Le Mignon - It's a small restaurant, don't miss it!

This small Frech restaurant tucked away on a side street in Utrecht has become my favorite place to…read morego for a special or celebratory meal. It's a small restaurant that seats maybe 15-20, so definitely call ahead for a reservation. I've been four times, and only once has there been a waitress serving diners. All of the other occasions the kind chef-owner was the one who did everything. It's so nice to see him in the kitchen preparing and cooking each individual order. The menu is small, usually a choice of out of three starters, three main courses, and a choice of two desserts or cheese platter. Dishes can be ordered individually, but I prefer the prix-fixe option. The menu changes occasionally, but some of my favorite dishes include the escargo, the duck breast with a caramel coriander sauce (omg so good), the lamb shank. I also had what was probably the best cheesecake of my life here, though with that said I've not been disappointed with any of their desserts. The mango tiramisu was another standout option. I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough. Everything is delicious and prepared with such attention to detail that it wows me each time. The owner is incredibly gracious and a true master of his craft.

Had the most extraordinary french meal at this quaint, 12yr old restaurant. A true gem of Utrecht…read more Our group all ordered the prix-fixe menu (reasonably priced at 32E) also given a wonderful wine recommendation by the gentle, attentive owner. Take your date out, or step up your dinner game. Whatever the occasion, this is one to add to the checklist. (Pro-tip: the restaurant is rather small, call or make reservations in advance.) For our first course we had a wonderfully cured, smoked salmon with a creamy salad of bay shrimp. Venison was the main course; perfectly seared over a bed of roasted potatoes and garnished with a refreshing celery root puree. Rounded off by the most divine dessert (we had a choice between a mango sorbet but who can resist warm profiteroles sandwiching vanilla ice cream AND doused in rich chocolate sauce??). Plus they didn't even have to make us choose between rich chocolate sauce or creamy caramel..you get the best of both worlds! What an epiphany. Dreaming of my next visit.

The waitress was very friendly and accommodating, and asked more than once whether or not we had allergies within our group. High quality and conscious food!

This is a lovely dining spot, with outdoor seating under the trees, so even at the height of…read moresummer, it was comfortable. There were eight of us, and the restaurant acomodated every request, from allergy issues to a sudden addition to our party. The food was, indeed, excellent, and once we'd explained that we wanted some fish or other protein with the vegetables, it was no problem. There's also a plant store attached, and wonderful displays of plants and small trees. I particularly liked the mandarin oranges growing in a large pot along the walkway into the indoor portion of the restaurant. If I had one quarrel, it would be that all the food was a bit "precious". I don't know how to explain it better than that. Perhaps they're hoping for a Michelin rating? It looked lovely, it tasted fine, but it was not extraordinary - just good. And, it was quite expensive - for a party of eight, at lunch, with no liquor, the basic menu, cost was well over 300 EU. I'm sorry but that seems like quite a bit for a 3 course meal that was almost all vegetables, no matter how beautiful or well harvested. And as much as I understand eating slowly, enjoying the company, we all felt three hours was a bit long for a lunch. To be fair, about 45 minutes of that was us deciding on menus, and later, enjoying our coffee, but service is really, really, slow!

The restaurant is nice and cozy with comfortable seating and we were just next to the kitchen as I made a last minute change to the booking. The service started off quickly but was very inconsistent throughout the evening. There was the "upsell lady" who only came to your table to try and get you to order something extra and then disappeared until the next time. We opted for the four course surprise menu and I am glad, as three would have been too little. I still ended up leaving slightly hungry by the end as the restaurant was very stingy with the bread. We were given one small roll when we arrived and nothing more for the rest of the evening. When you have gaps between courses it is always nice to have some bread. The wine list is nice and we had a nice red that was reasonably priced. We also had a well priced Eisweine to end the evening. The first course of smoked salmon and tahini was pretty ordinary but the fish and venison course was nice. The dessert was also very nice and well executed. There was a huge gap between the first and second course and it was a two hour timeline to get a four course meal served which is too long in my opinion. The place was busy but when you offer a surprise menu then you need to prepare the execution accordingly. It's a fairly expensive place but I enjoyed my meal. I would come back here again.
