They require very specific language in a filing that is not required by other North Carolina Clerks. So you will make a filing, it will be rejected for knit-picking reasons by one employee, you will address all of THAT person's concerns, then it will be rejected by another employee for different knit-picking reasons. Mind you, I've been filing estates for 20 years so I know how to open an estate. According to someone who works on a daily basis with the Cumberland Clerk's office, NOTHING ever goes right with this place. Mostly due to their eccentric lack of helpfulness and their obscure make-it-up-as-you-go "requirements." They also have the weirdest phone system: ALL calls are directed to the phone of a single woman who rarely answers her phone and "forgets" to relay your messages to the staff. If she transfers you to the phone of one of the deputy clerks, they NEVER return your calls. So you have to call several times to break through the wall. IF at all. I guess there is not enough going on in Fayetteville so they entertain themselves by rejecting filings and tripling your time the expenses incurred in filing a document. Hostile and passive aggressive. They forget they are affecting the very real lives of the grieving and making the experience worse.

It was a criminal case and I really enjoyed listening to the attorneys and the judge who thanked everyone for their time. The building is huge and ornate as well. Who knew they had a Cafe on the 1st floor? Lunch was pretty good: fried chicken well seasoned with that lovely brown "you know it was cooked all the way" color, collard greens and macaroni and cheese. Worth going in person to see how things work. All in All it was a good day.

I was at the courthouse for Jury duty. I spent the entire 8 hours reading a book and listening to…read moremusic. I was welcomed to the courthouse by the extremely "friendly" security staff. They got the job done through and ensured everyone was safe going into the building. I was very disappointed that the drink machine was out of order when they had advertised online that you could purchase refreshments in the waiting area. Towards the end of the day, I did find out that you can leave the waiting area to purchase drinks and snacks from vending machines on another floor. They really should have posted a sign indicating this information on their broken vending machines. Although I did not get picked to be on a jury, I enjoyed sitting in a comfortable chair and reading my book for 8 hours. Hopefully I don't have to go back soon.

Johnston County's Courthouse was completed in 1921 and is a three-story frame building in the…read moreClassical Revival style. It has a four column portico and a stone balustrade at the roofline. There is recessed entrance a large vertical windows on the second and third stories. The roof line is flat. In the interior, the main courtroom is located on the third story and has a balcony on the rear side. Johnston County was formed in 1746 and Clayton was selected as the county seat with the county's first courthouse. The seat was moved to Smithfield in 1771 and the new courthouse was built here. A third courthouse was built in 1786 and then a fourth in 1843. This one is the fifth and is considered "the old courthouse" as the current one was built in the 1980s. There is a Civil War marker on the front steps - General William T Sherman used the 1771 courthouse as his headquarters on his march toward Raleigh. On April 12th 1865 Sherman received a telegram from General Ulysses S Grant informing him of General Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox while in Smithfield. There is also a WWI memorial with a "doughboy" holding his rifle "In memory of the illustrious dead of Johnston County who died in the Great World War 1917-1919" with a list of names. Its symmetrical two-story brick façade features a five-bay central block flanked by two-bay wings, all topped by a low hip roof and a commanding cupola that still defines the skyline of downtown Monroe. In 1922, two three-bay wings were added to the north and south, carefully designed to preserve the building's original balance and style. More than just a handsome structure, the courthouse has stood witness to pivotal chapters in Union County's story from Reconstruction-era governance to civil rights-era legal battles. According to the marker, "The first courthouse at this site was destroyed by fire March 19, 1806. A…read morelater building, thought to have been designed by architect Robert Mills, burned in 1866 and in 1873 was rebuilt. The subsequent courthouse, built 1903-1904, was in use until 1964 when the present structure was completed." This structuring houses the County Circuit Court of the 4th Judicial Circuit. It is a six-story brick, concrete, stone and glass structure. The roofline is flat. It's basically a big square cube with vertical stripes of windows and brick bands. Sunday morning in Concord meant that the historic Cabarrus County Courthouse was completely closed,…read morebut that actually made the visit better because I could walk the grounds without anyone around and really study this 1876 landmark that replaced an earlier courthouse lost to fire. Knowing it was designed by GSH Appleget made me pay more attention to the Victorian mix of Second Empire and Italianate details with the tall clock tower, arched windows, and that distinctive roofline. This is the third courthouse on this spot since Cabarrus County was created in 1792 and named for Stephen Cabarrus, a French‑born North Carolina legislator who served as Speaker of the state House of Commons in the 1790s. Concord has been the county seat from the very beginning and the building still feels like the civic anchor even though it no longer handles court business. Circling the exterior with no traffic or courthouse activity let me really take in the stuccoed brick, the symmetry and the way the morning light hit the tower. It was nice not having to weave around people or explain why I was photographic a government building. The quiet made the history feel more present in that way where you can start imagining the earlier wooden and brick courthouses that once stood here. Today, the building houses the Cabarrus Art Council and local history exhibits instead of judges and lawyers, but on a calm Sunday morning it still feels like the heart of downtown Concord and being able to enjoy it undisturbed made the stop absolutely worth it. Located on the grounds of the old Union County Courthouse, this 40 foot tall granite obelisk is a…read morememorial to the Confederate soldiers from Union County. Atop the three-tier granite foundation rests the base of the obelisk. The tall shaft is topped with a polished sphere. All four sides of the base are inscribed. The east face of the base features a Confederate flag, while the east and west faces depict crossed rifles and crossed cavalry sabers, respectively. The monument was installed in 1910 by the Monroe Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. There has been some discussion about removing it and at this time, it is surrounded by chain link fence to prevent damage or vandalism. I parked in a parking deck down the street and walked to the Register of Deeds office, which is right behind the courthouse. When you enter, just like at the courthouse, you have to go thru security like normal. The security guards ask where you're going, and they give you directions as to where to go so you don't get lost, which is very helpful. There's a long hallway that leads to the room where you go to get your marriage license and notary oaths taken. As soon as I walked in, there was no line a nice lady at the counter asked what I needed and once I told her she was quick to help me out, I did my Oath and was in and out in less than 10min. I just hate going to uptown for anything because of the parking situation, but other than that, I always have a pleasant interaction with anyone at the Register of Deeds office.

It is a three-story Classical Revival building made of rectangular tan brick. It has a clock in the tympanum of the pediment and a pedimented portico. In 1976, the inside was renovated. Unfortunately, the building was secure when I visited over the weekend. You can still walk the exterior to appreciate the structure and the various monuments on the grounds. Montgomery County was formed in 1779 from Anson County and included what is now Stanly County. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, Canada.
