So if you have multiple families (with little kids) sharing a house, and everyone in the house wants to go simultaneously, then they must be shuttled. Which potentially means adding & removing car seats. The town also doesn't seem to have accounted for the case where multiple families from the same house may arrive at different times. (Ex: One family in the permitted car, another family dropped off by someone who doesn't want to go to the beach.) The town gives only 1 set of credentials. Fine, allow only one car. But why not give one beach access card to each family? Finally, this information's buried. We learned it at the pass office; it wasn't in the guidebook we bought, the websites we'd checked, nor our rental's info packet. Hopefully this review will help other families avoid this pitfall. ‍

A park with…read more cannonballs Cannonball Park, also called Memorial Park, was dedicated on July 4th back in 1901 to memorialize the 70 island soldiers that perished in the Civil War. It's on a sliver of land between several major streets in Edgartown and is a place well known but seldom visited. The park is dominated by a huge obelisk with the names of soldiers on it as well as some cool quotes. Several large old cannon are also present as well as several stacks of big, old cannonballs which give the park it's name. Lots of trees and bushes as well as a couple of benches are in the park which makes it a nice little place for a quick rest and reflection before heading on into the center on town. Certainly not a large park, you can walk around it in a few minutes but it's fun to take some time and check out the obelisk and civil war artifacts. A cool little place that helps remember and celebrate the sacrifices made by the people of the island in preserving the nation during a horrible war.

A small park with a…read more big purpose. Trinity Park is a small park located right in the middle of Oak Bluffs. A nice place for a stroll or to view the cottages but the real reason the park exists is because of the Tabernacle. The Tabernacle is a massive open air structure. I'm not sure what the official term for this type of building is, but it's sort of a permanent tent but made of steel and iron. It is huge, over 100 feet high, holds over 3,000 people and is the largest structure of it's kind in the country. It was built back in 1879 to hold the revival meetings of the people that would meet at Oak Bluffs and is presently on the National Register of Historical Buildings. It's now used for Sunday services, community song alongs on Wednesday nights and various concerts throughout the summer. Mostly local performers but some famous artist like James Taylor, Tom Paxton and Bonnie Raitt have been here. Even though it's not used for it's original purpose it still is awe inspiring to walk through. Even though it protects you from the elements, it still gives the feeling of being outside. The acoustics are surprising good and it is a extremely pleasant place to see a concert. With the giant stage or altar and the beautiful stain glass windows, huge beams and massive size it's enough to give some religion, if only for a moment, to the most hardened heathen.
