I arrived to my 2:40 PM appointment about five minutes early. As soon as I checked in at the desk, the receptionist directed me into an exam room to get my shot. The nurse, Norine, was upbeat and positive. She asked a few questions- the usual consent to receive the vaccine, and that I had not tested positive for COVID recently or received antibody treatments. Norine said she'd been giving COVID-19 vaccines every day since February, and she was a pro. I barely felt the needle. My second appointment is in three weeks, as I got the Pfizer vaccine. I waited for 15 minutes before leaving, which is standard for COVID-19 shots. There are no magazines in the waiting room, so if you don't want to be on your phone, take a magazine or book. Parking is free in the large lot, and I only spent about 20 minutes total (shot + wait) here. The one side effect I experienced was soreness at the injection site, for about a day. The only thing that could've improved my experience would be a fun band-aid or a sticker, but alas, I got a shot of hope for returning to normal in the future.

Dr. Hughes was…read moresuper-nice and explained everything well, and listened to my questions and answered them thoughtfully. He wanted a follow-up MRI to get more detail to determine what the problem was and when I asked if I could have it done closer to home (1.5 hr drive to his office), he readily agreed and said he'd call me with the results so that I wouldn't have to drive all the way back to Mount Pleasant. Very nice. The receptionist however is another story. Every interaction I've had with her has been negative, as she's been rude , dismissive and condescending. As a patient with a history of cancer, anxiety and depression, and now dealing with an anomaly spotted in a brain scan, the last thing I want to have to deal with in the doctor's office is a bad attitude from a receptionist.

Communications are difficult at best and practically invisible. My script was miswritten and I got no response for a correction. I made an appointment for my doctor and found that I was meeting a PA when I arrived. The only help for my pain was to increase gabapentin and see a pain management doctor. I have been going to this office for 9 months for pain and I am no closer to ending the pain than I was 9 months ago. I suggest replacing the office manager who puts patients first and not the bottom line.

(Parking in the tower is $3 with an appointment.) On the date of my appointment, the receptionists were kind and caring. The neurology floor lobby is freshly updated, modern, spacious, and clean. The nurse and neurologist spent an adequate amount of time with me to truly hear my concerns before developing a plan. So far, I am impressed with MUSC's neurology.

My personal experience with the Nurse Practitioner, Katie Smith, was positive but I cannot say the same for many on her staff. Instead of keeping me up to date and informed in a timely on my tests results, along with, providing accurate information, weeks would go by without a returned phone call. When I could get someone on the phone they were more often than not, unapologetic and rude. My requests for basic info re: my care went unanswered for weeks on end - not a returned phone call or email. Imagine being unable to reach anyone at your physicians office when you are in pain and need medication or would like test results and you are told "someone will get back to you" and, yet, no one does. I was warned that MUSC Neurology was difficult to deal with - I wish I had listened - It would have saved me alot of stress. Bottom line: I felt unimportant and that I was a bother --my needs were not a priority.

They were both born addicted and I was told they would always have emotional and learning problems that would plague them the rest of their life. I sought out to create an environment that included surrounding the boys with the best professionals I could find. I used a holistic approach that included establishing very strong relationships with their teachers , resource teachers, pediatrician and neurologist. They have all become family to me. Even though there has been a short periods of time when the Network Neurology practice was going through a turbulent time, I chose to continue to stay the course. and maintain or believe in Dr. Turner and his brain mapping methods. I am thankful I did. My grandsons have come a long way and Dr. Turner's Network Neurology practice has played a major role in the boys journey to overcome their challenges. It's all about surrounding yourself with people you believe in, working hard together and staying the course.
