It's hard to recommend Touch Chi too highly. Rick and Troy provide top-flight body work, the kind…read moreyou'd expect to find in a big city. They're booked well in advance, but be persistent: they do have cancellations and might be able to slide you in if you can be flexible. I see Rick, as does my wife, though I've heard Troy is excellent, too. (It was the luck of the draw for me, but I can say that Rick is a truly gifted bodyworker--and I speak as someone who's had a wide range of massage, cranial-sacral, Hellerwork, and other types of bodywork.) This is therapeutic bodywork, the kind that helps to deal with chronic physical issues. Rick has really helped me with the chronic tension in my shoulders, as he has helped my wife deal with a nagging back problem; it's really improved since she's been under his care. A caveat: if you're looking for nice, light massage, look elsewhere. What should you expect? Informed, careful, attention to what you need physically. Are your shoulders bothering you? They'll be worked on, but so will other muscles on your back, chest, and arms that are connected to your shoulders and may, in fact, be the real problem. I've had Rick work on releasing tension in my leg, to realize that my problem knee was much less bothersome. In short, the best you'll find anywhere. We're lucky to have Touch Chi in the Upper Valley.

Beyond finding the gym, passable restaurants, and the bookstore, I also try to find good local massage businesses which isn't always easy. TouchChi came up on a Google search of the area and came highly recommended from the local service proprietors. I had hoped to be able to slide in an appointment at the last minute but found that TouchChi's service and reputation is pretty phenomenal which means they are booked out quite some time in advance. I was finally able to get some time in and had a great 60-minute session with one of the two owners. The space is in a renovated freight building and is clean, minimal, and linear. Troy greeted me as I came in, got me oriented to the space and we were able to get the massage started right away. I found him personable, extremely knowledgeable, and efficient. He made conversation when prompted but was not overwhelming or dominating when silence seemed to be more appropriate. He explained the kind of work he was doing and what he was finding as he progressed through the massage. I was interested in deep tissue work and he accommodated that along with some great forced stretches which worked together very well. I was completely satisfied with my massage session and all the pieces that went into it, including the discounted rate for first-time clients. I'm looking forward to scheduling my next appointment during the rest of my stay in the area. Highly recommended.

Funny story. I am married to a Chinese man so I speak a teeny tiny bit of Chinese. I like to…read morefreak out Chinese people by breaking it out once in a while. So while that was fun, they did me one better and taught me a few things to say back to my husband. A few things that both freaked him out and maybe turned him on- after he stopped laughing of course. As for their service, it's good. They can be aggressive with the cuticles and way underestimate how high maintenance my sensitive skin can be so that is why I'm not going all five stars on this place. The quality of the manicure is pristine and they aim to please. In case it wasn't clear, they speak English well too. I wouldn't hesitate to suggest J's to a friend but it's not my favorite manicure experience in the whole world either. I do think it's a good value for what you pay. It's my go to in the area. If you have cuticles that don't take kindly to being cut just mention it and they'll do their best to be gentle.

We called they were not in but said to give them 15 minutes and they would come. Sure enough 15 minutes later Janet and her mom I presume showed up and let me tan for 20 min for $7.00!!!!! I've read all these other posts and I must say it's unfortunate... But don't knock it until you try it!!!!!!

Training for the Olympics in a repetitive sport (and really any sport), puts a lot of wear and tear…read moreon your body. In order to be the most successful athlete, you need to maximize your RECOVERY. So I went to Hanover Massage while we were training for a few weeks out of Darmouth on the Conneticut River. Julie Bean was my massage therapist for a 50minute massage. I have never felt better coming out of the massage. I slept like a charm and the next day of training I felt so relaxed. My performance was much easier to achieve thanks to her massage. When my muscles get tight from working too hard (and especially in sweep rowing, working too hard on one side), they get tight and tense, making it a lot more challenging to row correctly and efficiently. I could row and move so much more fluidly after the massage. Thanks to my training I've seen a good number of massage therapists across the country (including at the Olympic Training Center), and I was SHOCKED how AMAZING I felt after Julie's work. I would highly recommend booking an appointment with her if you're in Hanover. -World Record Holder, 2x World Champion, USA Olympic hopeful
