Unfortunately for Dr Mass, you are only as strong as your weakest link. I had a medical emergency this week, and Dr Mass has been registered as my PCP for 1.5 years though I had never needed to see him. I called to make an appt and was told by the male receptionist he couldn't see new patients until the end of the month. When I told him I couldn't wait that long, there was silence. Then what I asked what my alternatives were, he told me to find a new doctor. Thanks very much, rude male receptionist. I think I will, and I'm sure I'll be better off for doing so! read more

I really wanted to believe that I would have an experience like these four or five star reviews, as Dr. Mass' office is close to where I live. Unfortunately, a lot of negative stuff said here is true. He was weirdly cynical and condescending, rudely dismissing some of my concerns. In some cases he actually laughed at me. Huh? He certainly did not make me feel welcome or cared for. On top of all this, I had to wait an hour and a half to see him. If you think this is normal, you're seeing the wrong doctor. I've never had to wait that long. Additionally, I was given no indication that this sort of delay is out of the ordinary for his office. Anyway, this guy gave me some bad vibes. I left the office feeling hurt and insulted... I guess the hunt for a good PCP continues :( read more

My experience with Dr. Mass was punctuated by condescension, scoffing, and disregard. I was hunting for a PCP and went based on all these reviews...and was very disappointed. When he asked me for my medical history and list of concerns, I went into my story -- it's intricate but I was concise -- and at points he scoffed and rolled his eyes. I also saw his covering doctor once when Mass was on vacation, and he didn't really do or say anything of value. My partner [male] had a mild experience; he said that Dr. Mass was not condescending to him at all. The young guy at the front desk always was the light at the end [beginning?] of the tunnel in the office. I'm not sure if this experience with Dr. Mass was because I'm a woman, because I have an annoying health record, or because he just didn't like me...but whatever it was, I know that I will not be going back. Walking out of my doctor's office feeling like a burden is NOT what I want. read more

Yet again, Dr. Mass (and now his receptionist, Jerry) show their true colors. When I changed my PCP, I proactively requested a copy of my medical records from Dr. Mass's office only to be told that I would have to pay $25 to have them copied, but if my new PCP asks for them, they are provided for free. Nice to know Dr. Mass still finds a way to screw his ex-patients. Not to let this be his last insult, I discovered that Dr. Mass coded my last office visit in February as a "yearly checkup" versus the simple office visit I received. My new PCP's initial patient intake and checkup, in turn, was denied by my insurance company as a result. Dr. Mass did not perform a check up on me in any way whatsoever except to check my vitals and suggest I get a tetanus shot. He also requested blood work, a chest x-ray and a stool sample test. As I stated in my previous review, rather than perform the yearly checkup, Dr. Mass typed into his iPad for the 15 minutes I was there and asked me the same questions such as allergies, past medical history, etc., I had answered during my first visit some six or so years ago. It seems his office is leaving the dark ages and finally going digital. Laughably, he still uses an @aol.com email address. As a result of the insurance discovery, I twice asked Dr. Mass to change his coding for the annual checkup to an office visit. He has, so far, ignored my requests. This would, I imagine, mean that he would receive less money from my insurance company, and as you can imagine, Dr. Mass has apparently declined. When I told Jerry, his office manager/receptionist, that I would be reporting his unethical behavior to the state licensing board, he kindly replied, "Fu@k you!" How professional. He cited my horrible review on yelp and defended Dr. Mass by saying, "people also write good reviews, too!" Anyway, good luck to current and future patients. Perhaps Dr. Mass (and his office troll) have learned something from this situation. My bet is they have not... read more

All the staff who work in this office are very cool. From the front office folks (especially Jerry) to the PA's, nurses, and of course the good Dr. himself. I have always been made to feel very comfortable, and treated with complete respect for the 4 years I've been coming here. Example? Recently I had to have some stiches removed (which was a first for me) and I was being a fairly big baby about the anticipated pain factor. The office RN was completely patient and kind to me throughout my pre-stich removal mini freak out. Really the only thing that hurt about the whole experience was maybe my pride. As the proud owner of several tattoos and the recipient of laser hair removal, I should have been down to have my stiches removed with the RN"s teeth. Alas I have learned thanks to the Dr. Mass crew. read more

