He seemed to get irritated if you take too much of his time or ask too many questions. I had to ask for the antibiotics after the gum surgery, and he gave me the prescription as a photocopy, rather than the original receipt, which I have never seen any doctor's office do. Neither he nor his staff ever called to check back on me to see how I was doing, even though I have serious medical issues. I researched his records online, and found he has some criminal records, which I did not discover until after I had the bone graft. When I tried to call for a checkup after the 4 month healing period, their phones were blocking my calls. I tried to reach them for 2 weeks by asking someone to go by there and tell them I was trying to reach them, and they claimed they were having problems with their phones. What doctor's office leaves their phones out of service for 2 weeks, and does not answer calls from their patients? I won't be back there. I would carefully consider being careful to not put my care into any dentist who conducts his practice in such a cold, calculating manner as that. I do not recommend this doctor.

I need a gentle, no upselling dentist I can trust…read more Dr.King was my second dentist I tried when I moved to Tampa. The first could not deliver on either of my requirements. Dr.King is wonderful! I like her staff and that matters too. I trust Dr.King and if she recommends something, and she has not recommended much as I've had a ton of work done previously, I know she sees a need. It's also a beautiful and pristine office and that matters too.

I had Joan sign me up for a dental plan in 2019. She signed me up for automatic renewal without telling me and I was charged for 2020, 2021, and again in 2023 without my knowledge. In that period I went to the office and had work done without insurance paying anything. They quit accepting that plan after 2019. Then she sells me a new plan in 2022 and I soon discover I had been paying for the first one for three years without any benefit. I complained and they cancelled my insurance without reimbursing me for anything. I knew I would never get my premiums back for the first plan but they should reimburse me for the second. They have ripped me off of 150 dollars and when I disputed the charge they refused to settle the dispute. This was Joan's mistake, she never asked or told me she was signing me up for auto renewal. This is so wrong. Besides that, after spending over 10,000 for crown replacement my mouth has never been right. My mouth bothers me constantly now and 3d xrays don't show what is under the crowns but something is not right. I would advise you all to stay away from this office, you may learn to regret it as I have.

This was my second experience with Dr Mellman. The first…read moreexperience was a mere 11 years ago! A Little Background. I've had very little trouble with my teeth, thanks to my genes and my oral hygiene. My regular dentist? All he gets to do to me is a prophylactic treatment twice a year. That translates into a little housekeeping and cleaning of my choppers. I've always felt fortunate. That I've never had a cavity. I guess I'd say I'm enamored with my enamel, thanks to my kith and kin. (What'd he say?) The First Visit. I had a pocket area in a part of my gums that wasn't any huge concern, but I wanted it gone, so my dentist instantly referred me to Dr Mellman. From the beginning, I felt very comfortable with the doctor and his staff. I was seeing a man who was precisely dedicated to 'doing things right' and was extremely learned. Dr Mellman has excellent 'chairside manner', too. A real plus! The Second Visit. Fast forward those 11 years, and I find myself with a similar pocket in a gum. Much different than gum in your pocket.. Or, is it? LOL Without batting an eye, I knew who I was gonna call. Ain't gonna be Ghostbusters. After all those years. It was like I was walking back in time. The staff remembered me, which is really awesome OR what'd I do this time? LOL It was business as usual once I sat in that chair, peppered with an enormous amount of good will, laughs and admiration. In a nutshell. Everything went smoother than smooth! I can attest to having had a micro-mini negligible nanosecond of discomfort. The procedure was quite tedious for the doc and his able assistant. But they never missed a beat and I'm so glad! 6 Weeks Later. I'm good to go! I've got a squeaky-clean dental machine!

