I was out in Martinsville Virginia at the Speedway last week for the Cookout 400 which is part of the NASCAR Cup Series. It was a work related trip of sorts and it was my first time at a NASCAR race. It won't be the last since the company I work for has three more the rest of the year (Nashville, Talladega and Daytona). I'm looking forward to it and I'll review those tracks after I visit. The track itself is one of the oldest and shortest on the circuit. It's nestled on a hilly stretch off 220 (Greensboro Rd) on the south side of town. Surprisingly it was fairly easy to get in and out of the parking lot before and after the race. The Sherriff's Deputies and Virginia State Troopers kept traffic moving. I was able to go down to Pit Row which was fantastic. I was able to see what takes place behind the scenes and it's fascinating. I literally had a blast. The food options here are akin to your typical state fair menu. Corn Dogs, Burgers, Fried Chicken, Buckets of Fries, etc etc.. They have the "famous" Martinsville hot dog. I didn't partake in any of that because my company had a suite and food was provided there. Plus, I'm on a keto based diet so all of that kind of food is a "no no" right now. Maybe next time. Overall it was a great experience. The track and stands are nice and the people were great. If you're a race fan this may be on your list of tracks to visit. Y'all will have a good time. read more

Went to the Spring NASCAR race. First time at this track. I have to admit - they did a great job with crowd control, traffic, etc. It was easy to get in and out and everything was well marked. The restrooms (including the portable toilets in the parking areas) were serviced frequently so they were pretty clean. They offered golf cart "ADA" rides anyone needing a lift to/from parking and the track. The vendor food was ridiculously expensive but that's no surprise. For the events - no seat was a bad one. I would definitely go to this venue again! read more

Such a great weekend at a great event!! The changes to the gate entrance are spectacular. Big open area and plenty of room for pics. We sat in turn 3/4 and we are moving our seats next year. The food lines are wayyyy too long and it's just not well serviced. Plus those grandstands are too far from the s/f line and you can't see the pits. Going to try something new next year. read more

October 2022 update (nine years since my last visit). The Martinsville race is now the final Cup race to qualify for the Cup Finals in Phoenix. Entry into the parking lot was easy and parking was free. Easy that is - if you arrive quite early before the scheduled start time. I parked at 7:15 am for the 2 pm race start. The midway is open for several hours before the race and had a good variety of free activities for the fans. This year the free activities included a Ferris wheel, several sponsor booths with free swag, the always popular driver merchandise trailers, and the famous Martinsville Hot Dog Stands. Entry into the seats went very well for a large crowd that had to be wanded and have bags checked as you entered the grandstands. The only real change from my last visit was the traffic snafu as fans left the track. Nine years ago I complimented the track on how well it handled the traffic. This time the traffic exiting the property and onto the area highways was terrible. It took me over an hour before I cleared the Ridgeway VA traffic snarl and was able to continue the trip at a reasonable speed. read more

Handicap Parking The speedway website advises to have your handicap placard clearly visible on entry which we did. We stopped to ask a traffic control person where handicap parking was. He did not know. He had us do a u-turn and told us to park at the next right parking area. That was employee parking, of course we were ran out. That attendant told us to cross the road and turn right where the attendant in green vest was . We did and were promptly turned out as that was VIP parking. We proceeded on and finally saw signs indicating ADA Parking. After parking we had a short walk to shuttle stand. Jest of this, too many parking employees had no knowledge of parking areas or were simply moving their problem on to someone else without regard to the customer. Pre-race ticket, not worth $35 to stand on the track for view easily see from stands. Entry to stands Tickets were purchased online, waiting in line to have tickets scanned and backpack searched was fairly short. Sitting Seats were numbered without any type marking to indicate seat position, which would not have been a problem except for the 5 or 6 350 pound plus people in our row which left us squashed together very uncomfortable. Someone or multiple chose to smoke pot off and on during the entire race. Never saw who it was but definitely smelled it as did the people around us. Famous Hotdog Once and done. Local JROTC ran the hotdog stand behind section M in Blue Ridge Tower. They did not take cards and had no change. My all the way hotdog had one teaspoon of chili right in the middle, the dog was not fully cooked. Nasty at best. I guess the kids had no training. Air show The pre race parachutists followed by antique planes was awesome. It was the best part of the entire experience. Race Good view of track from our seats Fairly boring race. Happy for HMR 40th anniversary but the race was BORING. read more