Awesome doctor! Very personable and kind. All of the patients (and their families) loved him. His office staff is great, too. Especially Jerry, the office manager - really good guy. Dr. Mass is a great doctor in the sense that he truly tests you and asks you questions to discerne the best treatment for your life. Dr. Mass is a great PCP. He takes the time to listen to all my hypochondriacal worries, and treats them with a soothing mix of 'taking-this-seriously' and 'you-probably-have-nothing-to-worry-about'. Plus, he's the first primary care doctor I've had in a long time who really gives the impression that he pays attention to my health history and concerns, and remembers them from visit to visit. The posters in his office are pretty rockin', too. read more

I have been going to Dr Mass since 2001. I like Dr Mass' candor. It's dry, and sometimes you have to probe him to fully understand his thoughts. But that's a doctor. Good luck, finding a Doctor you are happy with is hard. read more

Been with the dude for 10 years! The one medical team adds some nice options that I didn't have when he was in his own office. But as always....Martin Mass was reaching out to me 2000 miles away from his home, (I'm in Houston) to ensure my health is optimal during a little medical crisis that came around this week! Martin Mass is my doctor! He has even given me those disapproving eyes before! Sooo yah, at the end of the day he's human each and every moment he takes a breath so perfect he may not be! But a damn fine physician he certainly is. That man genuinely cares that his patients are healthy. Thanks Dr. Mass! read more

I shopped around for a Primary Care Physician for a while. This one rules. As a general rule, when shopping for a primary care doctor, do it while perfectly healthy, so that you can wait. Once you have become a patient, they can always get you in to a competent doctor the day you need it. So sorry for those who had to wait--but any good doctor has a wait to become a patient, much like many good places to eat, where probably need to make a reservation a week in advance. Dr. Mass is cool, professional, never rushes me, asks me questions to help figure out what is going on, and always is really helpful. read more

I have been saying Dr. Mass for over ten years. I guess that tells you how I feel about him. I find him very caring and a good listener. I can be a little neurotic when it comes to be my health and he always hears me out. Whenever I need a prescription refilled, Jerry takes care of it within a day. I've had Dr. Mass call me several times in the evening. One a few occasions, he had to call me twice because I missed his call It's rare these days that you get the attention of a doctor for more than five minutes. Dr. Mass inflicted incredible harm on me 14 years ago. And this month a close friend had to suffer intolerable pain and debilitation in the final weeks of his struggle with Parkinson's Disease because his physician, Dr. Mass, would not authorize his entering a hospice for comfort care. I was severely injured and spent a Saturday in the emergency room and had outpatient surgery. Upon discharge they gave me sufficient pain medication to last until Monday, when they said I should see Dr. Mass for an urgent appointment and a new RX for pain medication until my recovery. He refused that request from the hospital ER, and told me to wait until he returns from vacation in 3 weeks. I begged for help as I could not tolerate the excruciating pain. He ignored my request - - even when I asked for a referral to another doctor during his vacation. To me he is the most unsympathetic and callous person I ever met in the medical field. I can't understand how anyone could be so harsh and negligent in not mitigating the pain for both me and my dying friend. And I experienced the same condescending and dismissive attitude from him that other reviewers have cited. I am fearful that others might also be humiliated, endure unnecessary pain, and not be given adequate care. The new doctor I sought said that valuable time had been lost in not prescribing physical therapy at the very beginning. read more

