Take the elevator up to the 4th floor, and you'll walk out into what is basically a floor of doorless apartments, where an assortment of stark, cool art galleries await you, the names of many of which, like the Bowery itself, bear witness to their flight from gentrification and make me wonder, as this charming gallery sits in the shadow of the High Line, where it will probably move to next.
The Bowery is a co-op gallery originally opened in 1969. They offer a diverse array of shows in a cool space that is slightly cramped (at least if you are here for an opening), but provides a cozy, well-lit spot to enjoy exceptional art. And if you don't like what's on display, you can wander the halls and find another gallery to peruse.
If you have a chance to visit over the next month, check out the lovely, inspired, Cezanne-esque still life paintings by the wonderful Lynn Kotula. read more
