The video played for us was a bunch of nonsense, as we're a constitutional republic not a democracy. How do I trust the system when the system can't even get it right? This is humiliation no human should endure by any court system. So disrespectful, rude, & harsh environment! Less a confession, my vote will be not guilty simply bc of how ive been treated today. No person should suffer the system.

I was at the courthouse for Jury duty. I spent the entire 8 hours reading a book and listening to…read moremusic. I was welcomed to the courthouse by the extremely "friendly" security staff. They got the job done through and ensured everyone was safe going into the building. I was very disappointed that the drink machine was out of order when they had advertised online that you could purchase refreshments in the waiting area. Towards the end of the day, I did find out that you can leave the waiting area to purchase drinks and snacks from vending machines on another floor. They really should have posted a sign indicating this information on their broken vending machines. Although I did not get picked to be on a jury, I enjoyed sitting in a comfortable chair and reading my book for 8 hours. Hopefully I don't have to go back soon.

If the civil file office had a way of receiving card payments for copies, this would've been a 5 star review. Overall, decent staff. The cafe on the first floor is nice too. There is recessed entrance a large vertical windows on the second and third stories. The roof line is flat. In the interior, the main courtroom is located on the third story and has a balcony on the rear side. Johnston County was formed in 1746 and Clayton was selected as the county seat with the county's first courthouse. The seat was moved to Smithfield in 1771 and the new courthouse was built here. A third courthouse was built in 1786 and then a fourth in 1843. This one is the fifth and is considered "the old courthouse" as the current one was built in the 1980s. There is a Civil War marker on the front steps - General William T Sherman used the 1771 courthouse as his headquarters on his march toward Raleigh. On April 12th 1865 Sherman received a telegram from General Ulysses S Grant informing him of General Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox while in Smithfield. There is also a WWI memorial with a "doughboy" holding his rifle "In memory of the illustrious dead of Johnston County who died in the Great World War 1917-1919" with a list of names. The subsequent courthouse, built 1903-1904, was in use until 1964 when the present structure was completed." This structuring houses the County Circuit Court of the 4th Judicial Circuit. It is a six-story brick, concrete, stone and glass structure. The roofline is flat. It's basically a big square cube with vertical stripes of windows and brick bands. There is a small square in front which looks like it could be used for small events. There is also a Conderate memorial here to check out. This winter visit was not the most colorful, but the building looks unique and distinctive to an era. It is still used for county government use.

There are six courtrooms, only two with a decent amount of space. On certain days, like traffic administration court, there are over 1000 people on the docket for one court room. And that does not include the entourage most people bring along...their kids, their significant others, their brother-in-law's cousin who took a criminal justice class through Phoenix University and just looooves Law & Order SVU. People overflow into the lobby and adjacent hallways, loitering around and being noisy. The Assistant District Attorneys have developed a great system, and they do their best to maintain order in the face of chaos, but it is no easy task. Additionally, courthouse security, provided by the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office, only has one metal detector. So there is one line, through which everyone except card-carrying employees must travel, and they require that people take off their belts, jackets, and sometimes their shoes. As you can imagine, when you have hundreds of people coming to court at the same time, you can have people lined up all the way through the front doors. The deputies do a nice job of moving people through efficiently while still being thorough and keeping everyone safe. Hopefully, you will have no need to come to the courthouse, but if you do, don't come on a Friday--just a tip.

Located on the grounds of the old Union County Courthouse, this 40 foot tall granite obelisk is a…read morememorial to the Confederate soldiers from Union County. Atop the three-tier granite foundation rests the base of the obelisk. The tall shaft is topped with a polished sphere. All four sides of the base are inscribed. The east face of the base features a Confederate flag, while the east and west faces depict crossed rifles and crossed cavalry sabers, respectively. The monument was installed in 1910 by the Monroe Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. There has been some discussion about removing it and at this time, it is surrounded by chain link fence to prevent damage or vandalism. It is a three-story Classical Revival building made of rectangular tan brick. It has a clock in the tympanum of the pediment and a pedimented portico. In 1976, the inside was renovated. Unfortunately, the building was secure when I visited over the weekend. You can still walk the exterior to appreciate the structure and the various monuments on the grounds. Montgomery County was formed in 1779 from Anson County and included what is now Stanly County. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, Canada.
