While the customer service was always very pleasant, the price and order time were not ideal. I actually placed the exact same compounded drug order at other pharmacy on the same day. Mark Drugs charged 18% more, and required advance payment over the phone (which the other pharmacy did not). Their lab then took twice as long for the prescription to be ready. My 85 year old mom (early Alz) rolled her ankle and we went to emergency care and she was given a boot that pumps up with air. She wore it for a week, maybe two at most then stopped. It was too difficult for her to put on/off. Went to Orthopedic Dr and was given an ankle brace that was also too confusing for her to put on. Then I found Mark Drugs! We were able to try on several different types of ankle braces and chose the one that seemed easiest for mom to be able to put on/off. We also bought a new sturdier cane. The saleswoman even showed us how to adjust the cane to be the optimal height. They have what looks like a mini museum in there with all types of vintage medical supplies from days gone by. This pharmacy totally screwed me over with medication prescribed for my cat. My veterinarian called them directly to put in the prescription dosage amount, corrected the pharmacist on the phone when they repeatedly said the wrong dosage amount, and STILL gave me the wrong dosage for my cat. 100x the dosage amount prescribed! Then they claim that it's MY fault and only want to give me a partial refund for THEIR mistake on a very expensive medication that I am not even able to use. Not to mention I was supposed to be able to pick it up Friday, when I called them to check if it was ready (when I was TOLD it would be ready) they claim they were "JUST about to call me" and tell me that the medication was having trouble dissolving correctly and they needed to make it into capsules which would be even MORE expensive. Then I had to wait DAYS to pick up the capsules only to find out they're not even the correct dosage! Absolutely ridiculous that this pharmacy won't take accountability or accept responsibility for THEIR mistake, and I still have to pay the price for medication I CAN'T GIVE MY CAT. And, now my cat has to have a urinary catheter in for a whole week longer since I had to wait another week to get this medication. Never will I use this pharmacy and I recommended that my veterinary hospital uses a different pharmacy as well. So unprofessional and again, absolutely ridiculous. read more

My son was born 6 weeks early due to unknown causes (pPROM). I'm currently 15.5 weeks pregnant with my second child, and my doctor prescribed me hydroxyprogesterone to try and prevent a second preterm birth. The nurse I've been working with had great things to say about Mark Drugs Pharmacy and is the one who referred me. She was absolutely correct! The staff was super nice and personable both on the phone and in person. My Rx took 2 days to be ready (compounded). When I arrived in person, we chatted about kids, alma maters, and about how to self-inject a drug like this intramuscularly. I was in/out in about 8 minutes. Their cost - at least for my particular Rx - was insanely reasonable at $75 for five (1mL) doses. A full course of treatment (20 injections) would be $300 out of pocket. It's literally tens of thousands of dollars saved over the cost of the Big Pharma brand. For moms needing the same drug that may not be (or only partially) covered by insurance, Mark Drugs offers an excellent alternative! They were able to add on needles/syringes to my order (about $4.50 for 20 of them), too! I would absolutely use Mark Drugs Pharmacy again in the future! read more

I've gone here a couple times for a special prescription my doctor prescribed and I had to go here to get it. It seems they compound their own medications which is super cool. The pharmacy has a bunch of cool old antique looking medical items which makes for a cool feel. They don't take Blue Cross, Blue Shield which is a bummer and a bit weird...but they did give me a form to submit to my insurance. *fingers crossed*. Wow. Horrible experience. I was told on the phone that they should take my insurance. I drove out the next day and with no bin number on my insurance card the manager came over and said "it's not worth the $2 I make to call the 800 number for this" he went on to explain they carry very few medications there and I should be able to get it somewhere else. I was a fan of Mark drugs until today. My dog requires a compounded medication. At the suggestion of one of the employees I switched from strawberry to beef flavor. When I gave it to my dog she acted like I given her bitters, I call and talked to one of the owners, he checked and said it was made correct and when I said I was unhappy he told me he would remake and it would only cost me $45 the cost of a new prescription. Needless to say, My poor dog will be taking this awful medicine for a month I guess I'm suppose to believe or hope its right. I don't know many people have an extra $45 hanging around. In our house, pets are family too and they definitely make a house a home. So, when our veterinarian threw out a Hail, Mary pass to try to help our sweet diabetic octogenarian cat, that pass landed at the door of the Mark Drug and Healthy Alternatives store. For you fellow "animal parents", it's the same as with kids: no drive too long, no cost too high. I was pleased that our DVM had called ahead: when I entered Mark Drugs (which has the flavor and flare of what you could call an "apothecary") not only was I greeted kindly, but they made me feel like my worries were their top priority. Mark worked away at his mortar and pestle to prepare just what the doctor ordered: a customized, one of a kind, herbal relief so our little shrinking fur ball could keep food down. As I waited, I looked around and saw a man who had the same kind of haunted expression on his face that I had on mine. Apparently, his Boston terrier was in need of similar relief. I was really impressed with how this situation was handled by Mark Drugs; I'm sure they are just as great with the 2 legged variety too. They don't take all insurance and don't carry the kind of stock that a Walgreens or CVS does, but if you need a specialized prescription - you know the old fashioned kind where the pharmacist actually formulates it for you - this is the place to go. I recently needed their services for a one-of-a kind mix of medication and the staff was wonderful to me. I was in intense pain and they took the time to make sure that I knew how to use the medicine in the appropriate way in to get the fastest relief possible. They didn't just read the doc's instructions and leave me on my own to figure the rest out. It made my awful day much brighter. In my book, that's the way all pharmacists and their staff should be. read more

