We ordered a cocktail and she informed us that they either didn't renew their liquor license or lost their liquor license. My partner and I decided to try this place for an early dinner. The sign when we walked in said to seat ourselves so we did. There were only a couple of other occupied tables at the time. It took awhile before someone finally came to our table. We ordered the crab rangoons after reading other reviews stating they were great. We also shared 3 rolls. The crab rangoons were just okay. They weren't the best I've had. They came with a chili like dipping sauce though that was very tasty. The menu had photos of most of the rolls on it so I really liked that. When the rolls arrived at our table, they looked like the photos in the menus but much blander. For example, the salmon on top of one looked nice and pink on the menu but was pale in person and the seaweed paper in the photos looked green (as expected) but was yellow in person. This isn't a big deal, but it did make me wonder how fresh the ingredients were that day. The salmon did taste a little fishier than I like. The ambiance is family friendly and there are tables for small and large groups. It is kind of dark inside and the building was old, but it seemed clean enough. I did not visit the restrooms. As we were ending our meal, several more groups of people were coming in. Our server only came back to our table once to refill water once the glass was completly empty. Well coming to visit a friend in Galesburg and hearing rave reviews about this Japanese restaurant well it was good Japanese food BUT the server was very rude. I had inquiries on certain dishes on the menu but the waiter or male server has No interest. I found that very rude He didn't even bring water to dining in with my friend and his father as a guests. I ended up giving less on gratituity than the 15 or 12 perfect of the check or bill. Other than that I have been to better Japanese restaurants outside my big city of Chicago and unfortunately I never experienced such poor inattentive service! They also had limited tempura dishes I was trying to ask my server. They really need to improve on their service. If I come back I will try the other Japanese restaurant in Galesburg but not sure if I have the likes to come back here? As for the dishes I ordered they were mediocre but not bad. They are not even true hibachi since they didn't have an iron grill set up to serve people like Benihana or Ron of Japan that I know. The shrimp tempura was also ok but nothing special to give them a wow review that adds to poor service. read more

Very good food and presentation. We used to have to drive to Peoria to get decent sushi but Masa will save us a 40 min drive. We like it a lot better than the other place in town that just opened up. They have decent lunch specials and some very tasty specialty rolls. Both times I've been there I've had good service... No complaints here! This was a stop in, fresh off the Amtrak for an adventure trip during the Labor Day weekend. I stumbled on Masa out of curiosity while walking and discovering. My entree was chicken and broccoli, which was very good. The sauce was delicious and complimented the meat and crisp broccoli. It was a big helping too. Appetizers: the calamari and vegetable tempura were top notch. Big portions. The salad that came with lunch was good - the dressing I can best describe as a sweet thousand island/ginger flavor. I had the teriyaki steak bento box dinner. I've never had shumai before and they were delectable - kind of like a slightly sweet tator tot. The California roll was terrific. The teriyaki sauce on the steak was the best I've had in a long time. I ordered the steak "medium" and it was definitely rare/medium rare, but I didn't complain because I actually prefer medium-rare, but order steaks medium because restaurants usually undercook steaks. The steak was very flavorful and tender. The fried rice was nothing to write home about. All the portions were just right. My hubby had the hibachi vegetables with teriyaki salmon. He really enjoyed them both. Nicely done. For dessert, we tried the green tea mochi. It was like nothing we've ever had and it was phenomenal. Don't pass it up! The only food that was just "ok" was the mushroom broth that came with the meals. Service was friendly but a bit slow considering the restaurant wasn't too busy at 1 pm on a Saturday. Prices were very reasonable, if not on the inexpensive side for the excellent quality. We will definitely return many times! I'll be getting the vegetable tempura ($6) for lunch again soon. The chicken hibachi was basically just boiled chicken with a little sauce on top & the broccoli was hardly cooked. The crab ragoons were very good though! This was just not the quality that I'm used to having. read more

This place is outstanding! Came here with my brother on whim. I didn't even know there was a sushi place in town. The staff is super friendly, and the chef did an awesome job preparing our food. It looked really good and tasted even better. Also the best miso soup ever! 10/10. read more

My girlfriend and I have been here two times now, and both were extremely disappointing. The first time we were required to order in cheap so we assumed that, because we bought cheap, the food quality was lower. This review will be over the second time we visited. So we walked in and were not greeted or sat down by a server for a few minutes despite the almost empty restaurant. We left for around 20 minutes and came back where we were sat down at a table and got our orders in no problem. I ordered the beef broccoli and my girlfriend ordered the Chicago and Crunchy roll. The beef brocolis tasted somewhat synthetic, not like real beef, and was fairly tough. The Crunchy roll had a strange aftertaste and made me gag immediately when attempting to eat it, almost like off flavored vegetables and quite salty. The Chicago roll was overpoweringly full of cream cheese and nothing else, and was overall dissatisfactory. We then waited for 30 minutes to receive a check, or our server to return with no avail. Finally after waiting, a different server approached our table and gave us our checks without asking us if we'd like anything in addition or how the quality of the food was. The servers themselves are extremely soft spoken and are difficult to both hear and find when needed, disappearing for long stretches of time. We spent $38 on a dissatisfactory, disappointing dinner and we will not be returning. I made this yelp account solely because this restaurant was so disappointing, I would not recommend going here to eat. read more

The food and service here were incredible. We had the shrimp tempura and salmon teriyaki bento boxes and they were fabulous and filling (great portion sizes)! Our Bento boxes came with our entree, fritters, fried rice, 6 pieces of sushi, miso soup, and a salad!!! And it gets better!!!! Each bento box was only $15!!!! Wowza!!! Love this place. read more

I've been here before and it was pretty good for being a sushi restaurant in a smaller Midwest town. This last time I went here was a little bit of a different story though. They seemed to be busy which isn't a big deal except it seemed they were very behind because of it. The food seemed bland and rushed. The mushroom soup had minimal mushrooms in it (not even half of one) and the broth tasted like lightly salted water. It was practically clear. Then I ordered Udon noodle soup because it is my favorite and I have had it there before. After about 25 minutes of waiting they finally brought me yaki udon which is not the same. I decided to not say anything because I was very hungry at this point. So I ate the yaki udon but was upset to find out that there was more onion that udon noodles in the dish. I don't know about you but mouth full after mouth full of onion isn't ideal. Finally after all of that to top it all off the fried ice cream was freezer burned. The moral of the story is to go at lunchtime when they are less busy and it seems that they pay more attention to detail and the food is a lot better. I am a fan of this restaurant and I was just disappointed at my last experience here. read more
