The front office, the dental assistants, hygienists and especially the office manager are top tier. I have been treated wonderfully by them. They are efficient in every area of their practice. I would give all of them 5 stars! Mark Kaip deserved 1 star. First off, he made some incorrect scans for three crowns and they caused my bite to be off. This in itself was not a huge error and once he discovered it, he immediately corrected his errors and did not charge me. It did, however, mean crowns cut off very vulnerable teeth, and repeated appointments to try and correct my bite. At the time, I had been in a very bad car accident and my dog had died. His lack of empathy was amazing. All he seemed to care about was getting me into the office repeatedly to correct his errors. It seemed like he couldn't have cared less about my emotional state. At that point, I changed to Dr. DeAmbrosia who does amazing work and is the exact opposite of Mark when it comes to supporting ALL of the patient. Recently I had another situation where Dr. DeAmbrosia was concerned about one of my teeth. It had been bothering me since it was put on by Mark and I had complained about it. Dr. Kaip seemed to be more concerned about a food trap that had been built. Anyway, Dr. DeAmbrosia did X-rays and decided to send me back to the endodontist who had done the initial root canal on that tooth. When I went to the endodontist, he asked me if I had been seeing another practitioner, because he could see root work had been done on that tooth. Evidently, Mark Kaip had taken it upon himself to put a tube in one of my root canals before he put the crown on. The endodontist told me it was "not up to current standards" for work on root canals. Because of a past trauma, and loss of a tooth by another dentist, I have a policy of NEVER letting a dentist do root canals and I was very vocal about my policy. To say I was upset was an understatement! It also cost me $1800 and an uncomfortable surgery to correct what had been done. Also there is no guarantee that it will save my tooth. Here's the part that gets me the most. Dr. Kaip went to the endodontist to plead his case and even went to the periodontist I was seeing. The periodontist was trying to save an implant that had been delayed. The periodontist had absolutely nothing to do with the tooth with the root canal, but when I had an appointment with the periodontist, he started telling me that Dr. Kaip had done nothing wrong in putting that tube in the root canal and what a wonderful dentist he was. Gee, how did the periodontist find out about something in which he had no practice? Guess Dr. Kaip went to him to tell him how wrong I was in accusing Dr. Kaip of making a mistake. Is this is a case of two professionals getting together to blame the patient? Particularly, men accusing women? I think that's what bothers me the most. It's not all the difficulty that Dr. Kaip caused me, it's him going outside the practice to demean me to the other professionals. Needless to say, I will be moving on from this practice and will be looking for professionals that did not go to OHSU dental school at the same time. It saddens me greatly because the rest of the staff, particularly Kathi Andersen and Dr DeAngelo, could not have been kinder and more professional. I even suspect Mark Kaip of being a very good dentist, but his behavior outside dentistry, in my case, was unacceptable. read more

My experience at MK Distinctive Dentistry is nothing but top notch. My dentist is Dr Alyse D'Ambrosia. Prior to being a patient at MK, I was going to another dental provider. With my previous provider, the back of the office where all the work was done was fine. It was the front of the office that was the issue. After witnessing a horrible interaction between the front desk and a possible new patient, I decided that it was time to leave. with my background in customer service, listening to her speak condescendingly was appalling. It is my belief that if you are to spend thousands of dollars to get help, the very least you should expect is a kind exchange. Walking into MK for the first time was like a breath of fresh air. All smiles and so very kind. Dr D'Ambrosia and her assistant Elvia make me feel comfortable. Dr always takes time to explain procedures and she always goes above and beyond. Arriving early for an appointment, Kathy asked me if I wanted something to drink, she insisted to make me a cup even though I could have done it myself. She literally walked around and came out from the desk and served me. That was the cherry on the top. I feel that patients forget that WE have a choice to WHOM we receive care. And even tho my out of pocket costs are subsidized by the insurance payout, we also forget that if we are paying someone to a service, in short, THEY, work for us. There are so many dental providers in our city, do yourself a favor and go to MK. Ample parking, great staff front and back! read more

My spouse and I have been going here for ~13 years. For my 88 year-old mom I did extensive research on various dentists in Portland: Yelp, Angie's List, nextdoor.com and general recommendations. In-network dentists were definitely less expensive out-of-pocket wise, but the choices were sparse. And I wouldn't recommend any of the ones I visited. For a few I kept on driving by just looking at the building. A shabby exterior and waiting room says something about the quality inside. Most out-of-network dentists had similar insurance policies and costs. What sets Dr. Kaip's office apart is that the awesome front desk team tries to help you find answers. Tip: If you're using dental rider insurance through a Medicare Advantage plan do not ask, "do you take Medicare?" Almost all dentists will avoid you like a leper. In sum, costs for most out-of-network dentists seem to be in a range, what sets the quality dentists apart from the also-rans is service and cleanliness. Lastly, Dr. Kaip is extremely personable, gentle, and completely trustworthy. read more

He is extremely personable, yet professional and exceedingly knowledgeable; has wonderful hygienists (Stephanie is AWESOME!), dental assistants, and office staff; and uses state-of-the-art equipment. He even has the equipment to make crowns in-office, which allows for the entire process to take place within one visit! His office ALWAYS runs on time, which is very important to me, yet whenever I have an unforeseen dental issue, they are able to work me in within a timely manner (often the same day).
