The Rocky Mountain Lodge was one of the first lodging options that popped up in my internet search, and, being on a tight budget, we mainly picked it because of the excellent price! Little did we know what a treat we were in for. The evening we arrived in Cascade, a long, winding, dark road led us up to this inviting lodge, bedazzled with magical Christmas lights and warmly-lit lanterns. In the office next door we found the innkeepers, Debbie and Brian, who happily greeted us and showed us around. The Lodge itself is amazing -- a wonderful and cozy building in excellent condition, with lovely rustic decor everywhere you turn. Already impressed with the place, we were pleasantly surprised to find there was a hot tub running outside (which we took advantage of, despite the cold November temperatures!) Our room was wonderful as well -- every last detail was attended to. Such a great place for a relaxing mountain getaway. I thought I was done with this review, but I nearly forgot about our complimentary breakfast. TO. DIE. FOR. Being the only two guests dining that morning, Debbie personally served the two of us an incredible three-course breakfast, with such accoutrements as homemade Devonshire cream, lemon curd, and peach preserves, made with locally-grown fruit. Delicious! It's awfully hard to have a bad day after dining on great food in such a serene setting, with such pleasant hosts. Thank you Brian and Debbie! We got the Independent suite and we're pleased to see it was much bigger than the main house rooms. It has 2 rooms, one of which has a king bed and fireplace. The other is a sitting room which also has the oval tub, shower, and sink. The commode is house in a room of its own. They offer En Suite breakfast, which we enjoy, as well as a wine social from 5 to 7. If you're looking for Victorian charm and a romantic getaway, this is the place. Just know, it is surrounded by private homes, so no breath taking views are included.

My wife always wanted to stay in a caboose and since her birthday was coming up, I booked us in for a weekend. And I pretty much won the weekend. The inside is beautifully decorated and painted. You have TV and DVD (there are some movies to chose from), wireless, coffee and tea along with creamer and sweeteners, eating utensils, a dorm fridge/freezer--basically everything a hotel would give you, only a little more and of nicer quality. We had our own private hot tub off the back of the caboose Lynda, the owner, was fabulous, and helped us out with dining suggestions, even keeping us apprised of weather and potential flash flooding warnings. We followed her recommendations and weren't disappointed. I highly recommend the breakfast as well. We were greeted at our door in the morning to mimosas, then bacon and eggs, and a delicious type of fresh fruit tart/pancake. I'm already dreaming up reasons to come back in the winter as I'm certain it'll be even more cosy.

They also gave us tips and advice on the best places to visit while we were there. The rooms are very clean and the beds are decently comfy. Our room had a mini fridge and microwave for convenience. In the morning they offer complementary coffee served in the office, that is very tasty (not bad at all for being free). The Mecca is located right by The Garden of the Gods (seriously right behind it off highway 24) and on a strip of local restaurants and fast foods. It's about a 7 minute drive to Manitou Springs where the shops and Cog rail to pikes peak is. This is the second time I have stayed here and it's just as wonderful as the first with just the right price. I will be staying here when I come back to Colorado Springs.

It's even a few steps above glamping as it should be for the steep price. However, if you want to experience a few days in a great outdoors The Ranch at Emerald Valley is perfect. After 4 nights at the Broadmoor resort (also amazing) we took the 2pm shuttle up a rocky mountain road to the Ranch. We were greeted by Aaron, a fellow Northwestern alum (go Wildcats) and his incredible staff. There were 38 people total our first night there, which the told us was a record for the Ranch. It didn't feel very crowded though (especially after the craziness of the resort) and most of the people had kids the same age as ours which was a lot of fun. They showed us to our cabin, Hills Cabin, which I realized was the "presidential cabin." It was a huge 2 bedroom cabin that had enough room for 6 kids up in loft up top and a beautiful master suite. + 3 bathrooms and a ginormous kitchen/dining room that we didn't really put to use. It also have a big TV with Netflix and a lovely fireplace. There's a 3rd bedroom that's attached to it, although the 2nd night we were there it was rented by another couple with a separate entrance. There's plenty of fun to be had at the ranch: horseback riding, paddleboats/kayaks, archery, fishing, hiking etc. And if you get a rainy afternoon there are plenty of board games to play both in the lodge and in the cabin. We spent 2 nights here, although with the rain wish we had an extra night to enjoy some of the activities we didn't have a chance to squeeze in. The food was absolutely amazing. My picky children were even in heaven and my little guy has been asking for lobster ever since trying it as their Wed night cookout. Dinners besides the twice a week cookout involves ordering off a menu with plenty of choices for all. I do wish they did a better job with labeling the buffet with food allergies. My son has a serious nut allergy and almost ate a brownie with walnuts because it wasn't labeled and I had to constantly ask if things had nuts and/or gluten in them. They asked for our dietary restrictions ahead of time so assumed they'd be better about this. This really was a very special experience that I think our kids will remember for a long time. I heard this coming week a big family is renting out the entire ranch and I'd love to do the same with family and/or friends at some point, although it was fun getting to know some lovely people from around the country as well.