New patient here and I have so many good things to say I could cry!…read more I admit, My dental history isn't the greatest and I now have a bunch of old dental work that is failing me years later. Dental procedures have always been on the back burner for me unless completely necessary. Today's initial overview of my dental health contained everything under the sun: Cavities, swollen gums, fillings that were cracked, bite issues, questionable bridge work...you get it. Basically a 4/10. I got X-rays and tons of "before" photos/scans with cool high tech equipment, Hygienist came in and did her thing as well. After the doctor reviewed everything, she gave me my options of highest priorities to take care of and what they could get done while I was there. Today I got a deep cleaning on my right side and afterwards got a TON of mini fires put out on my right upper teeth. It was a marathon appointment. They worked quick and although I was there for a few hours, they really fixed so many years of neglect. I couldn't be more grateful to them. I've already called friends and told them they need to switch to this dental office. I have never experienced better customer care in my life. The sweetest staff you can find and that is especially important when you have 'dental insecurities'. I have a few more appointments to go to get to that healthy smile, but I am so excited I found these guys and just trusted the good reviews. I thought all day about writing this for them because they truly deserve every good praise in my opinion. Side notes: The building is beautiful! Make sure you follow their parking instructions so you can get validated parking. They bought me a smoothie because they knew I'd be hungry being there for that long. They have the best rating for a reason!

BEWARE OF OVERCHARGING!…read more I strongly recommend that any patient here carefully compare every charge to their insurance EOB. Do not assume the billing is accurate without verifying it yourself! After personally reconciling the office's patient ledger to my insurance Explanation of Benefits, I found over $5k in billing discrepancies. Line by line, I found charges that exceeded the insurance-allowed amounts. For example, one visit was billed at $467, while the allowed amount was $251. These differences were not minor--they added up to a substantial overpayment! What's troubling is that these discrepancies were not identified or corrected by the office. I had to do the reconciliation myself and bring it to their attention. After submitting detailed documentation, including a very detailed and thorough spreadsheet, persistent follow ups and ultimately escalated to take legal action until I finally received a partial refund, well beyond the expected timeframe. Even now, the amount is not fully resolved, and $252 remains in dispute. When billing discrepancies of this size only come to light after a patient conducts their own detailed audit--and then require weeks of pressure to partially correct--it raises serious questions about billing accuracy and internal oversight. Also want to note that they require full payment for procedures up front and don't take in account estimated insurance proceeds. As a result, I ended up over paying by more than $10k! What makes this whole situation worse is that I used to really like this office, had a lot of trust and respect for them but the way I've been treated ever since I started questioning the charges has done a complete 180. They consistently made me feel like a burden and the "bad guy". They did not take accountability at all for the issue and continue to argue with me with no substantial back up. Regarding the actual dental work I received - when I went in to switch out my temporary crowns to the permanent ones (I got crowns on almost all my top teeth), I really didn't like them and weren't like the temporary ones I was wearing for a few weeks. I was almost in tears trying to advocate for myself before they permanently cemented them. They made me feel bad for sending them back, I'm so glad I got the courage to speak up and not accept something I did not like. Ultimately after the second visit, they ended up looking really good but after everything I've dealt with recently, I certainly won't be returning. Who knows how much they overcharged me since 2019 when I first started coming here! If you chose to go to this office, please make sure to pay close attention to your patient charges and the amount they submit to your dental insurance (they should match)! If they owe you a refund, Florida recently based a law that makes it unlawful for healthcare providers to hold onto amounts owed to patients for overpayments over 30 days.

