The good: They really have a bit of everything. If you need to find a last minute anything, for a costume party, a dancing gig etc -- I'm pretty positive they'll have it. They have a sections of " goth clothing", adult section in the back, a kids section and everything in between; from clowns to princesses, to fairies and jesters they truly have it all. The make-up section is OK , has all the essentials color wise , fake blood and all that jazz. I was looking specifically for " jester make up", which they didn't have, but if you know what you're doing they definitely have the colors CON: is the price. Biggest "con" of all ( see what I did there ;) Their corsets are priced at $99.. WHAT? I could go to Victoria Secret for a real one.. and some! Ps you can find corset online for $20.. I found a top hat that was cute.. I flipped it over $79.99 . WHAT WHAT? I was flipping it around trying to see, is this made from gold? From magical fairy elves.. a brand name? I have no idea. After years of hearing about the hype and the awful experience I had with Party City last Oct (read Yelp review!) coupled with the fact I was privy to the knowledge that a fair amount of stuff would be on sale, I made my maiden voyage to Masquerade. After we made our way past the mostly plus size $5 corset display and stripper attire masquerading as club attire on the sidewalk in we walked. The left is party decorations as well as children's costumes while the right side is a hybrid of a Hot Topic/Adult costume/make-up counter. What I liked about this place was the variety; it reminded me largely of a place I had visited in NYC called Ricky's (Also year round if I'm not mistaken!). Wigs,hats, stockings, and petticoats galore! Apparently the place has switched owners and the new owners are clearing out the top adult toy/lingerie section since it doesn't match their tastes. I really enjoyed the corset/pin-up/steampunk/etc section because although it was pricey, it was definitely better quality than the cheesy one-time-use costumes most Halloween places sell for top dollar. read more

I admit that I'm usually the type of person who creates his Halloween costumes on the fly. I just find it to be a lot more fun that way. But I'm moving on Nov. 1st, and spent a lot of time making the arrangements. throw in a big band interview that I had, and my time for creativity is seriously starting to dwindle. thank god for this place. This Halloween Costume store is not just a Halloween Costume store!! They're the only one in the City (that I know) that is open year-round for the perfect set of vampire teeth, cheerleader uniform, fake nurse stethoscope, or rainbow clown hair in mid-July. I decided to head to Masquerade on the evening of October 30th (Post-Sandy) -- this place was packed, and a little bit of a mess. However, the staff were very helpful and I did wind up with a costume for the following night. I am curious how the shelves would have appeared had I gone a week earlier; I'm guessing they'd be better stocked and organized. This Masquerade Costume Superstore is sheer chaos. Women tearing down costume-in-a-bag packages from the highest heights of the store's narrow aisles; groups of girls clamoring over the last girl scout costume; old ladies tearing through the wig section; college boys stretching their imagination ("Dude! You be the cup, I'll be the ping pong"); girls looking to be creative with their bunny costume ("I'm going to be a zombie bunny!" Friends: "Eww"); Guy to his bro friends, "One of you has to be Hannah Montana if I'm going to be Billy Ray Cyrus"; Mom to employee, "Do you carry fishnets for four-year-olds?" They've got it all, but it comes at a price, you'll surely walk out of there needing a pint and a pill. read more

Okay, I've been here twice and as baller as their high-end costumery goes (quality corsets and lolita), everything else feels like a trainwreck. There is no organization. There is a semi-clearance section and a semi-non-clearance section. Genders are mixed, wigs are everywhere that they sit fit according to their organization mindset, as is makeup, accessories, the whole shebang. The only clear section is children's costumes. I don't recommend coming here if you're looking for a specific wig type or accessory, because you'll have to navigate the dark labrynths (that are very cool and fitting, but not good for actually seeing things) through all costumes and you probably wont veen find what youre looking for because their selection isn't actually very great. Their hero costumes are not all in one place, but their wizard of oz are, as are their angel/fairy ones (mostly). Other than that, bring your water witch stick thing and close your eyes. There are few visable prices on makeup and hair sprays, and their masquerade masks are all through the roof prices (although beautiful, I saw a metal-framed filigre mask just like your $250 one at target. It was remarkably similar for a whopping $15, where their masks top out.) Overall, I plan to return for some lolita-wear and possibly a corset, but my other trips to this store were like trying to find a Navy sweater in a Hollister. Is this Navy, or is it Black? Are there sweaters over in that corner, or are the shadows playing tricks on me? (Also, side note, obviously avoid halloween. Two weeks ago I was here and found a couple $5 and $10 clearance costumes. Yesterday I went back and the same costumes I had bought were marked clearance, but $30. Also, they never got children's Pikachu costumes in stock despite the flyers suggesting otherwise.) read more