I wouldn't trust this guy with my life. I went to Dr. Mass with a problem I was having - repeated pain - and to have a regular physical. When I was in the room with him, I thought "wow, this guy knows his stuff," but upon reflection I realized that my positive thought about him had to do with the fact that he made me feel so stupid while he was examining me that I started to doubt myself and, as a result, trust him. After thinking about it, talking to my friends (because the experience was actually quite upsetting), and discussing this with two other doctors I trust, I realized that several things didn't sit well with me: 1) He was condescending. Very condescending. He seems very logical, but his bedside manner is awful and he calls into question your own knowledge and even your personality. 2) I brought all the lab slips from my other doctors in for my physical just so I could have one lab slip and get all of my blood work done at once. These were perfectly normal requests from my doctors - one slip from my annual GYN visit, another from a doctor (a specialist) who wanted a baseline reading on certain blood chemistry things because she'd prescribed some medication that can have pretty serious side effects and she needs to do periodic blood work to make sure the medication doesn't affect me negatively. Dr. Mass questioned the tests that my doctors ordered. To paraphrase: "I don't understand why these doctors are asking for these tests. Some of these tests are the latest fad, others just don't make sense. Your doctors are ordering things you don't need." I found this to be quite odd, given that my GYN who I've seen for a couple of years (and who is fantastic!) doesn't do anything out of the ordinary or that is inconsistent with the GYNs I've seen over my lifetime: Annual exam = regular preventative STD screening. He told me she was being overly cautious, and that he wasn't ordering one of the tests she'd requested and that I should "just trust him on this." As far as the specialist was concerned, he admitted that he doesn't prescribe the medication at hand, so he knows little about it, but yammered on for some time about not understanding, and therefore not agreeing with, the tests she ordered. He did, however, put these tests on the lab slip. He proceeded to give me inaccurate information about STDs and told me that he didn't understand how I couldn't know this information. He told me that a certain STD test didn't need to be done because it wasn't a big deal, that condoms work and that if it came back positive it was a big deal and I would have to inform people that I was sexually active with that I was positive. Um...no sh*t. Of course I'd inform potential partners if I had an STD. I told him things that other doctors had told me and he said they weren't true and questioned my memory. I subsequently called my GYN's office to discuss what he'd told me. I spoke to a doctor other than my own and she more or less said that it sounded (based on what I relayed) that the last time he'd had sex ed was in the 50s. She proceeded to tell me exactly why they ordered each and every test they'd ordered - all of which, she confirmed, were part of the standard STD panel EVERYONE undergoes as a part of their yearly. Then she explained that the information I'd relayed to him was quite correct. She strongly encouraged me never to see Dr. Mass again, and suggested that I might give him some of the material she was sending me via mail. I spoke to my specialist doctor (mentioned above) who encouraged me to file an official complaint with the medical board. 3) He asked inappropriate questions: a. Why would you travel to x city to see this specialist. Um...because she's the best at what she does. b. How do you not know this information? This was said re: the incorrect STD info he gave me. c. Are you the type of person who likes to get unnecessary tests done for no good reason? WHAT??? These are tests my doctors of years have ordered. I am in no way a person who seeks attention from doctors. By the time he was done belittling me, I started to question whether I even needed to explore the problem I'd come in for. When I told him we didn't need to go over it if he thought it was unnecessary, he then made a big deal about it, explained what he thought would need to be done about it, and then seemed frustrated with my questions about his advice. This visit ended up with me in tears. After I started crying, he stopped asking me a lot of questions, told me to put on my shoes and meet him up front because we were out of time. As we were walking out the door he told me not to worry, that we'd get through these things. He did take an awful long time to go over my medical history so I'll give him one star for that. read more

I really wanted to like Dr. Mass as I got an appt within one day. However, after requesting to have the dr call me regarding my test results I was told that my results were normal and the dr would not be contacting me. I can't believe how accurate some of the negative reviews are. I thought I was alone in having a very frustrating experience. Dr. Mass was condescending, patronizing, impatient when I told him my health history, and he scoffed at me when I mentioned that his receptionist was rude to me. He insisted it was my problem because he had never had any other complaints about his receptionist. I left wondering if the office culture is more hostile to women than men. Dr. Mass wasn't compassionate or interested in hearing me at all. read more