I called around but they were the only local place that could do B12 injections as prescribed by my doctor. However, there was a lot of confusion over the phone and debate about insurance, etc. When I got there, things weren't completely ready. They ended up charging me about $120 and giving me a slip to send to insurance for reimbursement. It's a strange place, but I liked that it seemed to be a family run environment. However, I wasn't going to continue B12 and told my doctor the expense. My doctor was appalled and sent my script to another pharmacy. With overnight refrigerated shipping from out of state, I paid $40. Without the shipping, it would have been $21, which by the way is the amount my insurance authorizes for B12. This new one feels more effective as well, making me wonder if I was scammed somehow. read more

I was in there to pick up my husband's compression socks after a surgery this week. The rude older woman with gray hair told me that she'd never heard of a doctor ordering stocking for his diagnosis. Not sure why it's her business to begin with. Next, she asked me what his measurements were and continued to complain that his doctor did not tell him that he should have measured his leg before I came with the prescription. She finally got me the stockings after I called and got the measurements. She took me to the register but then she refused to Bill our insurance because SHE did measure it herself!! Why wouldn't she tell me all of this beforehand?! Because she's nasty! That's why. I had to listen to her miserable personality and complaining for abolutely nothing!! I've been going to Mark Drugs for compounded medications for one of my dogs for several years now. The location is pretty good, since we live in the Northwest suburbs but the hours can be a challenge at times. I've been there at 9 when they are supposed to open and it wasn't open and gone in the evenings when they still should be open and they aren't but I guess that is what happens when you work with smaller family run businesses. The turnaround time for scripts varies - I've had some that took a week and others they were able to do in a day or so. It does depend on what they have to make and if they have the supplies in stock. We also have capsules filled for different powdered medication because my dog won't touch any food with the powder on it :) On the pricing side, Mark Drugs is really expensive. I try to only take scripts for things that we need immediately, and I send the others out of state to a different, well known compounding pharmacy that has much better pricing and turnaround times. Overall if you need a specialty drug, I'd suggest trying Mark Drugs first to see if they can make it, then see if it works. If you need the medication on a long term or maintenance basis - there are other options to fill those online that are just as reputable and much more cost effective. read more

I have been getting my prescriptions compounded here since 2012. The staff is friendly, professional, and helpful. Since they make the medication, you need to give them about 3 days notice to pick up a refill. However, there have been a number of times that I had forgotten to give them adequate time, and I was going to run out of my current supply. They have gone out of their way to help me by giving me a partial refill or by getting the full prescription expedited. I seldom post online reviews, but Mark Drugs was worth the effort. Their staff is friendly, and knowledgeable. If they do not know the answer to your questions, the owner and head pharmacist is a wealth of information about all kinds of standard pharmaceuticals, about custom formulations, and nutrition supplements. This is not your average "big box" impersonal pharmacy. They custom formulate medicines onsite if your doctor prescribes something unusual, or for an unusual dose or delivery system. I see a holistic medical doctor, and he suggested I might try Low Dose Naltrexone for one of a series of stubborn autoimmune problems I was experiencing. I went to Mark Drugs because I had heard that they were a top quality compounding pharmacy. The LDN really made a huge difference in my health, and I am very grateful. I am very leery of just mail ordering special medicines from some unknown internet pharmacy, so I drove about 30 miles to Mark Drugs, and I would not go anywhere else for special pharmacy needs. We have been going to Mark Drugs for a long time now and, lately, I needed assistance with resolving a controller issue on a lift chair. Rich came out with a loaner controller, got me back in business, ordered a new controller and then came back to install it. All was done in a short period of time. If your looking for compassionate help in getting durable medical supplies I do not recommend going to Mark Drugs. It seems like working with them is a nightmare. After working with them over the phone to get all the documents needed they continually told me that they had not received the faxes from my Doctor,s office. So today my husband and I drove to my Doctor's office to pick up the documents and went to Mark Drugs to hand deliver them. When the person came out to review the papers he said they were not correct and additional ones are needed. After a few questions he finally admitted that he had made an error in having given me the wrong information. He then walked away. So I picked up my papers and stated that they are obviously not interested in my business. On leaving I asked a young lady to speak with management I was told the person I was talking with was the manager. All I can add is if you are looking to get help with getting medical equipment please don't take your family members here. They act as if they don't need business, So they will not be getting mine. I recently started using Mark's Drugs recently when my Dr recommended that I go on a special diet. My doctor recommended that I try the HCG diet since everything I had tried on my own had failed; including working with a nutritionist. I have several medical issues that I was concerned about with this diet. Dr. Mark Mandal allayed my fears and answered all of my questions.
