The description and online reviews painted a picture of a quaint antique-filled farmhouse. This is true. I loved the antiques! The player piano and some furnishings reminded me of my childhood home. The innkeepers showed us around the first floor of the B & B and told us Keurig coffee was available anytime. We were told we could use the wine glasses on the buffet and there were bottles of water in the mini-frig near the dining room. They brought us to the Bridal Room, which was furnished in antiques. We asked for a restaurant recommendation and were not disappointed with their suggestion of Hank's Grill. When we returned later reality set in. There was no water in the mini-refrigerator. There was no closet, the armoire was too dirty and dusty to place our belongings, and the only hook fell off the bathroom door. The following evening we noticed our room had not been tidied, we had already made the bed but towels were not replaced, the shower gel dispenser which was almost empty hadn't been refilled, and the single tiny waste basket was not emptied. I am aware many hotels and inns eliminated daily cleaning since COVID, but it was not noted on the Cave Hill B&B website, nor did the innkeepers inform us. There should have at least been additional towels delivered outside our door, or four sets of towels in the room the first day and shampoo and shower gel filled. The first-morning juice glasses and a beautiful empty pitcher were on the breakfast table but there was no juice or water, therefore no beverages for non-coffee or tea drinkers. When we returned that night the walkway was so dark I needed a flashlight. We planned to have wine on the deck off the upstairs hallway. (The deck was a plus.) There was only one wine glass and it had a fingerprint. The following morning no glasses were on the breakfast table and there was still no water. We would have loved to learn more about the farm and cave but the only times we saw the innkeepers were at check-in and breakfast and that was only for a few minutes while she placed the breakfast on the table. We did not see the innkeepers, nor get a "Hope you enjoyed your stay" at check-out, the process is to leave the key in a basket. Cave Hill B & B is an interesting property with lots of potential but it needs a good cleaning and some Virginia hospitality.

I got a guided tour of the history and its history, Wow! I stayed in the gold room and I loved it! Big, so comfortable, clean, with original decorations. I felt like in a real living old-time home. As of why it is called the Gold Room - you will see the funny story on that in the room! Breakfast was so good: freshly made and generous, served with a smile. I would gladly come back!

I was a bit disgusted at having to use the same toilet paper as a stranger (aside from using a public restroom, I feel that this is different). The soap bar also looked like it had not been replaced, as when I opened the box to use it, it was already wet and smudged on the edges. The shower pressure is extremely hard and actually hurt to stand in there, and the doors wouldn't close all the way so the floor would practically flood. I had clothes on the floor to change into and they got soaked, and they were a good ways away from the shower door. Room is loud with thin floors and walls. There were also crumbs left on the rug in front of the couch that housekeeping didn't vacuum. Everything in my room also just seemed slightly damp, from the bed to my clothes to my shoes. My shoes were not damp before I brought them into the room. Someone attempted to enter my room (probably just got the wrong room number), but hotel staff did not seem concerned one bit when I called down to ask about it. I was a solo female traveler so I was very anxious about this! I also needed to shave off a day from my stay and they charged me an extra $125 to take OFF a day. They also play very loud techno upbeat music late at night in the "lobby" which was overstimulating coming in around 10:30-11:00 at night. I say "lobby" because when you walk in, it just looks like the snacks/drink stand to the right. I walked around trying to find the main desk, and there were 4-5 staff members standing at the desk chatting who watched me walk around and did not offer any help. The bed was okay (but I had to stack 3 pillows on top because they sink too much), and I did enjoy the blackout curtains and location in Harrisonburg. I did not try the restaurant or pool or gym. Overall I would not stay here again as there are literally 5-6 other hotels within view of my room that are most likely better!

The cottages (there are 4 to choose from) are well appointed with everything you need and lack exactly what you don't need in a place like this (phone, tv, or internet). The cottages are in Dyke, VA about 20 minutes from Skyline Drive so it's very easy access for hiking. It's about 45 minutes to Charlottesville where you can shop for groceries, go to dinner, or just hang out if you need to reconnect with the city. The cabins have jacuzzi's, full kitchens, grills, backyards with fire pits, indoor fireplaces and board games. They also have a salt water pool in the main house that you can use (and I recommend after a hike!). Personal touches make this place what it is: they've thought of everything. We also loved the fresh cookies that were dropped off at our house and Chuck and Stew always write us personal notes to welcome us to the house. Looking for privacy? The cabins are secluded and you enter them via a keypad on the door so you don't have to check in or out...just come and go as you wish. I highly recommend this place! And will be back in the fall.