Dr. Mass is the worst doctor I have ever experienced. On my first visit he was late. He took very little interest in what I had to say and of my concerns about my health. He was very condescending at times and other times I felt as though he was just making fun of what I was saying. And when I did not make a follow up appointment as fast as he thought I should he called and left a message that he would not refill any other prescriptions for me until I came back. It was a couple of meds that I needed and to be threatened to be cut off just like that was not only unprofessional but possibly illegal. He is a jerk and needs to retire. And after my nightmarish experience with him I was told by several other friends that they experienced similar things with him. I hope I never meet anyone like him again. read more

I have been going to Martin Mass since 1978. I began seeing him when I lived in the City years ago, but moved to the Central Valley for my job. 38 years with the same Dr, he is awesome!! His staff is friendly and courteous, actually more like close friends than office staff. I have never seen anything like what some of these reviews (one or two star) have written. I know the LGBT community pretty well, (Team leader to the top Aids Walk Team for nearly 10 years) and we can be pretty vindictive when we get slighted in some little way, so I have to go with my gut feeling that these individuals are bitter individuals that will never be happy with any Doctor, and probably any person. Additionally, where does anyone get that kind of time to write an encyclopedia on an office visit. Wikipedia wouldn't even have that kind of room online. Thanks Martin, Jerry, and Chris for the best service EVER. read more

I was originally referred to Dr. Mass by my old doctor, and like a reasonable person was skeptical after reading some of the reviews here on Yelp. I've been to his office a half dozen times now or so in the last year and have been nothing but impressed with him and his office staff. Additionally they create an environment where its actually fun to go see them, you always feel very well recieved in the office and like you matter as a patient. In response to other reviews, I will grant you that if you are by nature a very serious person who prefers a doctor with a very dry personality, you might find Dr. Mass a little tongue and cheek, but for me thats a selling point, I'm perfectly comfortable laughing at myself and approaching illness with a mild sense of humor and Dr. Mass has always been honest, straight forward, but not afraid to give you the look of, "come on you know better than that". I think he's hillarious, but more importantly, he's always fixed me up right (I've had some fairly non-standard issues, and he's been right on it every time). He will talk to you like the two of you are consuting together, he has always been on the level explaining his thoughts and what competing ideas might be, and very good at explaining things when there is a gap in knowledge. That's all I can ask for from a PCP. I highly recommend him. read more

I was terrified after reading these reviews...most of them are either 5 stars or 1 star- which scared me. Especially after reading some of the accusations that the good reviews were planted by the office itself. I couldn't figure out why so many people would comment on the staff, rather than just review the doctor. Dr. Mass was assigned to me through the Healthy SF program, so I felt stuck regardless of whether my assessment would fall into the 1 star or 5 star category. I've been to see him twice now, and I'm certainly not terrified anymore. I let myself get psyched out by reading all these reviews and I wish I wouldn't have done that. I agree with the review just before mine that dr. mass may have a sort of dry sense of humor and can give you the, "you know better than that" look. I think it's because he treats you like youre a human that should have a base line understanding of things (i.e. veggies are better for you than candy). I think that's also why there are so many comments about his office staff- they really work as a team and dr. mass seems to respect them. It's a tiny little office so the set- up seems to work well. I feel comfortable there, heard, and respected. Both times I have been, I had to wait for quite a while after my appointment time before I was seen (like an hour +)- they get backed up. It's a good doctor's office though and I would recommend it. read more

I think that this guy is a quack and needs to have his license revoked. He is close to my house which is why I chose him. He refused to refer me to a specialist despite chronic pain. Like the comments of others, I felt like he was the doc, so when he said "I just can't see referring you for that..." I felt put in my place. Later, when the pain kicked up again I talked to a doctor friend of mine who took a look herself. Basically she felt that it was borderline illegal not to refer someone to a specialist who is in chronic pain. There were actually test results that were not shared with me until I saw another doctor who was filling in for Dr. Mass. Staff never follows up on test results or referrals without hounding. I see a lot of good reviews, I believe those are planted by him or his staff. Beware of this doctor. read more

