As I said before, it's a beautiful giant of a building with tall windows, tons of light, the old vault doors leftover from its bank days, lots of marble, wood, and a fancy ceiling. This time I went to see Hank Willis Thomas, another Black artist known for his forceful, graceful sculpture work, which focuses on Black power, unity, equality, and beauty. You should know by now, 0 dollar entry fee for these astounding artists. Can't beat that.

Westbeth Gallery is a large gallery that exhibits paintings, art prints, sculptures, drawings, and…read morephotography work from established and emerging artists. It is located in the sculpture courtyard of Westbeth Artists Housing, (entrance through Bank or Bethune Streets). Westbeth also host lectures and rent their gallery for events. I participated as a feature spoken word performer for a annual poetry marathon, "Alternative New Year's Day Spoken Word/Performance Extravaganza 2025." I am grateful, honored and exuberant to be a feature participant of this annual spoken word performance marathon. The space is gargantuan despite the event was full it did not feel crowded. I did not have a problem locating a seat and I was not crammed with my seat neighbor like rush hour on a NYC subway. LED white lighting made the art gallery very bright which I admire in a art gallery to view art in bright light for the definite underwriting in its original form, without incandescent lighting to distort artwork's appearance. The outdoor courtyard contains art sculpture for public viewing. Facilities are available and clean. I did not interact with the Westbeth Gallery staff as I did not see any upon my entrance, thus no comment for customer service. This gallery is located between Washington Street & West Street in West Village, near West Side Highway (NYS Route 9A). It is nearly inaccessible by mass transit as the nearest subways are the A/C/E/L at Eighth Avenue and East 14th Street. Following the subways subsequently travel continue are the MTA buses that stop at Abingdon Square are the M11, M12 and northbound M20 buses, and M14A's last stop is one short block before Abingdon Square. Four stars due to the inaccessibility via mass transit. I spent $20.00 (including tax and gratuity) hailing a NYC Taxi from the A train at 14th Street and Eighth Avenue to reach this gallery as my destination. I am a non-driver and the MTA NYC Transit is how I navigate my travels throughout New York City.

I also loved the show I saw there: Lubaina Himid's "Street Sellers," which focuses on street vendors and their colorful wares, as well as how they relate to society and maybe even capitalism and colonialism. Huge, tall portraits, filled with color. Reviewing their past exhibitions, not every exhibition is my vibe, but the art they showcase is very diverse, and there is something for everyone. Like all the other galleries I've reviewed, it's free. And when in Chelsea, you can hit up several and make a whole field trip out of it. So what do you have to lose?

Whatever artists are sourced for this business are truly untalented who copy all the worst ideas from the last 20 years and cover them in dripping graffiti. If you choose to spend money on one of these pieces and display it in your home you will reflect not only disgusting taste, but terrible judgement as well. An insult to 'art' all around.

Went for their "Open Studios" day, where they have all five floors open to the public. The artists are there hanging out and talking to visitors while displaying their art work. I believe they have this twice a year; unsure, don't quote me! Really cool and unique artwork! Awesome art mediums, each so different from the rest. Went again for their "annual art sale" on December 8th. They also have different events throughout the year. I remember a while back, I heard that they hosted yoga classes, not sure if that is still going on. Will ask next time I visit!

If you go expecting the allegedly largest outdoor sculpture park in NYC to be an open-air museum…read moreand a world-class cultural attraction, I will sell you the bridge I crossed to get there that someone had sold me earlier. But, it's free, so five stars. Allegedly there is more than 65 large-scale contemporary sculptures spread across the lush lawns, but I had only discovered the main lawnl thinking the 15 or so pieces I saw was it. Darn it. Since it rotates every few years, I guess I will go back and check behind the buildings. At least it's full of shade and secure and free of litter, graffiti, and, unlike the cleanest of NYC parks: no traffic noise. It's mostly abstract and all big in scale. I saw a circle of bricks, an upside down bench, a leaf skeleton, a big head. Giant head. Like it's seven feet tall. That's what you want! Come on, you don't want to go to the park for a little head. Well, unless you're my cousin Ryan.

There are some pretty awesome sculptures, many of which seem to be permanent, though there appear to be some rotating ones (based on other Yelpers photos). Many were very thought provoking or led to awesome photos with friends. There are plenty of places to sit, too, if you care to spend a bit more time. Totally free! If you're anywhere near by, you must check it out. Or, I'd say it's even worth traveling for if you're up for exploring the rest of the neighborhood, as well.

A life size replica of a girl on a raft that's floating on water (the material was reflective so it did look like dark eerie water). They also had small replicas of houses. Everything was in a greyscale theme. The gallery itself wasn't huge but worked well for this specific exhibition.

They only have two to three brochures, which is a limited number. The space contained works of dynamic sizes; however, some parts felt as though they did not have enough work, and the wall seemed pretty empty. As all of these galleries are for private consumption inventory changes. I love the artists that this gallery has chosen. The works are genius. It was my favorite of the 15 we viewed in April 2015. Many of the artists they have chosen have a simple complexity to them. There is such complexity in simple that the artist shines. I can't quite explain it. You really should try to go and see it. The art is likely quite expensive as with all the galleries in Chelsea. Viewing is free though.

My favorite thing in the Jonas Wood exhibition that's currently on view at Anton Kern is a gray dog…read moreat the bottom of a big painting--a schnauzer? not good with breeds here--that looked so funnily uneven and odd, not only because its head was cocked to one side, its eyes looking directly out of the painting at the viewer in that inquisitive, expectant way that dogs do--but also the way its face was painted was split in half, making its expression not just searching but also insane. Some dogs really have expressions like that! The split in the face was mainly caused by the way Wood paints--making strips of paint with ragged edges, as if he's dragging the brush downward in a very tense zig-zag, leaving these skinny tight tiretracks of paint. The dog is made of these stripes. In Wood's paintings lots of different things--animals, furniture, whatever--are made of these strips. But not everything is, so there is a variety of texture to his surfaces that I find appealing, and it nudges against the repetitive pleasure of the stripe patterns. Jonas Wood's paintings are mostly interiors, and when they're not they are the kind of paintings you'd expect to find in a normal home--a portrait of a pretty peacock, some flowers, a portrait of a couple--and he underscores the fact that he's making "paintings of paintings" by cleverly inserting them in his interiors. So in the one with the dog at the bottom, you can see the peacock painting (which hangs separately in the same gallery) IN that painting. There's a painting of a poker tournament, the one thing in the show that might be thought of as happening in a public space, but you can tell from lettering on it that it's a painting of a TV screen, so again the perspective is domestic. And the television studio where the poker game is being played is made up of the same stripes that the dog is. I wouldn't say Jonas Wood is a mind-blowing painter but I certainly enjoyed myself looking at his work.