Most of the units appear to have the major stuff updated (Kitchens, Baths & more) but it is a more rustic with older decor, but okay to put your feet on the coffee table sort of place perfect for families. They have access to all of the other resort stuff on the mountain as well.

Upgrades will be needed at some point...but not sure that they'll survive the timeshare tradition. I was lucky to find someone willing to take this off my hands. Paying the annual fee was only slightly less than 3-4 nights at a decent hotel elsewhere. If you're able to buy into RCI and enjoy the benefits of banking and playing the weeks/points game, this is a decent start. I wouldn't return every year. Particularly in the off-season.

Weeks of searching online led us to Silver Lake Bed and Breakfast. Silver Lake Bed and Breakfast is a 1750s log home that sits on a 100-acre farm outside Harrisonburg, Virginia. The house retains its original rustic charm, with hand-hewn beams and bluestone chimneys. The owners have made tasteful renovations over time, too- digital thermostats, glass walk-in showers, and WiFi. There are wide-open views around the B&B. On any given morning, you might catch a glimpse of a cow, a deer, or the friendly farm cat, Maple. There are lovely rolling hills in the distance. It's quiet and peaceful. You'd never realize that a city of 51,000 people is only ten minutes away. It was everything we'd hoped to find. Since we only anticipated about 40 guests, we qualified for Silver Lake's intimate wedding package. That package allowed us to rent all six of the B&B's guest rooms for our wedding party and parents. We were able to hold our wedding ceremony and reception on-site. Weather permitting, the ceremony would be held outside in front of a beautiful arbor overlooking the hills. We'd have our reception under a large tent in the backyard. After confirming the cancellation policy a few dozen times, we booked before we ever set foot on the property. The owners stopped responding after we signed a contract. Weeks went by. We repeatedly left voicemails and sent e-mails, and no response. Finally, our wedding planner had enough and visited the venue. That's when we learned the owners we booked with had sold the B&B. The new owners were taking the reins and would contact us soon. Undoubtedly, this was an anxious time for us. In hindsight, it was the best thing that could've happened. The new owners, Ben and Hannah, contacted us a couple of weeks later. They apologized profusely for the confusion and promised us an extraordinary experience. They delivered on this promise in spades! Since taking over, they made many improvements to the property we enjoyed for our wedding day. We're grateful for their efforts and excited to see their continued progress! Ben recently refinished the front porch. It's a welcome and comfortable place to sit in a rocking chair on a chilly morning with a cup of hot coffee and a book. Their dining room features a giant, exquisite dining table that Hannah artfully decorates each season. It's a perfect place to enjoy a hot, filling breakfast and forge new friendships. Lastly, there are guest books in every room and the main dining room. We enjoyed reading about previous guests' stories and experiences. Hopefully, future guests will enjoy reading about ours! Ben and Hannah worked seamlessly with our wedding vendors to arrange on-site visits and discuss logistics. They communicated constantly and accommodated every reasonable request. We are so grateful that a twist of fate allowed us to meet them. They politely stayed inside for our wedding ceremony, but we insisted they join us for our reception under the tent in their backyard. They cooked and cared for us for days; the least we could do was offer them the same treatment. We are still determining when we'll return to Virginia, but we will undoubtedly stay at Silver Lake Bed and Breakfast when we do. We know we'll leave with full bellies and hearts. On our DC to North Carolina vacation, we stayed in this lovely, well manicured property located in a quiet area. We stayed in the main house, the Redbud Room, which was beautifully remodeled, comfortable and cozy and clean. The ensuite bathroom was well lit with all the amenities. We wish we had more days to enjoy our room. We loved it so much that we popped open a bottle of wine, ate snacks and watched movies for a romantic evening!
