Lastly, I have eye insurance that doesn't cover much and the optometrist wrote for an expensive medication instead of telling me there is a much cheaper identical equivalent of the benign medication that I should have been prescribed instead to begin with. I had to research myself to find out that the medications have the same mechanism of action but one costs much less. More importantly they should tell their patients about medication options instead of living in fear. Despite me taking the medication for years without doctor or insurance issue, the optometrist was too scared she'd get in trouble if she wrote for the less expensive medication. So I unfortunately ended up finding out this optometrist is against continuity of care out of fear that prescribing the less expensive med (which treats the exact same thing) wouldn't be covered as medically necessary and get her in trouble. Lesson learned, seen an ophthalmologist. People are terrified to prescribe the most innocuous medications these days. It's infuriating to have to hunt for confident prescribers. This is unfortunately not uncommon to find prescribers too scared to do their jobs, but it's completely unfounded and puts more work and cost on the patient.

Over the years he's referred me for additional testing, as needed and he's fully gained my trust and respect for his professionalism and skills. He's very personable and easy to carry on a conversation and laugh with - great attributes in a doctor who spends a good part of the exam less than 10 inches from your face! When I need glasses, he has gotten my prescription perfect every time. The adjustment period to the new lenses has literally been just a few minutes. I've always found frames I loved at his office easily, too. The office staff are always pleasant and personable and Beth can do a quick fix on some maladjusted frames in a matter of seconds anytime I stop in for a tweak. The office is great about processing all the eye insurance claims and the patient never has to get involved. Cargill Eyecare deserves my highest recommendation and I've also heard from many people that Dr. Tom is great with kids, too!

From the moment I walked in and said hello, she was grumpy and unfriendly. I arrived early for my 10:00 a.m. appointment. Even though I had been to this office last year, she asked me to fill out the forms again, which I did. I also called my insurance company and provided the information she requested. After that, before they even looked up the insurance information I had provided, another staff member told me I had to reschedule my appointment. Since it was only around 10:15 a.m., I asked why I needed to reschedule when my appointment had been at 10:00 a.m. I was filling out the forms and calling my insurance company. I explained that I had recently had a baby, had made the effort to come to the appointment, and had done my best to provide the information they needed. As I was leaving, I thanked them for their help, wished them a nice day, and said that I did not want to receive a bill for a visit where I was not seen. Instead of calmly addressing my concern, the front desk staff called out across the front desk toward the door to defend herself. The entire experience felt unprofessional and disappointing.