I took a half hour bus ride to get here because I figured I would be able to do all my Halloween shopping in one stop. How wrong I was! They did not have the two simplest things I was looking for (a white robe and a royal crown / robe set) but I still managed to spend $100 because they are so overpriced. After spending my $100, I asked to use the restroom and was told I could not. I just spent $100 at your crappy overpriced store and I can't even use the restroom??? Eff you. Ah, Halloween. The time of year that gives girls the excuse to dress the way they want to all year round but can't due to lack of dignity ,self loathing, and low self-esteem. I love it. This place didn't have the kids running around as spoke of in previous reviews, however it did have cleavage-a-plenty. The wife and I came in here to burn some time before going to Pat's Steaks for some grub and I enjoyed watching her throw on the various wigs and face masks, almost felt like a burlesque house. :) Hehe, cleavage.. Stopped in here the other week needing some final touches for a Halloween party in July. This is one of the only Halloweeen type stores that's open all year in the area that I know of. They carry everything from costumes, wigs and party supplies to an upstairs adult section? Odd. The location is huge. You can get lost inside of this place. I like this place a lot. They have a great selection. The prices are right and the staff doesn't hassle you. Their sales are freaking amazing! I bought six super high end bras here for only $1 each! You can't go wrong with that! They frequently offer amazing sales. I went in looking for black beads, which they didn't have, but they were very informative in telling me where I could find them. We came here for the 3rd consecutive year to place our balloon order for our little one's birthday bash. They were out of some of the Mylar designs we wanted. Also the costumes for kids were NOT cheap - ours cost $24.95 - which isn't awful - but Target had similar cheesy costume for cheaper. Masquerade definitely has way better selection of sizes and types of costumes though. Asusual in October it is a PACKED madhouse. We got there at 10:20 - they open at 10 - but drove by at about 9:50 AM and there were people waiting to get inside. Wow! read more

If you're shopping for a costume or party items in the Philly area, this would be a great place to start. The store is large and has a wide range of costume options. I went in to look masquerade masks and crowns/tiaras. The selection really impressed me. They had everything from the basics to higher end products. Prices were probably a little higher than you might see in a Party City, but they definitely sell more quality items. Would definitely stop back in next time I'm in the need of some party/costume goods. read more

Worst party store to come to. They never have any of the popular balloons available. They don't even think to restock. I come here because it's the closest one from where I live. Never did they once have the number three or one when I came to the store. Nothing in the colors gold or pink or even blue. You would think that's readily available especially because they are popular colors, but nope. The general manager was pretty rude too about it. I asked if I could bring a balloon purchase from somewhere else to get em blown up. Nope. Even when I offered to pay. Don't waste your trip unless you want to be disappointed. If you love to torture yourself with massive amounts of screaming children, and trashy girls looking for revealing costumes then come to masquerade!!! I guess it's okay if you're into that pre-packaged Halloween thing, but that kind of makes my skin crawl. After going to the amazing Pierre's, I wandered into this place because I wanted a cheap tube of white greasepaint. That's it. To my amazement they carried ben nye makeup as well-- all marked up about 3 -5 dollars more than the place I was previously at. Super lame. However they do carry woochie prosthetics which is really cool. After I found the greasepaint, I went to go over to the line... which went from the registers wrapped around an aisle, and snaked to the back of the store. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh. Luckily, it only took me about 5 - 10 minutes to get to the front. I promptly checked out, and went outside only to notice there was now a line to get INTO the store. It went down the building towards the awesome bagel place. All I know for sure is the day after halloween, they better discount the shit out of their inventory so I can go crazy with cheesy home decorations. Any costume you could ever possibly want can be found at this place. That being said, it's hell going there anywhere near Halloween. Don't go unless you are absolutely desperate for a costume. The line for the cashier pretty much wraps around the entire warehouse-sized building. I also think the only reason this store can survive all year round is because about half of it is an adult section - they even card you to go in. But, you know what they say, sex sells. It's kind of hilarious actually. People pushing their way through the kiddies and their spiderman princess costumes to go check out whips and stripper heels. Man, I love Philly. read more

