Where else can you burst in five minutes to closing time on a Christmas Eve demanding medium-slice bread and be answered with what you asked for, as opposed to a smack in the mouth? I'm just gutted I wasn't alive in 1905, when the building was used as a 'chronometer manufactory'. What the hell do either of those two words mean? Answers on a postcard.

They also stock roots and world music CDs and have a notice-board advertising community events, meetings and demonstrations. In a world that's becoming more corporate and generic by the minute, News From Nowhere offers genuine and life-affirming food for thought.

The staff really helpful and knowledgeable about what they stock - which makes a change, as so many of the big chain bookshops don't have a clue. I recommend checking out the website as you can also order from there, but then you miss out on the dusty smell of the shop. It appeals a lot more to the average consumer now with a wider range of popular goods. There's all sorts of little pieces such as some funky postcards.

Watergate news is a very handy newsagents for those working around Chester city centre. It is…read moreuseful for emergency chocolate supplies, and obviously sells papers and cigarettes as well as a selection of magazines. There is a card section to one side which is good if you need to get a greetings card at short notice. Because of the strange shape of the shop (something of a Chester speciality) it is quite difficult to joint the queue or to get to the papers. The queue is not usually more than 4 deep though, and if you don't want cigarettes then you can often be served at the additional till by the door. It is accessible via two large steps so it isnt very wheelchair friendly.

The Waverley is one of the last honest newsagents in the Wirral as far as I'm concerned. In an age…read morewhere supermarkets and convenience stores are taking everything away from small businesses, the Waverley has battled through and is still a very popular shop within West Kirby and Hoylake. This is because of the level of service given to customers and the dedication of the shop owners for good quality and service. Not only do they stock a range of newspapers, magazines and traditional confectionary, they also specialise in wine and chocolate. In fact, friends have said that the owner is a wine expert and at least two of them have gone to seek his advice when needing wine for a special occasion and when buying for somebody who knows their wine! I've always had very pleasant experiences here and would recommend buying from here over any supermarket!
