I own 1971 VW Bus. It's my daily driver. I live local. Older V-Dubs are quite easy to work on, but have engines seen less frequently by local mechanics. I Asked Mark's Auto to install a thermostat kit and clutch. They indicated they're not afraid of Volkswagens and had experience with Porshe engines. I provided parts. They provided labor. I took a chance with Mark's Auto because they are nearby. I'm seeking mechanics I can trust. They looked the bus over and provided a quote for kit installation. Their estimate was Extremely High due to lack of experience with air-cooled VWs, and to cover their butt for unexpected obstacles. I agreed to give them an opportunity, rolling the dice, so to speak. Unfortanately, they struggled to do this timely. My bus stayed at their outdoor hoist for 12-days. That is not a reasonable in any stretch of imagination. But it is what it is. They charged me a great deal more than their original quote. So I paid double dearly to keep it local. Their high-end quote was for $1,400.00. 13 Days after they began, they presented a bill for $1,675.00 dollars. Their markup on common worn parts they order are literally - Astronomical. If I provide them more business, a more reasonable learning-curve labor charge is requisite in earning my trust. Otherwise, it's a short jaunt to Bend or Eugene, of course. So far, I suspect they did quality work (albeit expensive) on my bus. Only time and distance will tell. read more

Got a rock stuck between my brake and dust shield on my way to Bend. Pulled in to Marks on the recommendation from the cashier at Auto Zone. As I pulled up, heads turned - they heard the screeching as I approached. Before I could even get out of my car and ask for help, a guy came over with a tool and freed the rock in under a minute. We took our Jeep Grand Cherokee to 3 different mechanics and spent thousands of dollars in the process without any of them fixing the issue with the vehicle. Two of the auto repair shops were NAPA certified. The NAPA certified repair shop in Prineville had our vehicle for over 7 months before we gave up on them and drove the vehicle home with the check engine light still on and the vehicle not repaired. We then called Mark and asked him if he would perform a diagnostic test on our vehicle? In no time at all Mark diagnosed the problem with our Jeep. It was a faulty distributor that was a "New" NAPA part installed by a NAPA certified mechanic. The total cost of the repair? $140.00 We have since taken our other Jeep into Mark's Auto Repair for service and were extremely satisfied with price and quality of service we received. We have finally found an auto repair shop that we can trust and that provides excellent service at very reasonable prices. read more

I took my van into this shop for a tune-up and to repair a leak coming from one of the front ball joints (not sure of the exact part name). He charged me around $350 for that repair and with the tune-up, the bill was just under $600. Three months later, while at Les Schwabs, the attendant showed me the exact part Mark was supposed to have replaced and it was still leaking, around the rubber coupling. It had not been replaced and was still leaking so they replaced it for me, so I basically had to pay twice. I will never take another vehicle to this shop. I've heard it you take a man in with you, you may get good service, but I didn't know that at the time. read more

First the worker sounded annoyed even picking up the phone... I called a couple months ago to get my car towed by Mark's auto to get my ignition fixed. I let them know the job was started but never finished by someone else... They said they would pick it up and that it may take a few days. I agreed. They never came to pick up my car or even called me to let me know they would not be coming or working on my vehicle. Frustrating... I called again today to see if they would work on my car and I was told, "Not Interested." That was it. No explanation nothing. If you want to waste some time contact Marks Auto. Very disappointed. Had to find a new mechanic after I moved and got some new brakes put in. Had to immediately come back because they forgot to let some air out, and then a couple weeks later took it to a new mechanic and found out that bolts were missing and the damage from their bad brake job cost nearly $300 and they wouldn't compensate anything. Back in December, my Toyota Corolla was at LSwabbs for a Battery, Alternator was bad, they suggested... So, my sister and mines friend took our car there. This is His Experience... So , After the two elderly women were stuck, I got the car over to this place. Just entering, you know... Anyways, i asked the owner if he worked on Toyota;s, and I needed a Alternator. He said, Could get it in 30 minutes, so I went back to the sisters, told them. He stated a Price, reasonable. Came back, strange, the older mechanic seemed very distant, I tipped him $20, he had the Alternator out in minutes... Now, we get the owner, strange, they never TESTED the NEW ALTERNATOR FIRST?, so, the older man leaves, I dont ever see him again. Now, we have Mark, Michael and Nathan? there, they are only working on another car, yet, this whole time, many people come up, The place is a DUMP, the Dog is loose, bites... So, I tip $20 to Michael, Mark, comes out and even states, Should have tested the Alternator, of course, it doesnt work, and are now under the dash, for a ALTERNATOR REPLACEMENT!!!!. Mark is not paying attention, with a SCREW DRIVER, and shocks himself with the Starter, he tells me, I might have to Start the Car with a screwdriver by hitting the Starter??? exactly... they finally got the car to somewhat drive, I couldnt wait just to get away from there, got to Auto Zone, they test it, something this person should have, and found, yep, bad alternator, paid $250, and when I called Mark back, and told him, he and whoever was in his office, cussing me out using the F WORD... I wouldnt tell MY WORST ENEMIES WORST ENEMY to go to this S HOLE, oh, and these mechanics? working with MARK, will be just the same, If the other mechanic wouldnt have been 8 days out... and no wonder, MARK could instantly see me... this is how they TREAT DISABLED ELDERLY PEOPLE... shouldnt be in business... The owner illegally performed "repairs" on my vehicle without authorization from myself or my insurance company, then refused to release the vehicle without being paid for these illegal "repairs." He produced no written documentation of any authorization of work, because he was never given authorization. He could not produce a detailed work order for the "repairs" he did, either. What shop ever performs any work without written, signed authorization from the vehicle owner? As for said "repairs," the part he claimed to replace was still clearly broken when it was inspected by a reputable shop immediately after leaving his lot -- it had a six-inch hole in it. Not only that, but that car was not safe to drive. Nearly $6,000 in damages still needed to be repaired. Mark's is not a reputable business. Authorities have been notified about this shop's illegal activity. read more

