It's hard to recommend Touch Chi too highly. Rick and Troy provide top-flight body work, the kind…read moreyou'd expect to find in a big city. They're booked well in advance, but be persistent: they do have cancellations and might be able to slide you in if you can be flexible. I see Rick, as does my wife, though I've heard Troy is excellent, too. (It was the luck of the draw for me, but I can say that Rick is a truly gifted bodyworker--and I speak as someone who's had a wide range of massage, cranial-sacral, Hellerwork, and other types of bodywork.) This is therapeutic bodywork, the kind that helps to deal with chronic physical issues. Rick has really helped me with the chronic tension in my shoulders, as he has helped my wife deal with a nagging back problem; it's really improved since she's been under his care. A caveat: if you're looking for nice, light massage, look elsewhere. What should you expect? Informed, careful, attention to what you need physically. Are your shoulders bothering you? They'll be worked on, but so will other muscles on your back, chest, and arms that are connected to your shoulders and may, in fact, be the real problem. I've had Rick work on releasing tension in my leg, to realize that my problem knee was much less bothersome. In short, the best you'll find anywhere. We're lucky to have Touch Chi in the Upper Valley.

Beyond finding the gym, passable restaurants, and the bookstore, I also try to find good local massage businesses which isn't always easy. TouchChi came up on a Google search of the area and came highly recommended from the local service proprietors. I had hoped to be able to slide in an appointment at the last minute but found that TouchChi's service and reputation is pretty phenomenal which means they are booked out quite some time in advance. I was finally able to get some time in and had a great 60-minute session with one of the two owners. The space is in a renovated freight building and is clean, minimal, and linear. Troy greeted me as I came in, got me oriented to the space and we were able to get the massage started right away. I found him personable, extremely knowledgeable, and efficient. He made conversation when prompted but was not overwhelming or dominating when silence seemed to be more appropriate. He explained the kind of work he was doing and what he was finding as he progressed through the massage. I was interested in deep tissue work and he accommodated that along with some great forced stretches which worked together very well. I was completely satisfied with my massage session and all the pieces that went into it, including the discounted rate for first-time clients. I'm looking forward to scheduling my next appointment during the rest of my stay in the area. Highly recommended.

The upside is that the shop has gel color that matches regular nail polish colors so one's manicure and pedicure can match. That's a major plus. The shop also does brows. That's great for this area. Janet has a nice looking shop but two ill behaved dogs that tear up magazines, jump on customers with wet nails, and escape from the shop to have other people have to come out and chase them down. On my last visit I actually had to help wrangle a dog in the street with wet toes while the owner did nothing. I got my gel mani redone today again and again she filed down my nails again, ruining their length when I ask her not too. The gel is messily done and looks like plain nail polish. She was hasty, not paying attention and my nails look like I did them at home. I am so disappointed with the job she did. I wanted to support a local business but from now on will go back to either Nefertiti Nails or NGL. The Upper Valley doesn't have many options but this just isn't a good choice.

I called the number and set up an appointment. When I asked Gigi for directions she became very short and said I should know the address because there should be a business card in the envelope. Her phone had a terrible connection so I wrote down what little I could understand of the broken up directions. I ended up driving by the building and had to turn around because it was poorly marked. After walking around the building and speaking to an employee in the "kitchen" I was directed upstairs where I found a locked door at 2:32. My appointment was at 2:30 so I assumed she might still be in with a previous client and I waited. After 20 minutes I called her to find she left to go to the bank because I was late. She was quite rude and snippy about it. I don't believe she ever had any intention of fulfilling the gift certificate with the attitude I got from her. I will be sure to stick with Sojourns where the staff are respectful and professional.
