This park has a couple different names. I have driven past so many times- and it took me being out…read morewith a fellow Yelper to turn around and go back. Problem is- signage isn't very clear on how to get to the parking lot for the park! The directional sign on the road says "Sculpture Park" with a right arrow- and if you make the next turn you are sitting in front of the police station. Which is where we parked and walked down the sidewalk on A1A to get to the park. Turns out- there is a back exit to the parking lot at the police station that goes down a road and dead ends into the parking lot for the park. Who knew?- not this woman! Oh well- the Lakeside Park/Veteran's Memorial/Sculpture Garden park has a large round memorial to all of the service branches- very pleasing to the eye. In the center is the American Flag and the POW flag below it. There is a board walk along the lake- which provides a wonderful view of turtles! I'm sure you could see some birds too- depending on the time of day. The path winds South and is adorned with a variety of sculptures- hence "Sculpture Garden". I think my favorite was the one that looked like a Phoenix- although there were several that caught my eye. Plenty of shade, benches and art! Oh Well- the big sign at the Southwest corner of the park said Lakeside Park, Veteran's Memorial Park.

Coming here was kinda confusing as I had to look to the walkway to find my way to the shore line so walking down the path was fun and interesting all to its own and with the beach at the end I was all for it! The beach is long and has a way for cars to drive down the middle of it seeing this was kinda a trip to me as I'm not used to cars driving on the beach as you just don't see that in many places outside or Mexico. This spot was definitely a locals spot as I can tell I didn't fit in here which is one of the main reasons I went here as those are generally the best beaches. The beach was right and the time I spent here was awesome I really couldn't have asked for more. Overall super cool spot that has a handful of parking spots right next to the trail and just a ton of beach for you to enjoy. With that said who knows when or if I'll get back here again but let's just say I'll always have another beach day somewhere.

We found our way into the end of the boardwalk & happily shared the boardwalk with pedestrians, families & little kids with scooters! It left us off NEAR the beach-there is some walking still to get to the other side of the beach road in soft sand. Had a nice conversation with a whale watcher stationed at the end of the walkway. The hubs & I first purchased our 4x4 vehicle permit at Vilano Beach, expecting miles & miles of sand to tear up.. we were met with less than a mile stretch of beach which was popular for fishing but not for off-roading or sun bathing. The attendant was nice enough to recommend we head to Anastasia Island which was a God send. The permit which cost $10 was good at any St. John's county beach access for the day. We stumbled upon Crescent Beach (on A Island) & conveniently found Barney's Beach Service 904-461-1422 and rented out an umbrella and 2 chairs ($50 from 10-4pm) The weather was perfect: a couple clouds spread across the sky, a cool 77 degree water temperature made it all the more easier to bask in the sun. And the sand was off white & powdery to the touch. I couldn't help but notice how peaceful the atmosphere was here. This trip ended up being just what the doctor ordered.

Loved seeing the sunrise and the beach view was so pretty. At the time, they were doing construction by the pier, so I walked under it to see the sunrise r with no obstructions. There was street parking with no parking fees here. One half of this beach is dog friendly and the other is not so make sure to check that out online. We didn't stay on the beach just visited and walked since it was chilly.

Riverfront Park in Palatka runs along the St. Johns River just south of Memorial Bridge, a wide and…read moreopen stretch of waterfront with a smooth walking path, fishing and boat piers, a kayak launch, and the city's tall Millennium Clock Tower standing close to the water. The tower gives the park a clear focal point, its height and simple lines rising above the river and the lawns around it. From the walkway you get a strong, unobstructed view of Memorial Bridge, its long concrete sweep carrying traffic across one of the broadest points of the St. Johns. On a sunny day it is an easy and pleasant walk, the kind where you slow down without meaning to. In December, though, the river goes quiet, and you will not see much boat traffic at all. Restful benches are placed throughout the green & treed banks. There is a free boat launch, marina, playground, amphitheatre and fishing pier. There is a walking/biking path that stretches from one side of the park to the end. Large free parking lots west of the park.

There's a playground on the other side and it is fenced in! There are tennis courts and on some mornings you can see pickle ballers taking over the courts! This park is wheelchair accessible, I believe there are two paved handicap parking spots! There's a covered pavilion, bathrooms, and no stairs! Popular fishing spot, great sunset spot, great place to see the stars! You can ride bikes here! Closes at 11 pm!

The remote entrance off Route 17 is narrow and the change of elevation is more than a little…read morenoticeable especially for this part of Florida, I grab a lower gear and crawl up the incline towards the gate - the rules are posted, some display the park's hours, another reminds you to be "bear aware" and a drop box is available to pay the entrance fee on your honor, I throw my annual pass on the dash but it's doubtful that I'll need it as the rain continues to drizzle across the pavement that winds through the charred pines from the previous control burn. Most of the side trails are blocked by iron gates or logs and disappear from sight after only a few yards. The air is heavy with humidity as the sun peeks in and out of the clouds, the condensate drips from my water bottle tucked in the cup holder and a dragon fly kisses my side window as I navigate at an idle towards the water edge. The only sounds audible as I creep through this forrest are the winding sounds of the super charger and the exhaust from my Jeep "Ole Red". The rumble ends with the turn of the key at the river's edge the silence is only broken by the tidal flow of the St. John's River as it challenges the narrow channel of Dunn Creek. The drizzling rain continues soaking the leafs and underbrush while cleansing the air and awakens the forrest - a gray squirrel scurry's across the foliage jumping on the nearest tree trunk as he scans his territory for intruders. There's a small pier and floating dock to moor your skiff or wet a line, a small branch in the shallows snagged some kids red and white bobber and displays it like a trophy while some fish celebrates. Just when I thought I was the only winner on this fine day I'm humble by nature once again, I guess if a tree falls in the woods it does make a noise even if no arrogant human hears it - this is the kind of place where I find my reset button, I really need to do this more often...