Never a dull moment. My Green-eyed Foodie won't be able to eat solids and cleverly comment about…read moreany food (other than my cream of Platanos, Butternut Squash soup or my Publix-bought vanilla pudding.) I have always thought she was smart beyond her years. Until today. Four impacted wisdom teeth removed, I have a drooling, cotton chewing, laughing-gas incoherent, babbling young lady. Even in the midst of her newly acquired high, she argued that the upper wisdom teeth came out easily because of gravity. Newton is definitely giving her one of those slow three claps Kathy Griffin is famous for (and I enjoy giving to careless drivers too.) Please, don't steal the doctorate thesis she is to make out of this. It will be published in the annals of modern medicine. Thank God, both visits to Periodontal & Implant Esthetics were beyond excellent. What a beautiful clinic! I feel like, once in a while, I ought to show up and sit in the waiting room. They have a huge array of new magazines, a mini fridge filled with beverages, fresh coffee, protein bars... a huge plasma TV. The problem is that one never gets to wait enough to read anything. You arrive. You are warmly greeted. You sit. You pick one magazine and open it... and you are called in! This time since the procedure was to last around two hours, I announced that I was consciously stealing magazines to take with me to the Starbucks next door. As expected, a huge smile and a "but of course!" Had I stayed there, I would have raided that fridge and binge like the fraternity guy I never dated. The individual cubicles are top of the line. Mega modern. Minimalist decorations. They face a small lush garden. Zen. Doctor Gustavo Ruiz de Castilla treated us kindly and explained the procedures that were to take place. He was incredibly kind about the Green-eyed Foodie anxiety. Prescriptions were sent through the mail. I was called many times to discuss coverage and fees which I loved. Even a little while ago, the doctor called to check up on her. Once again, he explained what is to be expected and reassured me that he was a phone call away. Will she ever recover her wisdom? As I look her, sleeping, cotton rolls peeking out her mouth... an ice pack on each cheek... I sip on my wine. Forget the wisdom (it is overrated), please God, don't let her wake up a walrus with chipmunk cheeks. Would that make her a Manatee?

This review is based on the experiences of two people (my wife and I) over the course of a decade…read morefor me and about 5 years for her (I mistakenly convinced her to switch from her prior periodontist). Now, two years after our last visits to the office of Ruiz (who I refuse to call a "Dr."), we've both finally gotten resolved all of our dental issues that went mostly un-diagnosed, untreated, and worsened while under Ruiz's "care" (for lack of better term). Over the course of those two years, between my wife and I, we've now dealt with a half dozen offices of various types of dental specialists (all referred to by the real periodontist we now use). The conclusions we've now drawn about the years and money we wasted at Ruiz's office are based on: [1] comparisons to our experiences at those half dozen other offices [2] comparisons of our overall oral health following the care of a real periodontist, versus Ruiz (despite the fact that we're a decade older). First, I'll offer the good news. The hygienist at Ruiz's office, Suzanne, was by far the best hygienist out of the half dozen or so we have encountered over the years. She is not only better than any other hygienist we've been to at the technical aspects of the job, but she also genuinely cares about patients. My wife and I also agree that the same was clearly true of all other staff at this office. In fact, so much so that we actually wish we could switch all of the average staff at the various dental offices we use now with all the above-average staff from this office ... except the individual who masquerades as a doctor. In fact, the hygienist and office staff are the only reasons this review doesn't start with negative 5 stars. Now, I'll recount a small portion of the bad news for those making the mistake of getting "treatment" from Ruiz. Because I mistakenly convinced myself that we were being too critical, my wife and I initially dismissed several issues over the years (i.e. increasingly shaky hands by someone holding sharp objects in your mouth isn't exactly comforting). However, we eventually agreed that we should seek periodontal care elsewhere. In the process of finding our current periodontist, we both saw two other periodontists and the reactions of both were identical ... visible shock and disbelief that either of us had been under the care of any periodontist at all in the years we had been going to Ruiz. I won't recount details of our personal health information here, but we were both informed of multiple severe periodontal issues that Ruiz never even diagnosed, let alone treated. That is despite the fact that we both diligently followed every direction and recommendation made by Ruiz, who was consistently so dismissive of our issues that we both concluded we must be overreacting to the things we're experiencing since he obviously must know more about dentistry than us. In fact, Ruiz's go-to "treatment" was to load us up with high-octane antibiotics and convince us that the things we were experiencing were "normal." By the way, that's after $10k "laser surgery" we later found out from real periodontists basically amounts to an expensive cleaning that's supposed to be accompanied by restorative treatments (not to replace those treatments ... unless, of course, the goal is to bill the highest amount, not treat the patient). I could go on for pages about the many ways in which the care from Ruiz is the worst we ever experienced from any so-called medical professional, but it makes me angry to even think about it, which is part of why I didn't write a review until now. The bottom line is that the diagnoses and treatment recommendations from Ruiz were nowhere near standard of care, and we've now spent years and many tens of thousands of dollars each to repair all the damage caused by years of sub-par care. You have been warned, so put your health in his shaky hands at your own risk.
