So good, we came back for dinner. Then we had the salmon with potatoes and sides and Bangers & Mash. Fish was fresh and good sized. The glass of red we stopped for wasn't the best but it was a good place to escape the icy winds for half an hour. They also do a good selection of tapas although I didn't partake on this occasion. I probably won't be rushing back to Margate in a hurry but if I do find myself here again, the Lighthouse Bar will definitely be worth a second visit.

My wife and I started off on a pub crawl to celebrate our arrival in a sunny beachside Broadstairs, where Dicken's Bleak House is located. The rest of England was under the clouds and rain of a cold midsummer storm... Broadstairs has a lot of bars, pubs and restaurants. The Dolphin seems to have its share of the local business, so we gave it a try. The barmaid was pretty busy, so I chatted with a couple of the locals while I waited. They were pretty interested in what part of the States I came from, and regaled me with a few homes and memories (one was old enough to remember the Tanks he met during the war!). I was asking them if any of the beers taps were for a local brew. They didn't think so, but the barmaid pointed to a hand marked tap and said it was very local. Had a pint of "#7" and enjoyed it. Too bad the Brits aren't into ice cold beer, but it was tasty even just cool.

My response usually ranged from indifference to active dislike. So, when my friends in England suggested fish and chips at Shakey Shakey, my expectations were rather low. Boy, was I ever pleasantly surprised. Every order here is accompanied by a simple lettuce and parsley salad (nice), tomato and cucumber salad (tasty), and cooked onions in a balsamic and oil sauce with spices (frickin' amazing). We also had some sides that included a mildly spicy sausage, pickled onion, mushy peas, and gherkin. All were good. The chips (fries) were tasty, and there were an abundance of them, but I wish I had asked for them to be cooked extra crispy. I had a bite of my friend's haddock. It had good flavor and very good texture. My cod, however, was a blank canvas upon which the very essence of "fish-n-chips" was painted in masterful strokes. It was cooked perfectly, with flaky flesh and crispy batter. The favors were mild, yet thoroughly enjoyable. It was served searingly hot from the fryer, and was as close to perfect as this non-fish aficionado could possibly want. I had expected to tolerate this dish, instead it was the best of its kind I have ever enjoyed. The owner and family were wonderfully friendly. The service was excellent. All this, and pricing that was more than reasonable.