I needed some things for my thesis outfits and I figure I'd give this place a shot. I only found a helmet that I liked but I'm still giving it 4 stars because the help is friendly and the store has a lot. The wig and skank section is really big. Like half the store is acrylic hair and underwear passed off as skirts. If you're a stripper in need of gear, this is your place. If you're not, but want to give your man a night he won't soon forget, this is also your place. For me, I liked giving my mom a heart attack so I spent some time there. Good selection, I recommend it. ;) Just be prepared for cheap materials! Cheap fabric, cheap making, probably made for a couple uses and that's it. read more

This store has all of your costume needs covered. The best part is that it is open year round, as opposed to many of the pop-up Halloween stores that come in and out of the area. I stop by every few months to pick up props for events and they always have what I'm looking for. The prices are a little more expensive than I'd typically expect for cheaply-made, plastic doodads. But honestly, the fact that I can get in and get out with exactly what I need makes it worthwhile. It was the thursday before Halloween and my friends and I still needed to get those finishing touches for our costumes. After walking down south street and only finding stores appropriate for those dressing up as things with "slutty" attached, we decided to get out of there and hit Columbus boulevards Halloween superstore. When we got there we saw that everyone in Philadelphia thought the same thing. After driving around the parking lot multiple times we finally found a spot and then had to wait in line to actually get into the store. What, was Dracula signing autographs? Thankfully the line moved quickly but we entered into chaos. There were people everywhere, Mom's on the phone with their children picking out Disney Princess costumes, Sorority girls getting their handcuffs or nurse hats, and employees dressed up as creepy clowns pointing us in the wrong direction when looking for temporary tattoos. Two of my pack had to actually leave the store because listening to the Cha-Cha slide while bumping into people was just too much to deal with. I finally located the "Punk Rock" section, picked up some Sailor tattoos, a studded cuff and hoped that I would pay a somewhat accurate homage to Axl. "Okay, let's go pick up a case and get out of here" were my words upon exiting. If you need to go to Masquerade, go weeks in advance during the daytime. I was told when I called the store, that in order to order balloons, I had to place my order in PERSON (rather than via phone call), then PICK UP thereafter in person.What a hassle! I'd much rather go to Party City where I could call to order then pick up afterwards, saving myself a trip! Person who answered was not at all flexible and customer service was poor. It's large, but the staff aren't helpful, they hardly have trying rooms (all i found after looking around for 10 mins for them was a tiny little nook with a really inadequate curtain) (probably mooned people). And then you look down and see "oh, it's an overpriced half of a costume missing the essential parts".... like random accessories you put on top of a tunic to look like an egyptian, but no tunic anywhere in the store... they said go buy a big t-shirt! A costume shop open all year round and not just right before and after Halloween?? I am so there! I came in with a friend who was in search of a costume for a belated Halloween party to which she had been invited, and while she didn't find exactly what she was looking for, I still really enjoyed browsing the store and it's wide variety of costumes, accessories, and props. They do have a section of the store dedicated to theatrical makeup and wigs, at which one of the sales staff members will gladly assist with any makeup or wig-related needs. My involvement in theater has turned me into quite the costume and makeup junkie, so it's nice to know there's a place nearby where I can indulge that obsession! read more

Ok, if you decide to wait til 1 week before Halloween to buy your costume, it's going to be chaos--it's just the inevitable truth and there's nothing you can do about it. So, my suggestion...GO EARLY! I bought my costume early in the month and had no issues with crowds, selection or depleted inventory. Their selection really can't be beat, and they allow you to try on the costumes which I thought was a plus. A vast cavern of costumes and party gear overwhelmed me. At first I didn't see any employees, but found one who was very helpful and appropriately accessorized with a ouija board bracelet. I successfully emerged with pin the tail on the donkey. Though they have a ton of merchandise things are organized. Its worth a visit if only to see the huge sculptural displays. I like the mask I got and the service but the problem is I open up the new packaging and the mask had white scuffs on it. I paid 26$ for the mask so I expected it to be in new perfect condition. When I hit one star, it replies "eek, me thinks not". And that sure is right. I arrived to pick up 20 balloons, and ended up getting yelled at by the OWNER. Because "they were so busy", meanwhile there were ten people meandering around the huge store needing no attention, three managers, and a cashier lady doing the balloons phone and cash register. The owner yelled at her to ring someone up when she was doing my balloons, when he could have walked his lazy self over and done it himself. I convinced people in line behind me not to get balloons there, but the cash lady was so nice so I told them it would be safe. I spoke with a manager about his rash and rude attitude, and unfortunately I think he will never hear about it, so I hope he reads this. I will never ever be back, and strongly advocate against going here. read more
