    Sparkling interior of Mark's

Stopped by Kitchener for an opening and decided to grab a late dinner at Mark's. Being used to hole-in-the-wall Caribbean reataurants in Mississauga and Scarborough, it was a pleasant surprise to find out spacious Mark's is. The decor consists of wall length and ceiling height photographs of the tropics, lending an openness and vibrancy to the restaurants that's amplified by its reggae soundtrack. As a vegetarian, I order an eggplant dish---the only vegetarian main I noticed on the menu since I don't eat seafood. For $14, the meal came with a bowl of its namesake---the eggplant, a hefty piece of plantain, dahl puri (you can also choose roti, rice or rice and peas), and house coleslaw--possibly one of the best if not the best coleslaw I've had in a long while. Overall the meal is just right, the service is top notch and the location is central. My partner, who ordered Jerk chicken was especially impressed with the value of his meal---since he literally got a mound of chicken, 6 pieces in total was his count. At the end of our meal, Mark, the chef himself came to check in with us and to personally invite us back to the reataurant. Based on this personal touch, I would have thought the restaurant had only just opened, but Mark confirmed they would be celebrating its 1 year anniversary next month. That said, it's nice to know that even when a restaurant has been on the block for a while, it's chef/owner is still invested in taking the effort to welcome first time diners into the space. Based on the quality food and the friendly, impressionable service, I would definitely consider revisiting Mark's when I'm back in Kitchener and would also recommend it to friends. As a last note, FYI the restrooms are not accessible (down a set of stairs) and while they are single stall, they are gendered.

My experience at Mark's from beginning to end was phenomenal! My boyfriend and I went in on a Friday night for dinner. The decor was awesome and really took us out of Kitchener and onto the beaches of the Carribean. We even took a picture against the wall with the images of sandy beaches behind us and a few of my friends thought we actually went to Jamaica haha! For an appetizer, we decided on the fishcakes ($8). I chose the eggplant dish ($14) for my main and my boyfriend chose the jerk chicken ($16). The fishcakes arrived first and they were delicious beyond my expectations, it had lots of fishy flavor with a crispy golden brown exterior! The wait for our main course felt a little long, this was partially due to how busy they were on a Friday night but mostly due to how excited I was for our food to come, especially after having their fishcakes. Our food arrived and my eggplant dish looked amazing - there was a bowl of sauteed eggplant and potatoes, rice and peas, and a side of plantain. I was extremely happy, eggplants are one of my favorite vegetables and to have an entire bowl of it is my dream. My boyfriend's jerk chicken dish came with 6 pieces of chicken and rice and peas. He said it was the best jerk chicken he has ever had! I tried some of his chicken and the spice mixture was magic! The waitresses were really attentive and kept coming over to refill our waters even though the restaurant was busy. I look forward to my next flavor vacation to Mark's Carribean Kitchen, it is a special place with spectacular food and people!