In short, I will be seeing Dr Mass as my primary in San Francisco. This city is extremely tough to find a doctor in. However I think I found one. He is extremely thorough and asks all the right questions. He cleared up a lot of confusion and misunderstandings fueled by precious SF doctor experiences. However, what I did not like was having a 3:15 appointment and waiting for over and hour (in the exam room) for him to come in. I thought about not starting off on the wrong foot and complaining, but had to say something when there was no apology for it. I had to completely rearrange the rest of my evening. 3:15 does not mean 4:45- no matter the excuse. Overall a good experience, just be prepared to wait. read more

I was a bit hesitant about starting here because I thought maybe Dr. Mass might be a guys doctor. My friend was the PA back then and she left a few years later for a bigger job, it was then that Dr. Mass became my PCP. I have NEVER had a problem here. There was one PA that I didn't care for but he didn't last long. Jerry, the office manager is the rock and glue, he is fantastic. Dr. Mass does have that dry sense of humor but he is a real person. I see him at the gym and he stops and speaks to me. I always feel that he gives me the time I need. When I need to get in on short notice, no problem. They have also never kept me waiting more than 5 minutes so I am sure if they do, it is because they fit and emergency in or others before you were late. read more

This is the worst Dr. I have ever been to. He questioned tests I wanted, my medical history, the list that I brought in (because I am very well educated and know exactly which referrals I want), and generally lectured me and told me we wouldn't be able to get to all the things on my list. He is seriously more interested in insurance companies than patients. After being on public health care for a long time, my first health insurance covered visit in years ended in him handing me COUPONS for medicines, NOT PRESCRIPTIONS!!!! Hilarious! I don't care about Blue Shield, Im paying them and want them to pay for stuff I need. I do not need coupons when I have insurance you Moron. He is the most condescending, outdated Dr I have ever encountered. He definitely is OLD and probably liked things better in the 50's when there was no google, patients were not able to educate themselves on medicine, and probably were used to Dr's just telling them what to do. I however, did not appreciate his attitude nor his strategy to bill for as many office appointments as possible before simply writing the prescriptions I wanted (nothing controlled or abusable by the way). He doesn't like it when people challenge his assessment and has the worst bed side manner I have ever encountered in my entire life living with a serious health condition. He showed no sign of sympathy at all when i told him my partner had just died of cancer, almost was yelling at me when he wasn't scoffing or rolling his eyes, and did not want to do what I wanted, he wanted to extend my easy to read and short list over 3 appointments. I have NO idea why he has a practice deep in the Castro. That office could be used by someone who finished their education in the last 30 years and who can relate to gay men. Your nurse, amazing, and the only redeeming quality of the office. The other "receptionist" who has a light to let you know when he is on the phone (Im not kidding) he is a bitter queen who thinks a lot of himself, but doesn't even do his silly job well. I hope people read this review. I plan on filing a complaint with my insurance company. I do not want this man traumatizing any more young people. Makes sense now why I saw so many 65 year old women in an office @ 18th and Collingwood. This guy is a relic from the past. He should probably retire or teach, although I would not recommend taking any direction from this idiot. read more