Had problems he tracked to a bad battery last year. Recent starting issues had me back there again. He charged me 115, said bad trailer wiring, said truck was good. Not true. Took it back. Said I had a ground he couldn't find. Said all fuses were good. I bought a cheap tester light and tracked down only 1 short to the T-case. Good job Mark. That didn't solve the issue. I took the battery (he sold me as new last year) to Carquest. (It was labeled Carquest). They don't sell Carquest batteries but he told me the battery was completely dead and 3 years old. when we first moved to madras 2 years ago his shop worked on a honda we bought and did alright. later he fixed the transaxel on the drivers side and charged less then 200 bucks. very recently the transaxel went out on the other side. i phoned the shop and was told to have it towed to the shop and they'd take a look at it. so I waited till tuesday afternoon and no one had called , so I called them. Whoever answered the phone didn't know what I was talking about and said he'd check it out and call me back.Again I waited till 5pm with no return call so I called them and got no answer. I called back the next day mid morning. he tells me that it wouldn't start, and that the valve cover that they fixed previously was leaking and that's why it wouldn't start so they put a new one on and the issue with starting was fixed. well that wasn't why the car was there. he sounded surprised to hear that and again I told him the transaxel needs replaced. He said he was going to drive it and see what it does. I told him that it wont drive that's why it was towed there. again he said he'd call me back. I waited till late afternoon and I called him back. Hes acting like Im bothering him and yells to someone what's going on with the honda. The guy yells back to him and I quote" you mean the piece of shit honda?". So now he's insulting me on top of acting like he's annoyed that he's even talking to me. When he finally looked at what I brought the car there to be fixed in the first place, he confirmed it needed the transaxel replaced like I said .Then he tells me he's going to charge me 1,500 hundred dollars. when I told him he was out of his mind, and reminded him he'd already done the drivers side for less then 200.00 and asked why it was now 1300 more for the same job he hung up on me. They were rude. Completely disrespectful and totally unprofessional. I told him I didn't have that kind of money and to please leave the car where I can have it towed to a different mechanic he again hung up on me. When I went to check on the car I found they had left the window down and the key on the seat where anyone could have taken it. I wouldn't recommend this shop if it was the only one left on the planet. As for the people working there, two thumbs down. EPIC FAIL. Mark treating people rude and disrespectful will come back to you tenfold. Whatever you do, DONT bring your car to this shop. Save time and headaches and take it anywhere but here. read more

We were stranded 30 miles north of Madras - serpentine belt, fan, etc. - on our way to the cabin in WA. Got a tow to Mark's and they were fantastic. Looked at it immediately, diagnosed the problem and parts needed which were in stock. They would have had us back on the road in 1 1/2 hr. but once they got into it further discovered the truck needed a clutch plate which had to be ordered. Spent one night in Madras - they got the part in first thing in the morning and we had our truck back by 9:30 a.m. We live in CA and hopefully, we will never have need of their services again, but if anything happens on our way to or from home again and we are in their area, no question, we're going to Mark's! read more