I'm a long time (40+ years) fan of motocross and Supercross racing and growing up in Indiana led me to being a fan of the Indianapolis 500. But, I've never had the opportunity to attend a NASCAR race so the October 2022 weekend was my first. This is the smallest track on the nascar circuit at .54 mile oval, but the atmosphere and viewing is incredible. I was blessed at being invited and being able to watch in one of the skybox suites and boy was this awesome. The staff was fantastic and everything was just awesome. The track was easy to navigate and I always felt safe and secure no matter where we were, including the furthest corner of a parking lot at night. The vendors are well placed around the track and there is no shortage of food and souvenir vendors to grab yourself a shirt, hat or other memorabilia. I throughly enjoyed the weekend and to note, this was the weekend of the famous pass that Ross Chastian made from 10th to 4th in the last turn. It was incredible to watch that in person! I hope to come back again next year. Enjoy! read more

Worst track I've ever been to. Stood in line for an hour to get in, stood in line for the entire 2nd stage to get water... that they ran out of so had to get a lemonade or soda which I don't drink. There's no excuse for running out of water. The seats do not leave any legroom, worse than a plane. The guy behind me kept kicking me in the butt no matter how hard I stared him down. Parking stinks. Nascar, shame on you for creating such a bad car. read more

I've been to several tracks on many different racing circuits, and Martinsville is by far my favorite facility. The staff are incredible and if you have any issues they will go out of their way to resolve them. The facility is easy to access, navigate, and get out of when the race is over. Bathrooms are cleaner than those at many other major sporting events, and there are concessions everywhere. Protip: $2 hot dogs, and they're freakin' AMAZING. read more

Had an ok time at the track the camping area was a little mudie and we got stuck the track does nothing to modify this area to prevent this from acureng no gravel no one around to help you get out and after the checker flag they hold all traffic up for 45 min to let out there money people. So the track was nice enough to send a tractor over to pull us out and charged 75.00 I do not recommend camping here and Nascar can't figure out why the gate sales are low. read more

I've been going to every Spring and Fall race since '01, and couldn't be happier with all aspects of the Speedway. The Speedway offers free parking, and it's plentiful. The only thing that may be bad about parking, it's a little slippery if it rains. That Virginia red clay can get greasy. As far as buying some souvenirs and scanners, the trailers are abundant and they are located right outside the Bill France Tower (turn 4). You don't have to walk from one end of the track to the other in order to find your favorite driver. When it comes to food, drink and entertainment before the race, you'll have no problem finding it and you won't be bored. Too many things to list, but everything is right below the souvenir trailers, right off of the Bill France Tower/turn 4. There's also plenty of food and drink in the grandstands as well. As far as you bringing in your own food and drink, you're allowed to bring what you want, as long as it is not contained in glass. NO GLASS BOTTLES. Check Martinsville's website for cooler size restrictions (14"x14"x14") Last but not least, the potty's. They have a lot of them and they are pleasingly clean, compared to some tracks that I've been to. P.S. It's a great race. A lot of beatin' and bangin' read more

This is a really nice speedway. We were between the 3rd and 4th turn, about halfway up, and we could see everything pretty clearly. The seating aisles actually have some legroom, your knees are not pushed up against the person in front of you. Parking was ok, not too far of a walk, just wished the paths were not so uneven. One thing confused me about the parking, the closed lots seemed to still have plenty of parking available, yet we were not allowed to park there and had to spend $10 in a private lot, which was ok because it benefited a school, but still... why close the lots when there are still plenty of spots open.. We rented the r.e. scanner headsets for the full experience, that was great. You can bring your own coolers, so we packed lunch and soda/beer. Check the speedway website for the size of the coolers you're allowed. Didn't try the famous Martinsville hot dog, maybe next time. Speedway staff was efficient and friendly. Our coolers and bags were checked, but in a friendly way, no intimidation. read more

