is pretty fantastic! You can find something for everybody here! From a trendy "North Face" jacket to a 99 pound cast iron fry pan!! I particularly like the all the strange jams, jellies, and relishes. I thought I had already written a review for this place. I guess I forgot. I absolutely LOVE this place! It's one of my favorite stores in town. The customer service is always excellent. They're always willing to help and I'm greeted every time I come in. The clothes they sell are great quality. I love all their sweaters, shirts, pants, skirts, shoes...... Basically I love all the clothes. I gain 50 pounds just looking at all the candy in the back. Their candy reminds me of my childhood. Sooo good. And I love the smell of popcorn while I'm shopping. It's also great getting a bottled coke and peanuts. The kitchen gadgets and other items are great. It's so easy for me to find the gifts I need for others. Downstairs is where the jackets, camping gear, shoes, boots, knives, and other great things are. This store is such a great addition to downtown. I'm so glad they chose Columbia as one of their locations. Now I don't have to go to the mountains to go to one of my favorite stores. Like a Cracker Barrel store but with a bigger selection. Noticed a sizable side walk sale so decided to stop by. It was very much like a Cracker Barrel store but with more clothes and a whole area for outdoor accessories (for camping, hiking, etc). I particularly enjoyed the back of the first floor. There were lots of candy barrels that you could pick and choose from and also some local jarred items and mixes. There were some unique gift items here too along with some toys for kids. There was a lot of clothes, shoes and of course the outdoor things (located on the bottom floor). The clothes didn't seem to go above an XL and it seemed a bit pricey to me. The shoes I looked at (even the ones on sale) were more than I'd want to pay. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Parking was obviously a little difficult since it's on Main street and you are a bit limited to meters. There was a back entrance... don't know if there was more parking back there. Would definitely go back again... am actually planning on it since I'm working on a little Welcome to SC basket for relative! read more

I was looking for a store with a good selection of hiking supplies. I live an hour away and had never heard of General Mast. Today, I was in town for another appointment and decided to visit. WOW! I was greeted as soon as I walked in and given a quick tutorial on the layout of the store. Then, I was directed downstairs to the bottom floor which is entirely devoted to quality, highly rated outdoor gear. Once again, I was immediately greeted by Ashlin. She was amazing. She was so patient and detailed helping me select everything from boots to socks! She really knew the products well. I price checked against Amazon while there. I paid only $8 more for boots (well worth the expertise and convenience) and the other items were priced the same as Amazon. I was so absorbed, two hours literally flew by and I didn't even get to check out to first floor! Can't wait to go back! read more

I love Mast General Store and always made sure to stop in whenever I was in Greenville (and I've been meaning to get to the original store in Valle Crucis), so I could hardly contain my excitement when the it was released that they were coming to Columbia. It's the same quality gear you would expect from them and the same quality service you've come to expect. Always friendly, always welcoming and always eager to offer assistance. Don't forget to check out the candy barrels in the back, and the assortment of canned jellies, sauces and vegetables. Parking on Main St is, as you're well aware, an issue at times. You'll probably have to walk a block or two if you want on-street parking. There is a parking garage on Taylor behind Mast, and you can enter through their back door, but I'm not sure if there are fees/rates or if parking there is free. I'm told (by people that grew up on Main, so don't shoot the messenger!), though, that the parking garage has a history of being a little seedy after 5PM due to it's location in relation to the soup kitchen. They're working on restructuring the upper floors over Mast and will have, I believe, 6 lofts/apartments, hopefully spurring new improvements and redevelopment along Main St. read more
