Specialties
Maryland Systema offers a practical approach to adult self-defense that goes beyond memorizing fixed responses. Students learn how to move naturally, manage pressure, maintain balance, stay aware of their surroundings, and make sound decisions during unpredictable situations.
Training includes strikes, grabs, physical restraint, close-range contact, multiple attackers, confined spaces, ground movement, and threats involving weapons. We increase pressure gradually so students can learn safely while working with realistic movement and resistance.
Our classes are designed for adults, including complete beginners and people with physical limitations. There are no competitions, choreographed routines, or long-term contracts. Students can attend classes in Rockville and Takoma Park, and the first group class is free.
History
Established in 2017.
Maryland Systema was founded in 2017 to provide adults in the Washington, DC area with practical, accessible self-defense training. Founder and Chief Instructor Jim Eglin built the program after years of training in Systema and other martial arts, including Krav Maga, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, and boxing.
Jim earned his Full Instructor Certification in 2019 and renewed his certification in 2022 and 2024. Over the years, Maryland Systema has grown from a small training group into an established adult self-defense program offering group classes, private lessons, and specialized seminars.
Today, Maryland Systema holds classes in Rockville and Takoma Park and continues to focus on helping adults improve movement, awareness, balance, and their ability to remain calm under pressure.