The only thing I found was the the fan zone was smaller then other tracks I have been to. The sheriff deputy's had large guns they was carrying and I thought that was a little over kill read more

Went to the race this Sunday and witnessed Jeff Gordon's big win. We camped out Saturday night in one of the lots that is associated with the speedway. Nice campspot and they gave you free-reign to take up as much space as you needed. They had porta-potties spreadout, as well as an actual bathroom with showers and what-not. There were concerts and events going on through the night to keep everyone entertained. I really like this track because you can really see everything. We sat on turn 3.....great seats. Overall, great venue! Side note- The track doesnt allow glass bottles and all coolers must be soft sided. read more

My hubs and I have been to three races here so far--one in the fall and two in the spring. I remember the first time we went for the fall race years ago, the area with all the souvenir trailers was still in the grass. And as another Yelper said, that VA red clay was greasy! Since then, they've laid lotsa asphalt down and it's much easier to move around the throngs of people to find your driver's trailer. Parking is definitely abundant and free but it's in the grass and the area is hilly. Makes driving a manual transmission car tricky when you're stuck in the traffic after the race (people don't like to leave much room between bumpers when stuck in traffic). We parked in lot 10 which is an easy walk to the track; its close enough for us to buy our souvenirs and put them in the car before entering the track. There was a Buffalo Wild Wings tent outside the track that caught my hubs' attention, so we bought our lunch from there. They ran out of fries maybe an hour before the race started, which made me sad. We brought our own cooler full of soda and water, and stuffed our seat cushion pockets with snacks. Next time, I don't think we'll pack as much, haha. The bathrooms are okay, considering how busy they are. I think the line for the mens' was longer than the womens', haha. For once! (: There was an attendant in the bathroom that would periodically clean, which is nice. Only complaint is that there are no locks on the stall doors, so don't just randomly open one thinking it's empty! Overall, we love this track with its parking and the layout both in- and outside the track. Food is hit or miss but you can bring your own snacks. Typing up this review makes me excited for next year! read more

One of the most beautiful sporting venues in the world. If you want a thorough NASCAR race experience, you need to visit Martinsville. Even if you're not a diehard NASCAR fan, this legendary paper clip is a slice of Americana that's worth a visit. The speedway staff is amazingly friendly, and on race day, the souvenir trailers and showcars are within a stone's throw of the racetrack. There will be plenty for you to see and do. Parking around the speedway is relatively inexpensive (we parked in a lot just off 220 for $10, but you may have to walk a little ways to the track if you opt to go that route. The racing is generally good, classic short track battling. Seats are good all the way around the speedway. You can get a really detailed look at the cars and the drivers if you're sitting close the track, and you can get a great view of the whole speedway from the higher-up seats as well. The Famous Martinsville Hot Dog is worth a try, although I wouldn't say it's the best hot dog I've ever had. It certainly is unique and good in its own right, though. read more

This is my first visit to Martinsville speedway and I wasn't disappointed. I purchased seats on the NN side off of turn two and I will say these seats were better than I expected. This track is military friendly and have discounts if you are a veteran. The only dislike I have about the track is being surrounded by smokers in the crowd. I'm not against smokers being allowed to smoke but there should be a designated smoking area so that the fans that do not smoke be able to enjoy the race too. I also recommend the track have more displays for headsets, and souvenirs around the track. I had to walk all the way around the track just to get a headset/scanner for the race. It should be like Talladega super speedway where it was very convenient to get the items needed to maximize the enjoyment of the race. The track is amazing and highly recommend you come here to enjoy the race just know to get your souvenirs and headsets before you enter the track. read more

First time at the racetrack. Law enforcement did a great job of directing traffic and enjoyed the free parking which was a easy walk to the venue. So glad we rented the scanner headsets to protect our ears from the noise and to hear the race talk. The concession stands offered a good variety of items and they were very convenient to the grandstands as were the restrooms. Glad we went online before we went to check out what can be brought inside the Speedway- it's nice you can bring in your own drinks and food as long as it's in an approved cooler or backpack.