Dr. Martin Mass is a good doctor, has a great manner to him, and many kind words should be written in praise. This review, however, is to single out his staff. I am so torn because I feel that I do have to take responsibility for my own healthcare. Dr. Mass can be a very mixed bag. For the most part, however, I feel shutdown and at his mercy in a profound way. I am not the best at accepting responsibility for my best outlook. He has been a gem in regards through working through the beauracy of insurance and red tape. But his systems are very antiquated. He does everything by hand and pen. I often wonder how abreast he is of the latest medical developments. He has horrible bedside manner. I need a little coddling at sometimes because I can be in denial. Since I don't have exposure to my medical records to analyze outside of my appts., I get no cooperation from him. He seems to resent, on one hand, my propensity for Googling and "getting online opinions". I am not completely incapable of evaluating what I read on the Internet as possible symptoms and/or remedies. But he almost gets angry if I mention something I may have read. I took my best friend with me to an appointment because he was concerned about the level of care I was receiving, and he hated Dr. Mass' approach, systems and manners. But I am torn because again he does alleviate my anxiety in dealing with forms and red tapes. I am strongly considering finding another doctor. It's probably in my best interest. Jerry, his receptionist is a good ambassador. Chris, I guess the nurse's aid is a little inept and if I don't have to see him, the better I am. For those who gave him 4-5 stars, I don't quite get it. Still, I don't want to throw the doctor under the bus. Proceed with great caution. read more

Martin Mass is aptly named for a religious feast in which cattle are slaughtered. Sarcastic and dismissive, he acts as if he received The Gospel from the Mount of Wayne State in 1979, supplemented since only by the Ordained Bishops of PhRMA. His hands shake continuously and the left moves involuntarily, so if you need anything that would involve any laying on of hands, especially with anything sharp, then prepare to be sacrificed to his vanity. He refuses to adjust to his increasingly severe age-related limitations, for that would require acknowledging mortal frailty, which would be anathema to his egotistical self-deification. He treats patients as livestock, such that talking is a sign of demonic possession: don't dare question him when he is wrong about something, for then he becomes wrath, or simply lies, especially when he is demonstrably incorrect. The best that can be said of him is that he seems to take every conceivable insurance and indigent program that will have him, and yet he still has plenty of appointments available. Also his office and waiting room have a dizzying collection of promotional materials for drugs you've seen advertised on TV, brought by drug salesmen whom he prioritizes over patients. If you want permission to shift the cost of an overpriced drug you saw on TV, then his shaky hands can probably write out an Rx for you, but otherwise if you value your health at all then steer clear. read more

I had a great Doctor who retired. I had heard great things about Dr. Mass and my first experiences were very positive. Then, last year, I had several emergency hospital stays. He was aware of each of them as all the records were sent to him but he never contacted me or requested a follow up. I had to pursue him for follow up care. He put me through a number of tests and wasn't able to determine what was wrong nor did he refer me to anyone else. A few months ago he asked me to go for a blood test. He asked for a large battery of tests that cost me a lot of money out of pocket and then refused to give me the results because "I wouldn't understand them." That was particularly insulting as I work in healthcare. He has also added a woman to his staff that is the single most rude, nasty and lazy office staff person I have ever associated with. She was the final straw for me. I am finding a new PCP. read more

I saw Martin Mass for several years as my PCP. He has the worst bedside manner I have ever experienced in a doctor. I concur with others who found him to be condescending, dismissive and quite socially incompetent. Although I'm referring to bedside manner, I mean to convey something beyond simply the fact that he isn't warm and fuzzy. He seems to have developed a way of masking what seems to be his own confusion by turning this back on the patient with a surprising level of hostility. This is combined with the fact that he always seemed to enter the room in a state of frustration about something going on in his office. I did not find him to be someone with enough self-awareness not to take his frustrations out on whoever happens to be in front of him. Nor did I find him to be someone who enjoys his job. Other, that is, than the pleasure he seems to derive from making those who come to him with simple questions any doctor should be able to field feel small. Imagine showing up for your appointment and encountering that, every time! Whatever clinical acumen he might have, and I question this, it is unfortunately greatly hindered by a very low level of personal functioning. Because I am fortunate enough to be quite healthy I never had to visit much. Otherwise, I would have realized sooner that this was not the doctor for me. Everyone has their own style and preferences, but I could never recommend this man as the person to see with any health concern anyone might have. read more
