I left it a little late to try to book my deal goodies in, but a short and friendly phone call later, I was assured a next-day pick-up would be absolutely fine. The girls at Camp Hill were such a delight to deal with, and I really wanted to try a little bit of everything in the front cabinet... and the bread racks. My order was all ready to go, and I had to struggle to choose just two breads from the shelves as part of the voucher. I ended up getting a spelt loaf and a pumpkin & blue vein loaf. You did not misread. Yum! I got them both in freezer bags, but if you're going to eat them fresh, Rock 'n' Roll put them in a paper bag instead (it's better for the bread). I got so excited about the breads, I almost forgot about the other parts of the order - a family-size lamb & rosemary pie, and a gluten free orange & almond cake. The cake is moist and full of flavour (I do admit to Cheesecake Regret when I saw the beautiful lime cheesecakes in the cabinet, despite not having that as an option with my voucher). The lamb & rosemary pie? Absolutely delicious. Big chunks of tender lamb in a creamy sauce. I'm not going to lie to you - I've had it for four of my six meals of the last two days, and I might cry when it's gone. Or I might just go buy another one... and one of those sweet potato & onion loaves, while I'm there.

There are a wide range of tasty and beautiful cupcakes to take away or eat in with a coffee and have a chat with friends. My favourite is the gluten free red velvet and you would never know that it is gluten free. Never fear they also have full gluten cupcakes if that is what you prefer. Every time I have bought some of these they are a talking point at the get together. They are a good size so perhaps get two different one's and split them with your friend or date and you will get to try more. Simply Delicious.

Not having many pennies in my pocket at the time, we decided on what seemed like a quiet little bakery. Monticlare is down the end of 68 Racecourse Rd. With a few plastic seats outside and a very relaxed and casual atmosphere, it felt like the kind of place where I could get a cheap feed. The Bakery had a nice array of breads, croissants, cakes, cupcakes, sandwiches, and pies. The lady serving was lovely and attentive but I felt bad that I had to ask her to repeat the pie flavours because I could not quite understand what she was saying through her thick accent. The pie was the not he best I have ever had but definitely affordable and adequate. Sitting outside, I was pestered by a magpie who obviously intimidates enough customers there to be fed regularly enough. Overall, this was a nice enough bakery.

They also look like their freshly made in house because of their shape and lovely buttery colour. On this day I just wanted the old plain mince pie. What I learned about Monticlair Bakery is that they've been at this business for years and the recipes haven't changed. You need to bit patient with the lady on the counter. Not because she's rude, actually I have nothing bad to say about her. Its just her accent is so heavy it filters most English pronunciations out. Trust me when I say she wants to make sure she's getting your order right. So after a few minutes, I strolled away eating into a pie that has been the same since Monticlaire opened. I hope nothing changes. That is all.

The tired old place got a facelift but no legacy treasure was lost; the average bread made way for a great range of breads, pastries, cakes and hot savouries. The pies are really good - especially the steak and tomato, which my firend has regularly when he needs to eat lunch on the run. Best of all for those allergic to bakeries, these dudes make a really goood range of gluten free breads and cakes. They keep some range on the shop floor, or you can order ahead. Gluten free seedy loaves start at about $5.00.

When my friends and I got our licenses, we'd drive around the back streets of Kedron to eventually end up at our ol' faithful, Baked (as we liked to call it). They used to have more pies than they do now, but the ones they do have are fine little pastry delights. I personally like to lift off the lid with a fork and scoop out the meat in the pie dish. It's the best. They've got steak, pepper steak, steak and kidney, steak and cheese and others. They're all $4. Outside of the pies, Baked to Perfection also put out some sweet candy pastries. You can find old favourites like meringue and neenish tarts here. Even though there might not be as big a range as there used to be, still drop into Baked for a pie. They really are something else.
